RuPaul’s Drag Race is more than just your typical reality TV competition series; it has evolved into a cultural phenomenon. The show has crowned numerous superstar drag queens who have stomped through the Werk Room, with over 100 queens competing for the highest honor in the world of drag.
Hosted by RuPaul Charles, it celebrates the artistic prowess of drag queens from diverse backgrounds and offers a glimpse into the lives of contestants who courageously share their tales of resilience in the face of discrimination and prejudice.
Since its debut in 2009, the show has consistently delivered iconic television moments, with episodes challenging contestants to showcase their ‘charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent.’ Even if one doesn’t snatch the crown as the season’s winner, there’s still the opportunity to secure a coveted place in the ‘Drag Race Hall of Fame’ through RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars.

As Hollywood begins to recover from the dual labor actions, here again is Deadline’s annual list of premiere dates for new and returning TV series.
The roster covers hundreds broadcast, cable and streaming programs debuting through 2023. “RuPaul’s Drag Race” has reached her sweet 16.
The Emmy-winning reality competition series — which returns to MTV for its 16th season on Jan. 5 — revealed the 14 new drag queens competing for the $200,000 grand prize and the title of America’s next drag superstar on Wednesday.
The two-part series premiere will feature the queens showing off their stuff in the annual talent show, which has become a mainstay on the series. This year, however, the show — which will be themed separately for MTV’s Spring Break and the “Queen Choice Awards” — will feature a new twist in the competition: “Rate-a-Queen.” After the performances have ended, the contestants must rank their fellow queens’ performances to determine the tops and bottoms of the week.
The aftershow “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked” is also returning, airing immediately following the series.

This story about “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
There’s a lot crammed into each 30-minute episode of “Untucked.” The companion show to “RuPaul’s Drag Race” captures the moments after the contestants learn whether they are safe from elimination or will lip sync for their life (and for the chance to stay another week in the drag queen competition). But “Untucked” also serves as a group therapy session, a place where they can “turn off” their drag and competitive personas and just be themselves, a rare respite in a competition where they must be constantly “on.”
“It is the moment where the queens are no longer their characters,” “Untucked” executive producer Kenneth Leslie said. “They’re with their sisters celebrating, crying, laughing. They’re going through every emotion as a human being, not as a character.

Although the Best Structured Reality Program Emmy has only gone to two series (“Shark Tank” and “Queer Eye”) since being introduced in 2014, the corresponding unstructured award has been won by six different shows in the same stretch of time. “Love on the Spectrum” took the 2022 prize but is out of the running this time, leaving 2021 winner “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked” as the only show with a shot at pulling off the category’s first repeat victory in four years.
“Untucked” is one of three returning contenders in the current Best Unstructured Reality Program lineup, along with “Indian Matchmaking” and “Selling Sunset.” Both were bested by RuPaul’s series in 2021, while the latter also lost alongside it in 2022. Rounding out this bunch are “Vanderpump Rules,” which has finally broken through with Emmy voters after 10 seasons, and new show “Welcome to Wrexham,” which, according to Gold Derby’s odds, is heavily favored to win.

It's unclear whether the 2023 Emmy Awards will go forward as planned on Sept. 18 with the Writers Guild of America on strike and a Screen Actors Guild strike looming, but they're moving ahead as far as nominations go.
On July 12, the Television Academy announced this year's Emmy nominations, and standout nominees include "Succession" in its final season, with stars tapped in every drama acting category, and popular series like "The White Lotus," "Ted Lasso," and "Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story." You know that it’s their time: “Vanderpump Rules” has officially been nominated for its first Emmy award.
After a shell-shocking 10th season that drew in record-breaking ratings for the series and Bravo at large, the Lisa Vanderpump-led series has been named one of the five nominees for unstructured reality. It’s competing against “Deadliest Catch,” “Life Below Zero,” “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked,” and “Welcome To Wrexham.”
When news broke during the airing of the show’s 10th season that castmates Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix had split amid Sandoval’s ongoing affair with fellow co-star Raquel Leviss, cameras quickly began rolling to capture the fallout. The quarrel shifted the friendships of the Los Angeles-based “Vanderpump Rules” cast so much that Leviss took out a restraining order on her former best friend and co-star Scheana Shay for an alleged punching that took place when the affair was revealed.

Bravo’s “Vanderpump Rules,” Hulu’s “The Kardashians” and TLC’s “90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way” are among the 45 reality programs hoping to nab their first Emmy nominations. This is down from the previous three years, which had 65, 48 and 44 submissions, respectively.

Gold Derby caught up with Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato backstage at the 2023 edition of RuPaul’s DragCon LA, a two-day extravaganza taking place at the Los Angeles Convention Center. In addition to winning five Emmy Awards for “RuPaul’s Drag Race” (2018-21) and “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked” (2021), they’ve also been producers of DragCon for World of Wonder since the very beginning. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“It started in 2015 so we’re in year eight, but we had a pandemic and things like that,” Bailey tells us. “But we’ve done DragCon in New York and the UK, so we’re fully in our eighth year, but in the 12th DragCon.”
What’s special about this year’s DragCon? Barbato declares, “This year we have over 150 ‘Drag Race’ queens from all over the world, so it’s like the United Nations of drag. There are so many queens.

Season 15 of RuPaul’s Drag Race featured the largest cast of queens in the show’s history, as 16 queens came together to compete for the title of America’s Next Drag Superstar and a massive grand prize of 200,000. But despite it being a larger-than-life season, much of Season 15‘s first half contained episodes that were compressed into one hour (with commercials), as opposed to the 90-minute episodes that have been the standard since Season 10. Now, after an outcry from fans, 90-minute Drag Race episodes are back.

The first night of the 2022 Creative Arts Emmy Awards is taking place on Saturday, Sept. 3, and we’ll see where the Primetime ceremony could be heading based on the first wave of winners.
With an evening that features categories for animated program, reality host, documentaries and short form, we could get a strong sense of where some of the support lies for the main ceremony on Monday, Sept. 12.
There are significant history-making moments that can take place.
Barack Obama could become the second U.S. president to win an Emmy for outstanding narrator for Netflix’s “Our Great National Parks.” Dwight Eisenhower won in 1956, while still in office when he picked up the Governors Award “for his use and encouragement of television.”
If Obama wins, he’ll be halfway to Egot status after netting two Grammys for best spoken word album for “Dreams from My Father” (2006) and “The Audacity of...

It came as no surprise that “RuPaul’s Drag Race” emerged from the 2022 Primetime Emmy nominations as the year’s most nominated reality show. It has eight bids overall, including Best Competition Program. If it keeps winning the top prizes, which it has been doing for years now, then RuPaul Charles will extend the record he set last year as the most awarded Black individual in Emmy history. Do you think voters will add to the RuPaul Emmys record?

RuPaul Emmy record set! It was no surprise when “RuPaul’s Drag Race” won the Emmy for Best Competition Program on Sunday night, September 19. But it was a landmark moment as this was the 11th total victory for executive producer RuPaul Charles, now making him the single most awarded Black individual in history. Check out the complete list of Emmy winners here.
“Drag Race” won four awards at the Creative Arts Emmys presented last weekend on September 11 and 12. That included the sixth consecutive victory for Charles as Best Reality Host. The series additionally won for its casting, directing, and picture editing, while the spinoff “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked” won its first prize for Best Unstructured Reality Program; since Charles is an executive producer of that series as well, he took home a trophy there too. Though it might come as a surprise to the casual television viewer, this weekend saw the bulk of the 2021 Emmy Awards distributed, as the Television Academy orchestrated three separate Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremonies, each dedicated to honoring artistic and technical achievements across several genres, including animation, reality, and documentary categories.
While it’s easy to dismiss the Creative Arts Awards as a mere litmus test for the Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony to come, it would be wrong to overlook what they say about themselves, first and foremost.
And above all else, this year’s batch of winners were a testament to how much academy voters love consistency and comfort. For instance, NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” never fails to impress voters; the series consistently picks up a handful of Emmys each year. At the 2021 Creative Arts Emmys, the series took home seven trophies, already outpacing its total from last...
