This year’s Cannes competition began with a film set in a working-class environment where a young woman with a single mother dreamed of escaping it all through dance. It was Agathe Riedinger’s Wild Diamond, but squint the eyes and forget the sunny coastal scenery and you could have been watching Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank, a winner of the jury prize here fifteen years ago. Arnold now returns to the Croisette with Bird, remarkably just her third narrative film since and her closest to it, in many ways––up-and-coming stars next to non-professional actors, kitchen-sink realism, great music, sketchy dudes––although this time with Franz Rogowski playing a queer-coded Mary Poppins who might be a seagull.
Bird stars Nykiya Adams as Bailey, a young girl living with her father, Bug (a tattooed Barry Keoghan in a touching performance), in a free-spirited community house in a British coastal town.

After prancing through the hallways showing his man-ness at the end of Saltburn last year, Barry Keoghan is back with a another illustrious ditty performance in Bird. In the Andrea Arnold movie that had its world premiere Thursday night at the Cannes Film Festival, Keoghan plays a young father, and at one moment he croons an off-key version of Blur’s “The Universal” in what is a sweet moment with dance involved.
For the actor, music is part of the full commitment to the roles he plays.
“I don’t think I can dance. I’m a bad dancer,” the Oscar-nominated actor confessed during a post-premiere press conference in Cannes on Friday. “I think the beauty of dancing on screen is the effort to try.”

Ian Sweet’s Jilian Medford has dropped a cover of the Broken Social Scene classic “Anthems For a Seventeen Year-Old Girl.”
Medford’s vocals are a perfect fit for the 2002 track, as she quietly conveys the pain and desperation of lines like “Park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me.”
“Broken Social Scene’s music has always felt like the equivalent of a hug, and I think at some point everyone has to have *that* moment with ‘Anthems For a Seventeen Year-Old Girl,'” Medford said in a statement.

Belgian rapper and filmmaker Baloji and French film actress Emmanuelle Béart have been announced as co-presidents of the Cannes Film Festival’s Caméra d’Or jury for the upcoming 77th edition, running from May 14 to 25.
The award for the best first film is open to all the debut feature films presented in Official Selection and the parallel sections of Directors’ Fortnight and Critics’ Week.
The Caméra d’Or Jury has been co-chaired three times before: by actress Françoise Fabian and director Daniel Schmid in 1996, by Marthe Keller and Géraldine Chaplin in 2002, and by brothers Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne in 2006.
Announcing the pair today, the festival described Baloji and Béart as “free spirits with no limits, who rely on their art to achieve creative freedom.” Baloji is best known for his directorial debut Omen, which debuted at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it picked up the New Voice Prize in Un Certain Regard.

After Blue (Bertrand Mandico)
In the post-apocalyptic nightmare of After Blue, humanity—or what’s left of it—roams a former paradise turned wasteland. The Armageddon that wrecked the Earth in some undetermined past left no machines behind, no screens, and, perhaps most conspicuously, no men. In the distant planet the human race fled to, and which writer-director Bertrand Mandico’s film is named after, “they were the first to die,” we’re warned early on: “their hairs grew inside them, and killed them.” As it was for its predecessor, The Wild Boys, After Blue is suffused in a feverish ecstasy, that wild excitement that comes from a watching one world crumble and another jutting into being from scratch, a vision of...

U.K. post-punks Idles enlisted Chris Martin — both the real one from now and the one from 24 years ago — to help them put together the video for their new song, “Grace.”
The clip is basically the same one Coldplay released all the way back in 2000 for their hit song, “Yellow,” with Martin walking along a dreary, empty beach in the rain. Only in the “Grace” clip is he mouthing along to the Idles song, a feat accomplished with a bit of AI deepfake technology.

Idles have shared a new music video for their song “Grace,” and it sure looks a lot like Coldplay’s famously melancholy video for “Yellow.”
In fact, it’s almost the exact same video — only in the “Grace” visual, Coldplay’s Chris Martin is singing the words to the Idles song instead. The video was created with deepfake AI technology to give the impression of a 23 year-old Martin mouthing the words to “Grace” in the same way he did in the “Yellow” video.
Idles frontman Joe Talbot claims that the idea for the video occurred to him in a dream, and shortly after having it, he brought the idea to Chris Martin himself. Martin not only approved, but later helped train the AI to make his lip-syncing look more realistic. To make things even more dreamlike, however, the video’s director Jonathan Irwin occasionally blurs Martin’s movement, offsetting the already uncanny presentation.

British rock band Coldplay could be set for another track with Swedish House Mafia. The house supergroup remixed the Grammy-winning band’s 2011 track ‘Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall’.
The track samples the 70s’ hit ‘I Go to Rio’ and reached the Top 10 in the UK – and they’ve already spoken to frontman Chris Martin about working on something else together, reports ‘Female First UK’.
DJ Steve Angello, who is joined by Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso in the Swedish House Mafia, told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column, “We’ve spoken to Chris Martin about it. It would be cool to do something, so hopefully we can get it in the studio. That would be sick, because his vocals and the writing style would work really well with how we sound.”
Meanwhile, Nile Rodgers previously revealed he had been working on a top-secret project with Coldplay.

Nancy Green-Keyes, a casting director who worked on the first two Rush Hour films and on six films directed by Nick Cassavetes, including John Q, The Notebook and My Sister’s Keeper, has died. She was 68.
Green-Keyes died Wednesday of respiratory failure at UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center, her brother Andrew told The Hollywood Reporter.
A former agent, Green-Keyes launched Barry/Green-Keyes Casting with a former client, actor Matthew Barry, and they got their start on Rush Hour (1998), directed by Brett Ratner. They would share Artois Awards from the Casting Society of America in 2002 for The Family Man and in 2005 for The Notebook.
They also cast the Cassavetes films Alpha Dog (2006) — on which they received producer credit, too — Yellow (2012) and The Other Woman (2014).

It’s finally happened – another legend has achieved Egot status, with Elton John being only the 19th person to attain the much-desired acronym at this evening’s Emmy Awards. Now, I know what some of you are asking yourselves right now – what does Egot mean? It’s the acronym from the toppermost of the poppermost in the entertainment industry, meaning the person who attains Egot status has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award. It was infamously coined by Miami Vice star Phillip Michael Thomas, who, as Emmy Host Anthony Anderson pointed out in his introduction this evening, never won any of the four awards (the closest he got was a Golden Globe nomination). The acronym became more widespread after getting name-checked on 30 Rock. Sadly, John was recovering from a knee operation, so he wasn’t there to accept the award in person.

This True Detective article contains spoilers for Night Country.
True Detective: Night Country hasn’t been shy about drawing connections to season 1 of the hit crime series, down to the very clear supernatural bent of the new case, which sees Detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) investigating mysterious disappearances in rural Alaska during the region’s long polar night. Trailers for season 4 have even teased a familiar swirling symbol, the same one that a pair of odd couple Louisiana detectives followed all the way to Carcosa and the Yellow King back in 2014. In fact, with the premiere of Night Country, it really feels like we’re back in the “good ol’ days” with Rust and Marty.

Oscar contender Yellow
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed the lists of short films advancing to the next stage of Oscar contention. This is the final stage before the nominations themselves are announced on 23 January.
"It is a huge privilege to be shortlisted for the 96th Academy Awards," said Elham Ehsas, director of Yellow. "I hope this is one step closer to giving a voice to all the girls and women in Afghanistan who have had no access to an education for the past two years and counting. This film is for them.
They will not be forgotten."

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin surprised customers as he helped serve up coffee at a homeless charity’s coffee shop in London.
Crisis chief executive Matt Downie hailed the music star, who usually helps out in the charity’s warehouse once a year, as a “treasured, long-standing volunteer and supporter”.
He told The Sun: “We’re immensely grateful to Chris for giving his valuable time today to volunteer at our Shop from Crisis Finsbury Park store, where he helped make our customers’ Christmas shopping extra special.
“All our volunteers, whether new to Crisis or longstanding ones like Chris, play a crucial role in our mission to end homelessness. Next week we’ll be mobilising a unique volunteering effort as we open our Christmas services to support over 7,000 people facing homelessness across Great Britain, at one of the toughest times of the year.”

Exclusive: Sony Pictures Classics is in exclusive negotiations to acquire Daddio, the Christy Hall-directed two-hander starring Sean Penn and Dakota Johnson. The film established itself as a bright spot in its premiere at Telluride and then at Toronto. SPC will get North America, Latin America and territories throughout Europe and Asia.
Hall, who co-created the series I Am Not Okay With This, makes her feature directorial debut armed with a taxi cab, two terrific actors and a razor-sharp script in which a driver and his fare get to know each other and intimate aspects of their lives during the course of a traffic-snarled road trip from JFK to midtown Manhattan.
Penn plays the cab driver, who engages his passenger in small talk that becomes gradually more revealing. Johnson plays the young woman who is navigating an affair with a married father and who clearly has misgivings about it. Penn,...

At the heart of Pham Tien An’s sprawling feature debut, Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell, is a protagonist so unmoored from his surroundings that he looks forever on the cusp of floating away at the slightest breeze. Thien (Le Phong Vu) first appears sitting in an outdoor café in Saigon with a few friends, a local pickup game of soccer playing out to his right and the patrons behind him cheering on a televised professional match in between bites of food. Ignoring the hubbub around him, Thien asks his friends about matters of faith but looks uninterested in his own topic, zoning out as others talk about their religious beliefs.
Thien is so alienated from his environment that when a motorcycle crashes next to the café, he’s one of the few people in the vicinity who doesn’t react, remaining seated as others head over to survey the damage.

There are few pulpy visualizations of revenge that play as satisfyingly as the climax of Martin Campbell’s The Mask of Zorro. Released 25 years ago, the still surprisingly lithe and surefooted swashbuckler culminates with a multigenerational crescendo of vengeance, which is served bloody and fierce. On one level of a crumbling Californian gold mine, the original Zorro is a now aged and dying Don Diego de la Vega (Anthony Hopkins), and he grapples in his last breath with the man who stole his life and imprisoned him in hell for 20 years. Yet a literal platform below this Count of Monte Cristo passion play is something even bleaker and more vicious: the storm of swords unleashed by a younger Zorro (Antonio Banderas) and his own object of disdain: Capt. Harrison Love (Matt Letscher).
When Zorro carves an “M” across Capt. Love’s face, there is no wink or playful banter one...

On June 27, “America’s Got Talent” season 18 continued with the fifth installment of audition episodes. In this initial stage of the competition, each judge is given one “golden buzzer” decision to make where they can send an act straight through to the live shows. Typically we see someone on the panel make this decision in each episode, but on Tuesday’s “Auditions 5” all 12 acts to perform came up short. Surprisingly, the night’s final act, singer Lachune, did not have the gold confetti rain down her despite a beautiful and powerful rendition of “Yellow.” Watch her full performance in the video above.
Before singing for the judges, Lachune introduced herself as both a student and a vocal teacher living in Texas after growing up in a family of singers in South Carolina. She told Simon Cowell that she’s held herself back from taking the stage because she’s been an observer of other singers instead.

As repeated numerous times, the importance of the source material is immense when it comes to comic-book-oriented adaptations, especially at a time when creators are getting sidelined by big studios and corporate giants despite their works being responsible for the multimillion-dollar adaptations in the first place. Most of the time, the makers of these adaptations take artistic liberties and interpret the narrative in their own ways, which very seldom surpasses the source. The recently released Dceu flick The Flash draws heavily from the seminal story Flashpoint, written and drawn by Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert, a story that had an unprecedented effect on DC universe’s continuity. Although the movie extensively deals with the source’s time-travel narrative, alternate timelines, and multiverse-related themes, there are some crucial changes that give it a distinctiveness of its own. We will discuss a major portion of the similarities and differences between the source...

Elham Ehsas in Yellow
It’s a bright, sunny day when I speak with Elham Ehsas. He’s relaxing outside in the centre of London, four and a half thousand miles from where he was born, but Afghanistan is still very much in his heart. He’s recently directed and starred in a short film, Yellow, which depicts an encounter between a Talib shopkeeper and a young woman who has come in to buy her first, now obligatory, chadari, the garment without which she will no longer be allowed to go outside. At the time of publication, it has just screened at the Palm Springs Short Film Festival, one of the most prestigious short film showcases in the world, and it’s heading for London as part of Refugee Week. Elham and I begin our conversation by talking about his own experience of leaving Afghanistan and growing up in the UK.

On Wednesday (12 April) night’s episode of the US version of the top-secret celebrity singing contest, UFO defeated Lamp and Dandelion for a spot in the semi-finals.

For her final clue, Dandelion teased that she has “plenty of experience with space”, leading Scherzinger and fellow judges Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy and Robin Thicke to guess Sara Bareilles, Alicia Witt, or Zendaya were under the mask.
Lamp followed next with her performance of the 1986 song “Venus” by Bananarama.
Finalising her clue package, Lamp said: “Let me spell it out: M-a-x-i-m.”

Chaney starts with a problem facing indie filmmakers and obsessive autobiographers: hard drives and digital video fail easily. Although not explored by Chaney, master filmmakers like Martin Scorsese insist on making physical 35mm prints of films they shot digitally and storing them in salt mines rather than on corruptible servers or digital physical media.
A sweeping, often playful odyssey, The Arc of Oblivion seeks out expert help in exploring the nature of archiving, including the gatekeepers who decide what is important to keep record of. Haunted by the spirit of lost footage he filmed one evening while on his parents’ farm––while he...

The buzz is legit.
Prime Video’s Swarm kicked off the South by Southwest Film & Television Festival on Friday night with its world premiere – a two-episode screening that left audiences gasping and applauding.
“We know that the show is propulsive,” warned co-creator and showrunner Janine Nabers, who made the series (trailer below) along with Atlanta colleague Donald Glover, who directed the pilot. “We know that it’s going to evoke a lot of conversation. We know that people are going to have a lot of responses and may be angry or really inspired. So I just want you guys to know that if you have any feelings after watching this, and if you really want to tweet about it, then tweet at Donald.”
While Glover didn’t attend in person, he taped a mock Cameo message that played before the screening where he pretended as if Amazon had paid him...

The last Grammys featured some heavy hitters in the general categories. Artists like Steve Lacy, Beyoncé, Harry Styles, and Doja Cat were among the biggest acts of 2022, so it was no surprise to see them there. However, while their nomination wasn’t necessarily a surprise, seeing Coldplay among the final 10 for Album of the Year for “Music of the Spheres” definitely felt weird. In theory, it wasn’t: Coldplay are Grammy favorites and their previous album, “Everyday Life,” also got in. But how can a band have such a stranglehold on the Grammys when they are past their prime, both commercially and critically? Coldplay’s Grammy history is definitely one to envy, but perhaps their most impressive Grammy moment was one of their biggest wins: Record of the Year for their now-classic “Clocks” in 2004.

Origins is our recurring series that gives artists a space to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, Canadian duo Babygirl breaks down what inspired their new single, “Sore Eyes.”
There’s a comforting sweetness to Babygirl’s music, even in the most fraught phrases.
The Toronto duo, comprised of Kiki Frances and Cameron Bright and one of our Rising Artists to Watch for 2023, have a knack for wistful, dreamy indie pop. While their nostalgic sound recalls the warm malaise of ’90s alternative rock, the band’s lyrics strike a contemporary chord, blending sad, solitary images with moments of crystalline clarity and emotional weight.
Now, after their terrific 2021 EP Losers Weepers, Babygirl are back with “Sore Eyes,” the first single off their upcoming EP Be Still My Heart, out April 14th. The track feels apt for the transition from winter to spring, and the sweet relief of...

Chris Martin and H.E.R. are just two of many fans excited to see Rihanna perform at the Super Bowl on Sunday.

“We have performed with her a few times,” Martin said during a recent interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1. “And you’re right, it is rarer and rarer for her to just sing, which is what makes it even more special.”
“And in a strange way, it shows that she really, really wants to do it,” he added.
“No one can make Rihanna do anything at this point, and so I think the fact that she has chosen to do it now, when her stock couldn’t be-,...
