In “Downwind,” a documentary executive produced by Matthew Modine, directors Mark Shapiro and Douglas Brian Miller chronicle the lethal effects that nuclear testing on American soil has had on U.S. citizens.
The Oscar hopeful reveals that from 1951 to 1992, Mercury, Nevada, was the site for the testing of 928 large scale nuclear weapons. Wind dispersed radioactive fallout from those atmospheric blasts (mushroom clouds) and underground testing (venting) in a seemingly unpredictable manner to people living “downwind.” The United States Department of Justice defines “downwinders,” also known as lab rats, as human beings who live in counties located downwind from Nevada Test Site in the states of Utah, Nevada and Arizona.
The film explains that the radiation led to various diseases, mainly cancer. Shapiro and Miller also highlight how Hollywood star John Wayne and numerous members of the cast and crew of the 1956 movie “The Conqueror” died, arguably, of cancer due to...

"We own that flag, too." Gravitas is releasing this documentary later this week - check out the film's trailer. Downwind is about one of the little known side effects of the Manhattan Project (seen in Oppenheimer) - the fallout that affected downwind communities. Hiroshima. Nagasaki. Mercury, Nevada? The latter was the site for the testing of 928 large-scale nuclear weapons from 1951 through 1992. Martin Sheen narrates this harrowing exposé of the US's disregard for everyone living... downwind. A harrowing doc that exposes an infamous chapter of American history and the ongoing health consequences for downwinder communities, mostly comprised of Native Americans, Mormons and ranchers. It is the story of a Latino based community in the Tularosa Basin that has global implications for a world grappling with the proliferation of nuclear weapons and a seeming disregard for the true cost of their development, detonation, and disposal. Executive Produced by Matthew Modine and Adam Rackoff,...

Scott Waugh whose credits include “Act of Valor” and the upcoming “The Expendables 4,” is attached to direct the upcoming documentary “Escape to Atlantis,” based on the findings of Seattle native Dr. Jason Rubin who has used deductive reasoning, the writings of philosopher Plato and cutting-edge satellite sonar imagery to pinpoint the location of the fabled lost island of Atlantis.
Said Waugh: “Every story, whether fact or fable, has a character we believe in and hope they prevail. Wouldn’t it be great to be part of a story where our protagonist wins and redefines the world’s truth?” “If Dr. Rubin has found Atlantis, not only does he continually save lives in the ER room, but he will have risen the dead of those lost in Plato’s fable and will redefine our history. That is a story I want to be a part of,” he added.
The documentary is being produced by Rubin,...
