When 'Phineas and Ferb' first started to air, Disney Channel was nowhere near as good as it used to be and still isn't. Instead of the likes of the animated Disney shows of the 80s and 90s, most of it was and still is animated shows with childish humour and Disney Channel sitcoms and unfortunately it tended to not be the good ones. This continued throughout the whole of 'Phineas and Ferb's' run to the extent that this became one of the few shows airing on the Channel worth watching.
Absolutely loved the concept for "The Beak", it is a very nostalgic one and very entertaining and inventive when done well. It may not be an original kind of story in general, but for 'Phineas and Ferb' it was different. And it was different done brilliantly, the execution being done affectionately and entertainingly throughout. "The Beak" is not quite one of my favorite 'Phineas and Ferb' episodes overall, but it is to me one of the best of Season 2.
"The Beak's" animation is still wonderfully vibrant with very rich attention to detail. The music is dynamic with the action and the theme song is insanely catchy with very clever and quotable lyrics that anybody still in school fishing for how to spend their vacation will relate to.
Furthermore, the writing is a triumph. The dialogue is sharp and intelligent, with plenty of laugh-out-loud lines and witty exchanges. The gags are many and they are beautifully timed and never less than very amusing, all without being too manic or lacking in breathing space. The concept was great and inventive on paper, the execution is even more so. "The Beak" treats its setting with great affection and everybody involved were clearly having fun with it, the complete opposite of wasted.
'Phineas and Ferb' tends to follow a formula, but there is a lot of variety and imagination here in "The Beak" that it does not feel formulaic at all. Loved what was done with Phineas and the guest characters are a colourful hoot, especially the villain. The interaction is spot on, primarily in the wonderfully wacky Doofenschmirtz subplot. As is the voice acting, with the guest stars stealing the show from the regulars. Was not expecting Ben Stiller to voice a villain this well.
Concluding, brilliant. 10/10.
