First look images have been unveiled of Nikki Amuka-Bird in upcoming survival thriller “Jericho Ridge.”
The film tells the story of North Washington county sheriff Tabby (Amuka-Bird), who finds herself alone in the sheriff’s office one night while her colleagues are out on patrol. But she soon finds out they’ve been set up by a murderous drug cartel while she herself comes under siege at the office, where she must battle desperately to save herself and her son.
Amuka-Bird is best-known for “Jupiter Ascending” and “Old.” She recently wrapped on an adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Persuasion” alongside Dakota Johnson.
In first stills from “Jericho Ridge,” which has been shooting in Kosovo (subbing for North Washington), Amuka-Bird can be seen in her deputy sheriff’s uniform pointing a gun (above) while “This is England” star Michael Socha, who plays redneck crook Earl Macready, can be seen in another...

Vienna-based sales outlet Square Eyes has acquired Tim Leyendekker’s first feature “Feast” ahead of its world premiere in the Tiger Competition of the Rotterdam Film Festival. Variety has been given exclusive access to the trailer.
Based on the Groningen HIV case, in which three men drugged other men and infected them with their own HIV-infected blood, “Feast” is described by Square Eyes as “a bold and provocative film that skilfully reflects the questions of life, death and morality that have emerged from one of the most disquieting stories in contemporary Dutch life.”
Unfolding over seven individual vignettes, each directed by Leyendekker but shot in collaboration seven different cinematographers, the film blends reportage and surrealism, disbelief and empathy to unpack the repercussions and reverberations of a singularly shocking series of events.
Leyendekker told Variety: “With ‘Feast,’ I hope I can get people to actively think about the many different sides to a news story.

World of Tomorrow Episode Three Review: An Aesthetically Inventive and Narratively Complex Evolution
Throughout the whole of Don Herzfeldt’s World of Tomorrow trilogy, one thing is always constant; even in a future of amazing technology, it will be the ineffable interior of the human soul that will hold the most value. Clones, robots, and time travel may allow for new norms in terms of human accomplishment and lifespan, but they will never fill the void of those things we value as children, devoid of concepts of expense and mortality. It is this tenet that guides Hertzfeldt’s narrative and soul throughout the first two installments, and it finds new and more absurd heights in his third, The Absent Destinations of David Prime.
With such a guiding principle, it is no wonder that over the last five years, Hertzfeldt has crafted what might be the crowning achievement of modern science fiction. Each chapter of his trilogy—which one can only hope will someday...

“It” may be a box office smash, but it’s hardly the only horror movie worth talking about these days. Just 17 years in, and the 21st century has already played home to a remarkable number of truly chilling and inventive horror offerings, from a resurgence in J-horror remakes to a continued affection for the classic series of yesteryear, to the massive dominance of the “Conjuring” movie universe and even a “Saw” franchise so dominant that it’s already cycled back into resurrection territory, and that’s just the mainstream stuff.

Over the last several years, filmmaker Mike Flanagan has quickly established himself as one of the best and most assured genre storytellers of the last decade. From Absentia to Oculus to Hush, as well as Ouija: Origin of Evil and Before I Wake (which this writer is still patiently waiting for a Stateside release), Flanagan has a proven track record as a confident director, and his latest project, Gerald’s Game, is another example of his ability to tell uniquely compelling stories in a way that only he can.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Flanagan about his experiences adapting the acclaimed Stephen King novel for Netflix, the challenges he faced with both the material as well as keeping his mostly single location story intriguing on a visual level. Flanagan also chatted about collaborating with “force of nature” Carla Gugino for Gerald’s Game and how she...

Mike Flanagan has been on a pretty successful run when it comes to horrors. With Absentia, Oculus, Hush and Ouija: Origin of Evil, it is fair to say he has brought us well made horror that actually delivers. Now that Gerald’s Game has arrived on Netflix, can he continue his success.
Gerald’s Game is the story of Jessie Birlingame (Carla Gugino) who agrees to go on a retreat with her husband Gerald (Bruce Greenwood) to find the spark in her marriage. Letting him handcuff her to the bed to spice up their love life, things go horribly wrong when he dies of a heart attack, leaving Jessie trapped with her own mental demons, along with what lurks in the shadows of the seemingly empty house.

Warning: spoilers ahead. For the record, I never cracked open Stephen King's Gerald's Game because I just couldn't take what the cover --- a pair of handcuffs hanging from a bedpost, its top carved into a crouching, hurting woman --- indicated. This week at Fantastic Fest has been rough, and I wasn't sure if I was ready to watch this after so much callous behavior by members of the festival here in Austin. (Google it if you don't know to what I'm referring; I'm not here to argue with you.) However, with Mike Flanagan (Hush, Oculus, Absentia) at the helm, I was willing to give it a go. I'd seen his work before, and I knew he was talented. I'd also recently heard him speak...

Fantastic Fest alum and kickass director Mike Flanagan (Oculus, Absentia, Hush) brings the U.S. premiere of Gerald's Game to Austin, and we'll also get to see the world premiere of 1922, the adaptation of King's novella of the same name, from director Zak Hilditch. As a mark of respect for the original makers, the director of Dobaara, Prawaal Raman kept a screening for the director of Oculus – Mike Flanagan and its Producer – Trevor Macy. Mike Flanagan, one of the biggest names in the world of Horror genre today having directed films like Oculus, Hush, Ouija and Absentia and was keen to see how Prawaal’s Indian interpretation ‘Dobaara’ had turned out. As it turned out, he was quite overwhelmed with the film and was all praise for Prawaal’s treatment and the differences in creative choices made from Oculus to Dobaara. He felt that Prawaal has done complete justice to the original.
Mike said, “I just had a chance to see Dobaara and I thought it was fantastic! The cast is wonderful across the board. Prawaal did an amazing job in making this film. It’s been a real honour to be able to see it.

Turning a much loved literary classic into a TV series isn’t easy, but Netflix is onto a winner with Mike Flanagan…
Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting Of Hill House might be the best ghost story ever written. Published in 1959, it’s about a makeshift team of paranormal investigators moving into the legendarily haunted Hill House in an attempt to document and analyse the supernatural phenomena manifesting within its walls – but it’s really about grief, and guilt, and repression, and the desperate longing for a home. It’s beautifully constructed, impeccably written, and genuinely terrifying.
See related Doctor Who: Extremis geeky spots and Easter eggs
And now it’s being turned into a 10-part Netflix series.
It’s a story that, at least on the surface, appears to lend itself quite easily to screen adaptations, and in fact it’s already been turned into two films: The Haunting (1963) and,...

An Ouija board is meant to be a tool or toy, depending on how you view it, to communicate with the spirit world. It’s a device that conjures messages from the “magically moving” wooden or plastic planchette while participants nervously sit in a circle waiting to see if someone will reach out to them from the other side. Often in situations like this (trust me, I have tried this as a kid) you hunch over the board with scared friends and jump at the slightest noise that breaks the silence. So, even though the triangular guide didn’t move an inch, it was the silence that scared us. It’s the possibility that something could call out from the quiet stillness. It’s essentially the fear of communication, and unfortunately for Ouija: Origin Of Evil, it’s the over abundance of talking that kills the mood in this 60’s seance.

During our interview, Flanagan discussed stepping into the world of Ouija to help get the series back on track after a less than enthusiastic response to the original film, the pressure of coming onto a project that wasn’t 100% his vision, wanting to pay tribute to the horror films he grew up on, and some of the retro filmmaking approaches he utilized while in production on Ouija: Origin of Evil.

The first Ouija film scored at the box office, but few loved it. Ouija 2? A big improvement...
It's possible that many of you clicking on this review just want to know if this is a better movie than 2014's Ouija. The short answer is yes and substantially so. It's being marketed as a new standalone story (and, indeed, you don't need to see Ouija at all to understand Origin Of Evil) but viewers with long/detailed memories will pick up quickly that this is fact an origin story - set 47 years earlier - for evil ghost Doris from the first film. Luckily, between the period setting and the change in creative team, they've done a good job of distancing it and, while the board may look the same, we're playing a very different game.

Thought to be one of a new generation of horror filmmakers taking the genre into a welcome Renaissance, Mike Flanagan spent many years cutting his teeth directing television in the ten years between his second and third films. While his 2011 thriller Absentia did find a cult following, it wasn’t until his next film Oculus premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2013 when Hollywood started to take notice.
That led to a couple other films including making Hush with Blumhouse Productions, who around the same time hired Flanagan to write and direct a prequel to their 2014 horror hit, Ouija.
Ouija: Origin of Evil takes its prequel status quite literally by shifting the story back to 1967 when a single widowed mother Alice Zander (Elizabeth Reaser) and her two daughters are helping to pay the rent by holding rigged séances. Mike Flanagan’s film is essentially a branding exercise and its setup formulaic, but the director injects plenty of fun into this story of supernatural possession
Ouija, 2014’s rapidly forgotten exercise in crash-bang-wallop horror, was chiefly notable as a business proposition, born of a deal struck between Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes outfit and boardgame nabobs Hasbro to convert the latter’s products into movies. Still, it was cheap enough to turn a profit on wide release – $103m (£84m) on a $5m budget – and so, this Halloween, we’re offered a prequel that claims to fill in some of the devil board’s backstory. “The spirit world is unpredictable,” its phoney occultist heroine Madame Zander (Elizabeth Reaser) informs us. The movie business, as we know very well, is not.

Director Mike Flanagan chats to us about making a sequel to Ouija, and those Halloween rumours...
Many horror fans were unsurprised but unattracted by the prospect of a sequel to Ouija... until it was announced who would be writing and directing. Mike Flanagan has very quickly become a bit of a star in the horror world, and deservedly so. His films are brilliantly well-made, his ideas are complex, and he's got great storytelling instincts.
And, for what it's worth, his Ouija sequel is actually a prequel, being set in the late 60s. But it's not just your typical period piece where a setting in time is evoked through costume, production design, music and, if you're lucky, the cinematography.
Flanagan took one wild step beyond with his movie, and I started by asking him about this when we talked last week.
Tell me if I'm mad. I saw this film digitally but.

Universal Pictures released the first clip from Mike Flanagan’s (Absentia, Oculus, Hush) Ouija: Origin of Evil, which appears to take a lot of inspiration from James Wan’s movies like The Conjuring and Insidious, but also gives nods to classics such as The Exorcist. If things had gone as promised, you’d be able to see “Before I Wake,” a fantasy/horror film by rising genre talent Mike Flanagan, in theaters this weekend. But just a few weeks ago, Relativity Media, which has been plagued by financial difficulties over the last couple of years, bumped it out of its release berth today—the fourth announced debut come and gone for the film. September 9 had seemed to be the most solid date yet, with posters and trailers touting the release, but then came the latest disappointment (appropriately enough, Relativity slotted “The Disappointments Room” in its place). For those who admired Flanagan’s previous films, including “Absentia,” “Oculus” and “Hush” (the latter actually shot after “Wake”), it has been a distressing series of events, though not nearly as much as it has been for Flanagan himself.

As I can continue to point out, I seriously cannot believe how cool Ouija: Origin of Evil looks, although I am a huge fan of director Mike Flanagan (Absentia, Oculus, Hush). Mike Flanagan’s spectral sequel gets a trailer. Sequels rarely make anyone all that excited. Except, of course, when they’re helmed by visionaries who have proven themselves masters of their dark craft. Absentia, Oculus and Hush director Mike Flanagan is one such visionary and today, Universal dropped the trailer for his curious followup to the hit…

Mike Flanagan is a man who needs less of an introduction with each horror film he makes, as dictated by the positive buzz surrounding Absentia and Oculus. Audiences latch on to his tight direction and simplistically sinister visuals, to the point where any conversation about up-and-coming genre filmmakers is usually started with his name. He quickly found himself courted by Jason Blum and Trevor Macy, which led to a few yet-to-be-released features, and the chance to right Ouija‘s wrongs through a much more adept sequel. Flanagan’s a hot commodity, and his latest film, Hush proves why – to a degree.
Admittedly, I’m positively lukewarm on both Absentia and Oculus, and Hush evoked an almost mirrored reaction. Flanagan is a talented filmmaker, as he’s able to market easily-digestible stories (some more than others) with an engaging plethora of taught, tense shot selection. He’s a dream director for mainstream horror,...

I’m a huge horror fan, and one of my surprise favorite horror movies in the past couple of years was Oculus, the critically-acclaimed mainstream debut of director Mike Flanagan (he had previously directed the lesser-known Absentia). I’ve been eagerly awaiting Flanagan’s follow-up to Oculus for months, and Netflix (who has worldwide distribution rights to the film) has finally delivered with Hush (after its March premiere at South by Southwest). The film got rave reviews at its festival premiere, but was the hype and anticipation really worth it? Thankfully, yes. To summarize the story, Hush is a horror-thriller in which a deaf and mute author (played by Kate

Home invasion thrillers share several aspects, but one of the more common among them is that the home being invaded is typically occupied by a single woman. Clearly women shouldn’t be allowed to live alone, but until we can pass a law forbidding such things from happening their dwellings will continue to be death traps. Maddie (Kate Siegel) is the latest woman to tempt fate by living on her own, but she has a second characteristic that potentially marks her as even more of a victim in the eyes of an assailant — she’s deaf. An illness took her hearing when she was just a teenager, and while she’s found a career as a writer and maintains relationships with family and a seemingly small group of friends, she’s also grown a bit withdrawn over the years. She’d rather avoid situations — dealing with an ex, meeting new people — but her hand is forced when...

“I didn’t pick isolation; isolation picked me.” In just a few years, Mike Flanagan has evolved into one of the more interesting genre directors out there with films like Absentia, Oculus, and the upcoming Before I Wake. With the home invasion thriller Hush, Flanagan embraces his indie roots with yet another exceptional character-driven horror experience that proves there are still effective ways to terrify audiences when you have a strong concept, smart script and talented cast at your disposal.
Hush centers on Maddie (Kate Siegel), a writer who specializes in crafting thriller novels and lives in isolation after bacterial meningitis claimed her voice and her hearing at an early age. Being perfectly content to shut out a world she already feels distanced from, her only real companions are her cat named Bitch and a handful of neighbors, including Sarah (Samantha Sloyan), who does her best to keep the reluctant...

Mike Flanagan ("Oculus," "Absentia") is set to direct and Annalise Basso ("The Red Road," "Oculus") is set to star in the sequel to the horror thriller "Ouija" at Universal, Blumhouse, Platinum Dunes and Hasbro
The first film revolved around a group of friends fighting the supernatural forces behind the ancient spirit board game. Said board will be at the center of this film as well.
Flanagan will also co-write the script with Jeff Howard while Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are producing. The film is currently targeting an October 21st 2016 release.
A sequel isn't surprising - the first film cost just $5 million to make and made more than $100 million worldwide.

The Bone Box is a new horror film moving towards pre-production. Written and to-be-directed by first-time helmer, Luke Genton, the film follows a grave robber who comes to believe he’s being haunted by those he stole from.
The Bone Box is a one-location, character-driven ghost story in the vein of The Others and Insidious. The film stars Maria Olsen (Starry Eyes, Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief), Austin Highsmith (Dolphin Tale, Dolphin Tale 2, Gangster Squad), and Gareth Koorzen (My Name Is Vivienne). Rounding out the cast is the popular Katie Parker (Absentia, Oculus).
The Bone Box is a passion project; one that Genton has been developing with Koorzen for the past year. The team is attaching talent, shooting a teaser, and will soon be launching a Kickstarter campaign to fund the project. When I discovered Mike Flanagan’s independently made Absentia on DVD (ignore that horrible cover), I felt like this was a new voice in horror. While his style seemed to harken back to good old fashioned storytelling, he still had modern sensibilities. While I didn’t care for Oculus, it was still different enough to not be totally dismissed. Hopefully, Flanagan can average out filmography with Before I Wake starring Thomas Jane & Kate Bosworth. Check out the trailer & images below!
