Quotes

  • [Rick tells Jenner that he's grateful for the chance]

    Rick Grimes : I'm grateful.

Dr. Edwin Jenner : The day will come when you won't be.

  • [Daryl swings an axe repeatedly at the C.D.C. door]

Dr. Edwin Jenner : Those doors are designed to withstand a rocket launcher.

Daryl Dixon : Well, your head ain't!

[as Daryl tries swinging the axe at Jenner]

  • [Jenner asks the computer Vi to define H.I.T.s to the group]

Dr. Edwin Jenner : In the event of a catastrophic power failure... in a terrorist attack, for example... H.I.T.s are deployed to prevent any organisms from getting out.

    Rick Grimes : H.I.T.s?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : Vi, define.

Vi : H.I.T.s - high-impulse thermobaric fuel-air explosives consists of a two-stage aerosol ignition that produces a blast wave of significantly greater power and duration than any other known explosive except nuclear. The vacuum-pressure effect ignites the oxygen between 5,000 and 6,000 degrees and is used when the greatest loss of life and damage to structures is desired.

Dr. Edwin Jenner : [Jenner in a low voice]  It sets the air on fire. No pain. An end to sorrow, grief... Regret. Everything.

  • [Jenner tells the group what happens to the C.D.C. facility in 28 minutes]

Rick Grimes : What happens in 28 minutes?

Rick Grimes : [Rick yells to Jenner]  What happens in 28 minutes!

    Daryl Dixon : Come on!

Dr. Edwin Jenner : [as Jenner screams to the group]  You know what this place is? We protected the public from very nasty stuff! Weaponized smallpox! Ebola strains that could wipe out half the country! Stuff you don't want getting out! Ever!

  • [Jenner takes Rick's group into the housing area of the C.D.C. facility]

Dr. Edwin Jenner : If you shower, go easy on the hot water.

Glenn Rhee : [Glenn smiles]  Hot water?

Theodore 'T-Dog' Douglas : [T-Dog smiles]  That's what the man said.

  • [Rick tells Jenner that it was only a matter of time before they died out there]

Rick Grimes : You don't know what it's like out there. You may think you do, but you don't. We'd have died out there. It was only a matter of time. There's too many of those things. My... my boy... My... my wife, I never... I never told 'em what I really thought. I never even hinted, just... Just kept it in. Kept it in and kept us moving, you know. Just kept it in. Kept us...

Dr. Edwin Jenner : It'll all be okay. It'll be okay.

  • [Jenner tells the group that he's all that's left]

Rick Grimes : Where is everybody? The other doctors, the staff?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : I'm it. It's just me here.

Lori Grimes : What about the person you were speaking with? Vi?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : Vi, say hello to our guests. Tell them... Welcome.

Vi : [Vi responds]  Hello, guests. Welcome.

Dr. Edwin Jenner : [Jenner looks to Rick]  I'm all that's left.

  • [Jenner checks on each person's blood in the C.D.C. facility]

Andrea : What's the point? If we were infected, we'd all be running a fever.

Dr. Edwin Jenner : I've already broken every rule in the book letting you in here. Let me just at least be thorough.

  • [Jenner tells the computer Vi to begin the playback video on TS-19]

Dr. Edwin Jenner : Few people ever got a chance to see this. Very few.

Carl Grimes : [Carl looks at the large digital monitor]  Is that a brain?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : An extraordinary one. Not that it matters in the end.

  • [Jenner tells the computer Vi to scan forward to the first event]

Dr. Edwin Jenner : It invades the brain like meningitis. The adrenal glands hemorrhage, the brain goes into shutdown, then the major organs. Then death. Everything you ever were or ever will be... Gone.

Sophia Peletier : [Sophia asks Carol]  Is that what happened to Jim?

    Carol Peletier : Yes.

Lori Grimes : [Andrea starts to sniffle]  She lost somebody two days ago. Her sister.

Dr. Edwin Jenner : I lost somebody, too. I know how devastating it is.

  • [Jenner tells Rick that there is no hope for mankind]

Dr. Edwin Jenner : [Jenner looks to Rick]  You do want this. Last night, you said, you knew it was just a matter of time before everybody you loved was dead.

Shane Walsh : What? You really said that? After all your big talk?

Rick Grimes : I had to keep hope alive, didn't I?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : There is no hope. There never was.

Rick Grimes : There's always hope. Maybe it won't be you, maybe not here, but somebody somewhere...

Andrea : What part of 'Everything's gone' do you not understand?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : Listen to your friend. She gets it. This is what takes us down. This is our extinction event.

  • [Daryl tries talking to Jenner about the building shutting itself down]

Daryl Dixon : Hey man, I'm talking to you. What do you mean it's shutting itself down? How can a building do anything?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : You'd be surprised.

  • [Daryl sees Jenner carrying a machine gun on his shoulder]

Daryl Dixon : Doctors always go around packing heat like that?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : There were plenty left lying around. I familiarized myself. But you look harmless enough.

Dr. Edwin Jenner : [Jenner looks at Carl]  Except you. I'll have to keep my eye on you.

    [as Carl smiles]

  • [Jenner tells the group what happened to everyone at the C.D.C. facility]

Dr. Edwin Jenner : Well, when things got bad, a lot of people just left. Went off to be with their families. And when things got worse, when the military cordon got overrun, the rest bolted.

Shane Walsh : Every last one?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : No... Many couldn't face walking out the door. They... Opted out. There was a rash of suicides. That was a bad time.

Andrea : You didn't leave. Why?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : I just kept working. Hoping to do some good.

Glenn Rhee : Dude, you are such a buzzkill, man.

  • [Jenner tells the computer Vi to do an Enhanced Internal View of TS-19's brain]

Shane Walsh : [as the group sees the brain of TS-19]  What are those lights?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : It's a person's life... Experiences, memories. It's everything. Somewhere in all that organic wiring, all those ripples of light, is you... The thing that makes you unique. And human.

Daryl Dixon : You don't make sense ever?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : Those are synapses, electric impulses in the brain that carry all the messages. They determine everything a person says does or thinks from the moment of birth to the moment of death.

Rick Grimes : Death? That's what this is, a vigil?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : Yes. Or rather the playback of the vigil.

Andrea : This person died? Who?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : Test subject 19. Someone who was bitten and infected... And volunteered to have us record the process.

  • [Jenner tells the computer Vi to scan forward to the second event]

Dr. Edwin Jenner : The resurrection times vary wildly. We had reports of it happening in as little as three minutes. The longest we heard of was eight hours. In the case of this patient, it was two hours, one minute... Seven seconds.

Lori Grimes : It restarts the brain?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : No, just the brain stem. Basically, it gets them up and moving.

Rick Grimes : But they're not alive?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : [Jenner holds his arms out]  You tell me.

Rick Grimes : It's nothing like before. Most of that brain is dark.

Dr. Edwin Jenner : Dark, lifeless, dead. The frontal lobe, the neocortex, the human part... That doesn't come back. The you part. Just a shell driven by mindless instinct.

  • [Andrea tells Jenner that he has no clue what the cause of the disease is]

Andrea : You have no idea what it is, do you?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : It could be microbial, viral, parasitic, fungal.

Jacqui : Or the wrath of God?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : There is that.

  • [the group sees the clock counting down in the C.D.C. facility]

Dale Horvath : Dr. Jenner, I know this has been taxing for you and I hate to ask one more question, but... That clock... It's counting down. What happens at zero?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : The basement generators... They run out of fuel.

    Rick Grimes : And then?

Rick Grimes : [as Jenner walks off Rick asks the computer Vi]  Vi, what happens when the power runs out?

Vi : When the power runs out, facility-wide decontamination will occur.

  • [the group tries asking Jenner why the building power is shutting down]

Carol Peletier : Why is the air off? And the lights in our room?

Daryl Dixon : What's going on? Why is everything turned off?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : Energy use is being prioritized.

Dale Horvath : Air isn't a priority? And lights?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : It's not up to me. Zone 5 is shutting itself down.

  • [Jenner tells Andrea that like the French the power grid ran out of juice]

Dr. Edwin Jenner : It was the French.

    Andrea : What?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : They were the last ones to hold out as far as I know. While our people were bolting out the doors and committing suicide in the hallways, they stayed in the labs till the end. They thought they were close to a solution.

    Jacqui : What happened?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : The same thing that's happening here. No power grid. Ran out of juice. The world runs on fossil fuel. I mean, how stupid is that?

  • [Rick tells Jenner that all they want is a choice]

Rick Grimes : You're lying about no hope. If that were true, you'd have bolted with the rest or taken the easy way out. You didn't. You chose the hard path. Why?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : It doesn't matter.

Rick Grimes : It does matter. It always matters. You stayed when others ran. Why?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : Not because I wanted to. I made a promise... To her. My wife.

Andrea : Test subject 19 was your wife?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : She begged me to keep going as long as I could. How could I say no? She was dying. It should've been me on that table. I wouldn't have mattered to anybody. She was a loss to the world. Hell, she ran this place. I just worked here. In our field, she was an Einstein. Me? I'm just... Edwin Jenner. She could've done something about this. Not me.

Rick Grimes : Your wife didn't have a choice. You do. That's... That's all we want... A choice, a chance.

Lori Grimes : [Jenner looks over to Lori with tears in her eyes]  Let us keep trying as long as we can.

  • [the group find Jenner inside the shutter doors of the C.D.C. facility]

Dr. Edwin Jenner : Why are you here? What do you want?

    Rick Grimes : A chance.

Dr. Edwin Jenner : That's asking an awful lot these days.

    Rick Grimes : I know.

  • [Andrea asks Jenner if they're underground while inside the C.D.C. facility]

    Andrea : Are we underground?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : Are you claustrophobic?

    Andrea : A little.

Dr. Edwin Jenner : Try not to think about it.

  • [the group sees Jenner at the breakfast table in the morning]

Dale Horvath : Doctor, I don't mean to slam you with questions first thing...

Dr. Edwin Jenner : But you will anyway.

Andrea : [Andrea looks to Jenner]  We didn't come here for the eggs.

  • [Jenner tells the group there's nothing out there but a brutal life and agonizing death]

Dr. Edwin Jenner : You know what's out there... A short, brutal life and an agonizing death.

Dr. Edwin Jenner : [Jenner looks to Andrea]  Your... Your sister... What was her name?

    Andrea : Amy.

Dr. Edwin Jenner : Amy. You know what this does. You've seen it.

Dr. Edwin Jenner : [Jenner looks to Rick]  Is that really what you want for your wife and son?

    Rick Grimes : I don't want this!

  • [Jenner looks at the photograph of his wife on the desk]

Dr. Edwin Jenner : I did the best I could in the time that I had. I hope you'd be proud of that. We always think there's gonna be more time...

Dr. Edwin Jenner : [when the power generator to the C.D.C. shuts down]  ... Then it runs out.

  • [Rick asks for Jenner to open the doors now]

Rick Grimes : Hey, Jenner, open that door now.

Dr. Edwin Jenner : There's no point. Everything topside is locked down. The emergency exits are sealed.

Dale Horvath : Well, open the damn things.

Dr. Edwin Jenner : [Jenner looks to Rick]  That's not something I control. The computers do. I told you once that front door closed, it wouldn't open again. You heard me say that. It's better this way.

  • [Carol tells Jenner that her daughter doesn't deserve to die like this]

Carol Peletier : [Carol cries]  This isn't right. You can't just keep us here.

Dr. Edwin Jenner : One tiny moment... A millisecond. No pain.

Carol Peletier : [Carol holds Sophia crying]  My daughter doesn't deserve to die like this.

Dr. Edwin Jenner : Wouldn't it be kinder, more compassionate to just hold your loved ones and wait for the clock to run down?

  • [Jenner and Jacqui watch the camera monitor of Rick and the group getting out]

Dr. Edwin Jenner : They got out.

[Jenner looks to Jacqui as she smiles]

  • Rick Grimes : [Knocking]  How's the blood?

Dr. Edwin Jenner : No surprises
