Flip, flop, or haunt?
Nathan Fielder’s upcoming HGTV-spoof series “The Curse,” co-created with Benny Safdie, follows an elitist couple, played by Fielder and Emma Stone, who flip homes in developing areas for a reality TV show, produced by Safdie. Yet a dark twist plagues their latest project…
Per the official synopsis, Asher (Fielder) and Whitney (Stone) Siegel are married entrepreneurs (don’t call them gentrifiers!) whose latest plan is to flip houses and convert them into eco-friendly homes for the struggling residents of Española, New Mexico — all for an HGTV-style reality show being overseen by an ingratiating producer (Safdie) with demons of his own. From this premise, which nimbly touches upon inescapable American issues of race, class, and capital, Fielder and Safdie branch out into an increasingly tangled network of ethical and moral gray zones, expertly balancing the tender and the merciless.

Last year’s Spotlight Section managed to nab pair of highly sought-after titles in Bones and All and Women Talking and a pair of world premieres in She Said and Till. Another headline-making event is the world premiere of “The Curse,” a new A24 television series that will debut on Showtime this fall. The series comes from Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie and stars both men alongside Emma Stone.

Benny Safdie says that firing former collaborator Sebastian Bear-McClard following “disgusting” misconduct allegations against the Uncut Gems producer was about taking control and helped him learn that you “have to be much more careful.”
In an interview with GQ magazine to promote his role in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, the Elara Pictures co-founder and writer-director addressed the multiple allegations made against Bear-McClard by those who worked on Uncut Gems and Good Time. The interview marks one of the first public comments by the filmmaker other than a brief statement from him and brother Josh Safdie clarifying that they had terminated Bear-McClard from his role with the studio he co-founded.
That decision came after multiple women — including a 24-year-old whom the producer hired on Good Time in 2016 and began a sexual relationship with while she was 17 — disclosed that Bear-McClard had reached out to them through platforms like Instagram, and began engaging in inappropriate and harassing behavior,...

The yet-untitled film reteams the Safdies with Adam Sandler and is set for a Netflix release under Sandler’s production deal with the streamer. The film is set in the world of sports memorabilia collectors and also stars Megan Thee Stallion.

Marseille’s contradictions were particularly evident at this year’s Festival International du Cinéma Marseille, whose venues are located in the city’s loud, rundown, and graffiti-blanketed center. Not too long of a walk from the chaos one can find little oases of bourgeois indifference, from chic home décor shops to an Aztec-inspired Nikkei gastronomic haven. One doesn’t have to travel more than two feet from a festival screening to be confronted with a reality apparently unable to penetrate its air-conditioned theaters, at least not as patrons.
For one, it’s by and large privileged, white audience members who, following screenings, patronize the Blum brasserie, where festival talks are often held. There inside their hermetic bubble, as they sip on cappuccinos and nibble on pastries, it’s easy to imagine festival-goers indulging in discussions about injustice and decolonization while the racialized poor loiter outside, fundamentally alienated from it all.

Film-maker Fyzal Boulifa: ‘I need to engage with my country in this strange time of identity crisis’
The acclaimed British-Moroccan director, who made his name with 2019’s Lynn + Lucy, on growing up in white working-class Leicester, filming with nuance and the brutality of London
Fyzal Boulifa and I arrive together at his film distributor’s offices, to a boisterous welcome from a pair of French bulldogs. He stoically endures their enthusiasm while confiding under his breath that he is actually terrified of dogs. It seems an apt introduction to a director who spent more than a decade in the shadows, painstakingly teaching himself how to direct short films, before two of them burst into the sunlight with wins at the Cannes film festival.
It was immediately clear that he was something special. The Curse, his 2012 short, which was nominated for a Bafta, is a jewel-like fable of a young Moroccan woman persecuted by children who spot her consorting with a man outside a remote desert settlement.

Showtime will no longer be moving forward with four shows — “Gattaca,” “Seasoned,” “Split” and “Sweetness” — TheWrap can confirm.
The decision not to move forward with “Gattaca” came down to financials, a source familiar with the matter told TheWrap. At present, Showtime is interested in investing more in IP the network owns versus leased IP.
All projects will have the opportunity to be shopped elsewhere.
Little is known about the four projects, which were in development. Alex Gansa was announced to showrun and executive produce “Gattaca,” the TV adaptation of the 1997 sci-fi movie, with Gansa’s partner Howard Gordon executive producing. “Seasoned” was a scripted comedy from Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody that is based on their real-life relationship. “Sweetness” came from writer, director and producer Nick Stoller and Oscar-winner Emerald Fennell and has been described as a “female-driven anthology project.” Even less is known about “Split.”

Chris McCarthy continues to slim down Showtime’s content pipeline.
The premium cable network has passed on four projects: the reboot of Gattaca that would have brought Homeland duo Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa back to the Paramount Global outlet as well as Seasoned, the comedy inspired by the lives of married couple Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody that had previously had a series order. Also getting the pass are two projects that had been in development — Split and Sweetness.
Sony Pictures Television, which produces Gattaca and Sweetness, plans to shop both projects.
Showtime declined to comment.

“We are sending a message that our content doesn’t have to cost a fortune to watch,” said the CEO of fledgling streamer SkyShowtime, who said there could be more bundling in the future.
Monty Sarhan took the reins of the Comcast/Paramount Global Jv last year and has since overseen the hiring of 180 staff across seven offices, a rollout to more than 20 European territories in which Comcast’s Peacock and Now TV, and Paramount+ aren’t present, and the commissioning of a number of original series.
Speaking to Deadline before a Nem keynote in Dubrovnik, he said SkyShowtime’s pricing structure had been forged in response to “double digit inflation, a cost-of-living crisis and with war raging in Ukraine.”

Other than a large quantity of sweat, Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton join us to talk about the new eighth series of Inside No.9 (Inside No. 8?) and Big Tom Davis hangs out with Boyd to chat the new series of The Curse. Plus, we get ChatGPT to review the podcast and try very hard not to melt.

Unicorn Wars: "It’s Bambi meets Apocalypse Now in this provocative and strangely beautiful horror comedy from acclaimed filmmaker and illustrator Alberto Vazquez (Birdboy: The Forgotten Children), who uses its outrageous candy-colored premise to explore religious zealotry, the tortured legacies of military fascism, and the depths of the soul.
For ages, teddy bears have been locked in an ancestral war against their sworn enemy, the unicorns, with the promise that victory will complete the prophecy and usher in a new era. Aggressive, confident teddy bear Bluet and his sensitive, withdrawn brother Tubby could not be more different. As the rigors and humiliation of teddy bear bootcamp turn to the psychedelic horrors of a combat tour in the Magic Forest, their complicated history and increasingly strained relationship will come to determine the fate of the entire war."

Emma Stone has reportedly been cast in Edgar Wright’s adaptation of the novel by Adrian McKinty, ‘The Chain.’
Stone is said to be playing the role of a mother whose 11-year-old child is kidnapped, forcing her to kidnap another child to have hers released and continue the chain.
The movie tells the story of Rachel, who learns that her 11-year-old daughter has been kidnapped. The only way to get her back is to kidnap another child. Her daughter will be released only when the next victim’s parents kidnap another child. After the back-to-back releases of Hereditary and Midsommar in 2018 and 2019, respectively, it’s been a four-year wait for the next film from Ari Aster. While the Joaquin Phoenix-led Beau Is Afraid––recently rated R for “strong violent content, sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use, and language”––is set to bow in just a few months, it looks like we won’t have to wait as long for his fourth feature, with the first tidbits having arrived.
According to last week’s Production Weekly update (via Awards Worthy), Aster is in active development on a new feature, which A24 will once again produce. While no plot details were revealed for the untitled project, the update does note that Emma Stone and Christopher Abbott are attached:
It’s also not the first hint the trio was working together, as they were all recently spotted at a recent New Year’s Eve bash held by Robert Pattinson,...

In a fickle TV business where the top network posts rank at the bottom for job security, we lost two of the longest-tenured executives in just a couple of days: the CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz, who stepped down Monday, and David Nevins, Chairman and CEO, Paramount Premium Group and Chief Creative Officer, Paramount+ Scripted Series, whose exit was announced Thursday. Both were around the 12-year mark in their jobs.
The circumstances were different, though ownership changes and the never-ending evolution of the TV business were involved in both cases.
In addition to his reign atop of Showtime for the past dozen years, Nevins stepped in as Chief Creative Officer at CBS for two years after the ouster of Les Moonves. Then he added a string of responsibilities following the 2019 Viacom-CBS merger, including oversight of BET, Paramount TV Studios and Paramount+’s scripted programming. Announced by Arrow Video this morning, Ju-On: The Grudge Collection is due out this December, featuring a brand new 4K restoration of Japanese classic Ju-On: The Grudge.

“Ju-On”: the name given to a deadly curse spawned when someone dies in the grip of a violent rage. All who come into contact with it are doomed… Collected together for the first time, writer-director Takashi Shimizu’s Ju-On: The Grudge series represents the flesh-crawling pinnacle of Japanese chillers that swept the globe at the turn of the millennium.
The films introduce the anonymous family house in the suburbs of Tokyo where an unspeakable evil lingers alongside its residents, the ghastly mother-son pairing of Kayoko and Toshio Saeki.
