Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s entry into the MCU was one of those iconic moments in superhero cinema, that Sony badly wants to recreate. If it were up to them, the Tom Rothman-led studio would have reunited the three heroes once again in the hopes of making another $2 billion phenomenon. Marvel’s constant objection to this plan may have forced Sony to consider another option for Maguire and Garfield.

Mofac Animation has found Jesus.
Oscar Isaac has signed on to portray Jesus Christ in The King of Kings, the animated family film being made by the South Korean-based animation house. At the same time, Forest Whitaker has been tapped to give voice to the apostle Peter.
The duo join a growing A-list voice cast that includes Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, and Jojo Rabbit actor Roman Griffin Davis.
Seong-ho “Jay” Jang, known as a visual effects pioneer in Korea, is directing King of Kings while Anfernee Kim (Last Knights, John Woo’s The Crossing 2) is producing.
The faith-based feature is very loosely inspired by The Life of Our Lord, a little-known Charles Dickens short story that was published posthumously and that depicted the life and times of Jesus.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings screenwriter Dave Callaham is going from the Marvelverse to the Monsterverse.
The scribe, known for his action acumen, has been tapped to pen the next installment of Legendary’s Godzilla/Kong monster movie series.
The hiring comes in the wake of the box office success of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which has grossed close to $555 million worldwide. That is the biggest haul since 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, which peaked at $568 million. Empire, which is still in theaters, may also be one of the most profitable (if not the single most profitable) of the five movies in the series, as it only cost $135 million, per sources. Thus Legendary is keen to keep the monster juice flowing.

With Dune: Part Two and Civil War in theaters, it’s already been a great year for sci-fi, and that doesn’t even count goofball flicks like Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, or any other movies with the word “empire” in the title. Sure, it’s not all perfect. Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson, has been pulled from the release schedule and there’s no way that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will release this year. But overall, 2024 has been a strong start for sci-fi movies.
Even better, 2024 isn’t even halfway done. Per tradition, Den of Geek has put together a list of the big sci-fi movies heading your way for the rest of the year. This list doesn’t include upcoming sci-fi movies without firm release dates, but it will when they are announced. It will also be updated to add any movies we may have missed,...

One of the most notable animated superhero projects in recent years is definitely the ‘Spider-Verse’ franchise. The first movie ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ was a massive success, with the second movie’ Across the Spider-Verse’ breaking all kinds of records.
The film, the first from Sony Pictures Animation to hit theaters globally since ‘The Angry Birds Movie 2’ in 2019, received positive reviews and set various box office records. It outperformed its predecessor, grossing a whopping $690.5 million worldwide and becoming the third-highest-grossing film in the U.S. for 2023.

Hailee Steinfeld, who voices Gwen Stacy in the acclaimed Spider-Verse movies, will star opposite Michael B. Jordan in Ryan Coogler’s untitled supernatural thriller being made by Warner Bros. Pictures.
The buzzy project, the object of a high-profile bidding war in January, heads before cameras later this month in New Orleans and has been furiously casting up. Wunmi Mosaku, Delroy Lindo and Jack O’Connell, among others, make up the heady call sheet.
Little is known about the project — and what is known has yet to be confirmed by either the studio or Coogler. Insiders say the feature is set in the Jim Crow-era South and possibly involves both vampires and Southern supernatural traditions. Jordan may even be playing dual roles — as twin brothers.
However, some hazy casting details have leaked. Mosaku might be playing Jordan’s romantic interest (but of which twin?); O’Connell might be a racist antagonist; and Steinfeld...

The Spider-Verse films have very quickly become one of the most iconic adaptations of Spider-Man to have ever graced any medium of storytelling. Not only do they perfectly encapsulate the essence of the character, but they also balance serious conflicts with humor in the best way possible. They made several nods to iconic characters from the past that had fans ecstatic.

It is March 29, 2024, and the highly-anticipated Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is finally out in theaters worldwide. We can now enjoy the full scope of Sony’s animated Spider-Verse trilogy and give our final comments on one of the greatest animated trilogies in history. This is how it was supposed to happen. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse was initially scheduled to be released today, but the movie – as you know – has not been released; instead, some time ago, we received news that the movie has been delayed indefinitely.
While the delay was a direct result of the major SAG-AFTRA strike, as the actors couldn’t complete the recording process, the fact that it has been delayed indefinitely had some fans worried. Don’t worry, the movie is not scrapped, it will just take some time before we actually get to see it, but that is not a problem per se, as...

Forget those new live-action "Spider-Man" movies — for my money, the best new Spidey-related material resides in the animated "Spider-Verse" films. They're bright, colorful, inventive, funny, and emotional movies (even if "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" is only half a movie). Those films introduced us to Miles Morales, a teen who becomes Spider-Man in an alternate universe. While we're still waiting for the next full-length "Spider-Verse" film, "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse," we can get more of Miles via a new short film titled "The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story."
But this short film isn't your typical action-packed web-slinger story. It's instead a horror-tinged look at Miles' subconscious as he succumbs to the pressures of being Spider-Man. As our own Rafael Motamayor wrote in his review of the short film, "'The Spider Within' stands out by combining that theme with a love of horror and psychological thrillers, delivering a truly spooky short. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was the recent addition to one of the most beloved superhero series in recent times. Not only did it manage to maintain the hype of the first film, it also outdid it perfectly, not only setting up iconic characters for the next film but also telling an excellent story in a visually stunning manner.

Many would call the Spider-Verse series a perfect franchise and one of the biggest reasons for this is its directors and animators. It is quite a well-known fact in the film industry at this point that being a VFX artist is not easy. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse wowed audiences everywhere and became a bigger box office success than its predecessor. The rumors that Nicolas Cage might make a comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe are probably familiar to fans of both comic books and the Oscar-winning star. While many expect him to reprise his role as Ghost Rider in the upcoming flick Avengers: Secret Wars, it seems that the actor, 60, could be taking on a different Marvel character this time around.

“Spider-Verse” star Shameik Moore found himself in hot water on X (formerly Twitter) during the 2024 Oscars when he seemingly reacted to “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” losing the Academy Award for best animated feature to Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron” by posting a one word reaction: “Robbed.” Many fans were quick to criticize Moore, who voices Miles Morales in the animated franchise, and pointed out that Miyazaki is a master of animation who directed an equally acclaimed movie.

Reports are noting a live-action Spider-Man show is in the works with none other than Nicolas Cage starring in the leading role.
Nicolas Cage is in the middle of a superhero resurgence after first playing Ghost Rider nearly two decades ago, recently making a cameo appearance as Superman in 2023’s The Flash from the Dceu.
He also played a memorable role as Spider-Man Noir in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse for Sony Pictures, and he's already set for a comeback to the role in the upcoming Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse as well.

The box-office owners are lately in some trouble it seems. Looks like Marvel has no more room for hits and trials. With almost 60 percent of people aged 18 to 44, Marvel easily has one of the biggest fandoms in the world. With 4 movies in the top 10 list of highest-grossing movies of all time, Marvel has always been a delight to superhero lovers.
However, the MCU’s last two phases have been somewhat mediocre according to the fans. Eternals, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Black Widow fell short of our expectations in phase 4. To fans’ utter disappointment, even Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania didn’t kickstart a glamorous Phase 5. However, Marvel is taking some risks to get its reputation back on track with upcoming films.

Who'd have thunk a movie about a bunch of slobby ghost-hunting scientists would birth a franchise that's still going strong 40 years later? Call it fate, call it luck, call it karma (and call it more than a little Generation X nostalgia), "Ghostbusters" has endured all sorts of ups and downs on its unlikely journey to reaching middle age. Now, the stars of the late Ivan Reitman's original 1984 paranormal comedy (save for the late Harold Ramis) are coming back for a chapter that will see the old guard don their proton packs alongside a new generation of quipping, ghost-catching heroes.
"Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" is the direct followup to 2021's "Ghostbusters: Afterlife," itself a legacy sequel that introduced Egon Spengler's (Ramis) grown-daughter and grandkids as the heirs apparent to the family business. Contrary to its name, "Frozen Empire" will be hitting theaters just as things start to thaw out and winter gives way to spring,...

Let’s get this out of the way right away. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is not on this list. Despite what was initially planned, the sequel to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will not be coming to theaters in March, or any time in the upcoming year.
However, the loss of one exciting film does not mean 2024 will be short of great animated movies. In its place will be cartoons to meet the needs of every type of moviegoer, from franchise continuations to adaptations of beloved works to new entries. Given the complex nature of animated films, many of these don’t yet have firm release dates.
Still, animations enthusiasts have a lot to look forward to this next year. Here are the big movies you need to watch out for…

The Sony animated films Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse have both received immense praise from audiences and critics. The last film ended on a cliffhanger and promised an epic conclusion to the trilogy, but Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which was supposed to come out this March, was delayed a few months ago. Phil Lord and Chris Miller explained that they delayed the film in order to maintain the same high-quality bar they set with the other movies. Although Lord and Miller are hard at work on the third film, Jake Johnson, who voices Peter Parker, says he’s yet to start recording dialogue for the film, making it seem as though the delay will be longer than expected.

Swinging by the red carpet at the Golden Globes on Sunday, Spider-Verse creative duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller unspooled what fans of the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse trilogy can expect from the final upcoming film titled Beyond the Spider-Verse.
“It will be a very satisfying conclusion,” Lord told Deadline. “It goes even more emotionally deep into the relationships between Miles, Gwen, Peter B., [and Miles’] parents.”
Across the Spider-Verse centers on continuing the exploits of Miles Morales as Brooklyn’s own Spider-Man. Reunited with Gwen Stacy, he is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People — from Lego Spider-Man and Mumbattan’s Pavitr Prabhakar to the Daniel Kaluuya-voiced Spider-Punk — charged with protecting its existence. But the heroes clash on handling a new threat, the Spot, and Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spideys and must redefine what it means to be a hero to save the people he loves most.

According to the current combined predictions of Gold Derby users, the 10 films that are expected to reap Best Picture nominations at this year’s Oscars are “American Fiction,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” “Past Lives,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest.” However there is a movie currently sitting not far behind in 17th place that I think deserves a spot: “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”

Exclusive: Sony Pictures Animation is in development on a new fantasy-adventure feature from Matt Braly, the creator of Disney’s multiple Emmy-nominated animated series, Amphibia.
Braly comes to the as-yet-untitled project after working for the studio as a storyboard artist on The Mitchells vs the Machines, the Academy Award-nominated feature produced by Lord Miller, which was released on Netflix in 2021.
Drawing on his own cultural background and personal history, the film tells the story of a young boy who goes on an emotional journey to a fantastical world of Thai spirits where he hopes to have his illness cured. Rumors about Sony and Marvel‘s Spider-Man 4 continue to swirl, with more whispers caught in the wall-crawler’s web daily. Today, we’re hearing that Cabin in the Woods and Bad Times at the El Royale director Drew Goddard is the top pick to replace Jon Watts if he chooses not to return to the superhero franchise. Word about the studios eyeing Goddard for the gig comes from industry insider Daniel Richtman, whose track record for leaking news is often on point.

Taste is subjective, but you'd be hard-pressed to find someone (who isn't just a frothing racist) who didn't enjoy "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse." The third highest-grossing film of the year domestically, "Across the Spider-Verse," is a visual feast for the eyes and a striking follow-up to the equally adored "Into the Spider-Verse." Serving as the second installment of Miles Morales' arc as Spider-Man, the animated feature is a high-octane adventure with multiverse traveling, alternate timelines, and earth-shattering conflicts. It is, as prolific filmmaker Christopher Miller said during a press conference I recently attended, "the largest and most ambitious animated movie ever made." And he's right.
Trying to comprehend just how much went into crafting "Across the Spider-Verse" is enough to make your brain short-circuit and make the Windows shutdown noise, but it truly is an animated epic. So it's no surprise that Miller and his creative partner Phil Lord were...

Netflix reportedly paid more than $1 billion for the right to stream all the new Sony movies from 2022-26. And so far, it looks like Netflix overpaid by a mile. We’ll detail the lackluster output in a moment, but first, let’s focus on the next Sony bomb on its way. Behold the trailer for “Madame Web.”
Yes, this actually includes a real human saying, “He was in the Amazon with my Mom when she was researching spiders right before she died.”
On your internet forum of choice, you’ll find unanimous scorn about this trailer. It’s a level of mockery we haven’t seen since the trailers for “Cats” or the terrifying first version of the “Sonic the Hedgehog” teaser. In an era of overwhelming superhero fatigue, “Madame Web” almost looks like it was made to out-flop “The Flash.”

There are more Spider-Man movies than you think, and most of them might take place in the same universe.
Mass audiences may see a certain string of high-profile, well-moneyed, live-action Spider-Man films -- that is, the ones released from 2002 until 2022 -- as the only "official" ones, largely because of how much media exposure they got. In that span, there were five separate notable Spider-Man continuities, but those continuities became a little bit chummy as time passed. Eventually, at least three of those continuities would cross over with one another. These kinds of crossovers, however, are easy for Spider-Man fans to accept, as parallel universes have been a common feature in Spider-Man comics going back many decades.
Also, Spider-Man appeared in so many animated shows and movies over the years that it took no major mental calisthenics to imagine each version existing in its own world. Spider-Man gets rebooted all the time,...

The strike may be over and actors are rapidly aiming to return to production, but Disney has still delayed the releases of its MCU titles intended for next year. As it stands, “Deadpool 3” is currently the only Marvel movie slated to open in 2024.
“Captain America: Brave New World,” and “Thunderbolts,” both intended for a release in 2024, will now open in 2025. “Blade,” meant to open early in 2025, now won’t hit theaters until November of that year. Barry Jenkins’ “Mufasa: The Lion King” has also been delayed on Disney’s theatrical release slate.
While “Deadpool 3’s” release date was widely assumed to have already moved, Disney has now made it official, currently leaving the first weekend of the summer wide open on the theatrical calendar. It now opens July 26, 2024.

The Screen Actors Guild reached a tentative agreement with studios on Wednesday, meaning it’s not too late to get some scripted TV back on the air this season.
At long last, the devastatingly clever picket signs can be packed away. The Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) has tentatively agreed to a new three-year contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) — which represents major Hollywood studios — that will get actors back to work, settling a strike that lasted well over 100 days.
Ahead of this week’s deal, studios warned that time was running out to get started on even limited seasons of scripted TV. The summer release schedule has also been threatened, and now the scramble begins to ensure studios have something to put in theaters. Peacock could be one of the first streamers to put out new episodes this winter,...

The highly anticipated third installment in the Venom superhero franchise will no longer be hitting the big screen next summer.
The untitled Sony and Marvel film was initially set to be released in theaters July 12, 2024, but has been pushed back to Nov. 8, 2024, Sony announced Wednesday night.
The shift came just hours after SAG-AFTRA and studios and streamers reached a tentative deal over a new three-year contract following the 118-day actors strike.
Production had begun on the Venom sequel in late June in Spain, but it was among films that were halted the following month due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, which started July 14. Pushing the release date to November and giving the film more time to finish shooting and complete postproduction work provides a certain amount of cushion. Also, Sony has secured a berth in Imax and premium-format screens.
In the third installment of the series, Tom Hardy returns as the lethal protector Venom.
