- Manhattan is the latest branch of a bank to receive the calling card of the Architect, a master robber who got away with three earlier, similarly bloodless hold-ups. Peter sort of clears himself and gets jailed Neal his ankle device parole back, but on a trial basis for both of them. Neal proves the security insufficient and works out the likely identity of the Architect, squeaky clean but bored and arrogant wall Street mogul Edward Walker. Catching him proves harder, his easily seduced secretary and an inside accomplice the keys. Meanwhile Mozzie helps Burke keep track of Neal's mental recovery and discovers the mysterious music-box's disappearance from evidence.—KGF Vissers
- An elusive master thief has targeted a handful of New York's most prestigious banks, and it's up to Peter and Neal to thwart his next heist. But when alarms sound across the city, it becomes clear our guys are dealing with no ordinary criminal.—USA Publicity
- Open with Agent Peter Burke (Tim DeKay) explaining particulars of the plane explosion to investigators. They ask whether he believed Neal (Matt Bomer) wanted to escape or to kill Kate. Peter admits it's possible someone from Neal's past may have wanted him dead and he thinks Agent Fowler would be a good place to start.
After the meeting, Burke tells Agent Diana Barrington (Marsha Thomason) he is now off suspension. Diana hacked Fowler's computer and found only that he had an important meeting coming up in two months.
Peter meets with Neal in prison and asks about putting back on the ankle bracelet and helping him out with cases. Neal doesn't seem sure about the situation, and tells Peter he has to find out who killed Kate. Mozzie shows up pretending to be Neal's counsel. On his way out Peter tells him to talk some sense into Neal.
Two Months Later
We see Neal pretend he is a new bank employee and sneak his way past the front desk. He snags an employee's key card and gets into the vault. Inside he fills his briefcase with cash, careful to avoid the stacks containing dye packs. He is able to walk out of the bank without issue. Outside Peter and Agent Clinton Jones (Sharif Atkins) are waiting to stop him. Neal is back working with them, this time to prove this particular bank is not secure.
Peter and Neal explain the bank's leadership how easy their facility can be breached. Apparently a thief named "The Architect," who has hit banks in three major cities - has sent them calling cards indicating their branch will be next.
Peter assures the bank's head of security Renee (Francie Swift) they will catch the Architect. When she leaves Neal tells Peter he isn't confident given the thief's talent.
Clearly Neal isn't doing well. His hand is twitching while he does his work.
Peter meets with Mozzie (Willie Garson), who thinks Neal hasn't yet recovered from Kate's death. Mozzie admits Neal thinks whoever killed Kate might want him dead as well.
Cut to Neal and Mozzie poring over files related to Kate and the music box. Neal thinks the person who wanted the box is the person who killed Kate. Mozzie asks about the Architect and Neal shows him the cards.
The next day Neal tells Peter that the Architect is a fan of a particular Russian painter. Neal and Lancing have already narrowed the list of bidder on painting to one name, Edward Walker (Tim Matheson).
Peter and Neal go visit Walker, a hedge fund manager who owns three works by the Russian painter. They ask Walker where he was on a particular day but he refuses to answer without a warrant.
Neal suggests to Peter that adrenaline could be a motive for Walker to rob banks.
Diana comes into Peter's office and tells him Agent Fowler's "mystery meeting" is in three days.
Neal runs into Walker's personal assistant, Whitney (Bonnie Swencionis), at a restaurant and the two have drinks.
Peter tells Elizabeth (Tiffani Thiessen) about Neal's problems.
Neal steals Whitney's smart phone and hands it off to Mozzie, who copies the device's SIM card.
Peter mentions to Elizabeth that just before the plane exploded, Neal almost said something.
Neal sneaks the phone back into Whitney's purse then shows off his ankle bracelet to scare her off. Mozzie walks over with info from Walker's personal calendar, which Whitney keeps. During the previous bank heists, Walker had meetings highlighted in green. Tomorrow his has a meeting at the Manhattan bank marked in green.
Peter is unhappy to learn how Neal got his info, but runs with the location of the bank which will be hit.
Peter, Neal and Renee watch the main branch on video from a van on the street. An alarm goes off and guards find an alarm clock in a safety deposit box registered to Peter Burke. Walker walks by and indicates he is still one step ahead of the FBI.
Following the screw-up, Burke tells Peter that Walker is no longer their investigation. Neal tells Burke that at the hanger he was going to tell him that he no longer wants to run. The two then figure out Walker must have sent cards to the banks in order to get them to update their security and show their hand. Jones calls and has Peter turn on the TV: Bank alarms are going off at different banks all over the city. Peter and Neal realize they must get to Renee, who is now the only person who knows the security codes.
Cut to several men donning masks and grabbing Rene inside the Manhattan branch.
Peter and Neal have Diana get them SWAT back-up and arrive at the bank. Neal wants them to break in and the head to the roof. They encounter one of the bank robbers but manage to chase him off before he can contact the men inside.
Renee is taken to the vault by four men with cases. She lets them inside. Two men begin grabbing cash and two others take Rene out of the vault.
Neal cuts off the bank's lights to create a distraction. Sirens blare in the background and Peter unties Renee. The robbers head out the back. Neal follows but they have disappeared.
Back at the office Walker is waiting to hand them a lawsuit related to harassment and defamation of character. He proudly tells Peter "this Architect, whoever he is, has already won."
Neal and Peter analyze the break-in and initially find nothing. Jones shows up to tell them the bank lost $8.2 million. Based on the number of robbers and cases they saw leave the building, Peter and Neal determine a share of the loot is unaccounted for.
Peter and Neal return to the bank and look in the vault. They ask Renee to look at box 213, which two months ago she rented under the name of a deceased relative. Inside the box they find the missing cash, but at this point Renee pulls a gun on the two men. She claims her motivation was a mediocre pension. Peter and Neal fake an argument before Neal explodes two dye packs in Renee's eyes to incapacitate her.
After Renee rolls over on Walker, Peter and Neal return to his residence and place him in cuffs.
Peter meets with Mozzie and asks him to help keep tabs on Neal in the future.
Mozzie brings Neal more info about the music box. At some point during a recent transfer, it was stolen.
Peter calls Diana about the "mystery meeting." We see her place the music box in a safe.
