Those who have only seen the GREG THE BUNNY show on Fox have no idea how dark and intense Dan Milano's puppet creations can be. The film parodies he did later for the IFC channel are a hundred times funnier and more disturbing than anything FOX could have shown to a general audience.
This episode, THE 13TH STEP, is nominally a parody of the Coen Brothers' BARTON FINK, but it's really an acting triumph for the ape puppet, Warren DeMontague. Warren checks into a cheap hotel in Times Square, finds out his wife has left him, and has a complete nervous breakdown that lasts a full ten minutes. It's not at all funny . . . well, no, parts of it are screamingly funny. But it's also sad, genuinely sad, like watching a real human being live through a breakup. Yet because this is a puppet, with plastic eyes and arms that can't even screw in a light bulb, it somehow seems even sadder, and . . . more real.
This is a strange, disturbing short film. And it's a work of art. You must see it!
