"Abstinence" was the first of only two episodes to feature the character of Greg the Bunny, played by Dan Milano, who also performs Warren. Greg's role was limited due to Milano's desire to focus on one central character/performance and network notes from a presentation pilot that originally focused the show on the Greg-Warren relationship.
Directed by Dan Milano who also played Warren, this episode features shout-outs to many of Milano's friends and obsessions: The "Dungeons & Dragons" game featured components from Milano's own gaming group and was done with the permission of the game's publishers at Wizards of the Coast. It also featured a collection of screen-used stop-motion puppets from "Robot Chicken," bearing the likenesses of the show's creators and writing staff. They can be seen over the Dungeon Master's shoulder. Also featured in this scene are issues of Hugh Sterbakov/Seth Green's comic series, "Freshmen" from Top Cow. And the work of Milano's photographer friend Brian McCarty, who would later go on to shoot an iconic photo of Warren. Also featured at the gaming table is Chris Bergoch, a long-time friend and contributor to the franchise.
