Good laughs overcome corny feelings

When my girlfriend told me that she wanted to watch Mike & Molly with me, I was very apprehensive. Why do I always have to watch these sit-com/rom-com series, I thought to myself?

Well, it turns out that the series isn't half so bad. The pilot is good - I find that we can watch it over and over again and still laugh out loud at the gags and jokes. The production is great, but the acting is more than a little corny. It comes off as far too cheesy to be taken seriously as a classic TV series in my eyes. Much like the comedy of Friends, though, Mike & Molly ends up winning us over with adorable characters and really funny situations.

The First Episode...

Warning: Spoilers
I really liked this episode. The series premiere is what makes or breaks a show. And in this case, it was pretty enjoyable.

In this episode, we meet Molly Flynn, a teacher, who is overweight, and attends Overeaters Anonymous meetings. We also meet Mike Biggs, a police officer, who is also overweight, and attends those same meetings. Mike "shares" at the meeting, and Molly is immediately crushing on him, and invites him to speak at her fourth grade class. We also meet Molly's hilarious Mother, Joyce, and her stoner sister, Victoria.

Best part of the episode: Everything.

Worst part of the episode: Nothing in particular.

Overall, I give this episode a 7 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Great.

Interesting enough

The nice thing about 'Mike and Molly' is in Mellissa McCarthy and Billy Gardell you have to actors who normally would probably be the comic support being the leads, and they spark off of each other very well.

It's a well written pilot, with some good laughs. I wasn't keen on the supporting cast though, I thought their characters seemed rather 2D in comparison.

Although he didn't write it, Mark Roberts is very much from the Chuck Lorre style of sitcom writing, so the script is full of low brow sex related jokes, that cheapen this potentially good show.
