This anime series is set in China in 1931; a time of intrigue when various nations are vying for power in the area and events are happening that will pave the way for the start of the Asian part of the Second World War. As well as an established western presence in Shanghai there is a Japanese presence in China; largely there to protect their railway in Manchuria. Here individuals are planning events that will give the Japanese an excuse to invade and create a puppet state. Against these real events a group of individuals with special powers work for 'Sakurai' a military spy organisation. Over the course of the series they will work to stop various plots… including a plot by a rogue army officer, who is also the brother of one of the group, to create a super-bomb and drop it on Shanghai if the western powers don't leave Asia.

Before watching I didn't know much about this series but thought the setting looked interesting; and it was. While it isn't surprising that it doesn't show any of the atrocities committed by the Japanese in China it is a little surprising that somebody would make a series that featured some distinctly controversial events; most notably the 'Mukden Incident'… a dubious excuse set up to justify the invasion of Manchuria and setting up the puppet state of Manchukuo.

The stories we see are pretty good featuring a nice balance of action and intrigue. The characters, both protagonists and antagonists are fun to watch and fairly distinctive; their superpowers aren't too excessive. The animation is of a high quality and nicely captures the era; this is helped by the fact that Chinese characters actually speak Chinese… how well I can't comment on though! Overall a solid thriller with a superpowers twist that inspired me to read a little about the real events it was based on.
