- As Christmastime is overshadowed by war, the Farnons have taken in a refugee child. Siegfried must choose between the well being of a racehorse and safeguarding Tristan's future. Mrs. Hall also grapples with upsetting news.
- This Christmas will be different at Skeldale House than past Christmases due to the war. James and Tristan are still waiting to hear if they will be called up into military service. They have taken in one of the evacuated children, a Jewish girl named Eva Feldman, who will be experiencing her first ever Christmas, while Mrs. Hall in particular tries to incorporate Eva's Jewish heritage into the household's events this holiday season. In addition, Mrs. Pumphrey tries to instill a little more joy into Eva's existence away from her parents. And there is no planned party at Skeldale this year. In not wanting to lose an opportunity, Mrs. Hall makes a unilateral decision to change the last item upon learning some news straight from the horse's mouth in a realization of some underlying feelings which she has been suppressing. Meanwhile, Siegfried, in treating River who has sustained an injury which may prevent him from running in an upcoming race, learns some news personal to him with regard to Tristan. While animal welfare has always been first and foremost to Siegfried, he may change his philosophy in this one particular instance with River taking into account how it may affect that issue with Tristan.—Huggo
