Great miniseries and probably the best depiction ever of an historical event

I love historical movies and miniseries mostly because they almost always star actors I love, and NUREMBERG is certainly no exception. I saw it one sunday when it was aired like an entire movie on channel 7, and while 4 hours certainly look staggering, the time didn't seem to be that important. And if you ask why, read the following.

The miniseries is about the Nuremberg trials held after World War II ended. In the beginning attorney Robert Jackson (Alec Baldwin) has a meeting with Samuel Rosenman (Max von Sydow) about what he has to do in the trial and soon we see the courtroom cleaned up and then the trial begins, with Herman Goring (Brian Cox), Joachim von Ribbentrop, Fritz Sauckel and Albert Speer interrogated and then incriminated for crimes against humanity.

The production values are great, on par with those of historical movies such as SCHINDLER'S LIST or SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and you can see the effort put behind them. The acting is top-notch: Alec Baldwin, Max von Sydow, Michael Ironside, Christopher Plummer, Matt Craven and Brian Cox give all some of the nicest performances of their careers. And although there are few dead moments, the good outweighted the bad.

Don't ever miss it if you have a chance because of the acting and also because it's the mostly accurate depiction of the Nuremberg trials along with JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBERG.

A fair trial. Not a legal lynching.

Warning: Spoilers
That's what is made clear the trials for crimes against humanity will be with American, British, French and Russian legal experts overseeing the proceedings. While "Judgment at Nuremberg" dealt mainly with the judge's trial (just one of twelve trials) using fictional names of judge's, attorneys, defendents and witnesses, this focuses on the main trial with the main dependents in the final solution, including Speer, Göring, Frank and Frick, and is shown through the eyes of American supreme court justice Robert H. Jackson (Alec Baldwin) who doesn't have a law degree but has studied all his life.

This first part focuses on how the plans for the trial were constructed, the arrest of major players, their reactions to the accusations of such atrocities and the beginning of the trial, leading up to a film that takes place in Dachau. It is presented fairly, showing the regrets of some of the defendents, a suicide attempt of one and the successful suicide of another. A fabulous international cast includes legendary actors Christopher Plummer and Max Von Sydow, with Brian Cox as Goring and Herbert Knaup as Speer, and most memorably Frank Moore as guilt ridden Nazi Hans Frank explaining the two sides of his existence causing great conflict within him. Powerful and riveting. You could watch this and both the TV and big screen versions of "Judgment" back to back and pick up many new details about recent history, and not be bored.
