Young filmmakers to participate in the 5th New Horizons Studio.
A total of 24 young filmmakers from Portugal to Turkey will participate in the fifth edition of New Horizons Studio (July 27-30) held during the 14th international film festival in Wroclaw.
The training programme, which receives support from the EU’s Creative Europe programme, includes workshops on pitching, production, distribution and promotion.
As in past years, the majority of the participants are from Poland with others coming from Portugal, France, Switzerland, Romania and Turkey.
Four of the Polish film-makers attending Studio are also involved in films being presented as part of the Polish Days which kicks off its programme of finished films, works in progress and pitchings on July 30:

Generally, in cinema, there are greater crimes than overreaching. It’s often easy to forgive films that feature failures of execution if the ideas hold up to scrutiny. Unfortunately, Kamen Kalev’s second feature as writer-director, the woefully misguided The Island, is almost an opposite case: it’s an occasionally beautifully-rendered take on some seriously muddled material.
The Island‘s first hour-and-a-bit plays an awful lot like any number of domestic psychodramas. Breaking out around the time where Nyff is on its last legs, Montreal's Festival du nouveau cinéma (October 12 to 23) kicks in with about four times the size in volume, and obviously more of an eclectic range. This year is the festival's big 40 - and for the occasion they've commissioned some of the names who've been a part of the festival to each contribute a short film in the context of what is being called the "Cartes Blanches" series. Denis Côté, Deco Dawson, Sophie Deraspe, Rodrigue Jean, Zacharias Kunuk, Marie Losier, Catherine Martin, Bruce McDonald, Théodore Ushev and Denis Villeneuve will each submit a four minute short. For their opening and closing festival items they've got the distinction of showing off Foreign Film Oscar selected items in Philippe Falardeau's Monsieur Lazhar and selected as the opener well before it was announced as France's submission for Oscar is Declaration of War by Valérie Donzelli.

Opening and closing
The 40th edition of the Fnc kicks off on Wednesday, October 12, with Declaration of War by Valérie Donzelli (France) at Cinéma Impérial (Centre Sandra & Leo Kolber, Salle Lucie & André Chagnon). This critically-acclaimed second feature by Valérie Donzelli (The Queen of Hearts) tells the love story of Roméo and Juliette who are battling to save their sick child. The director and her producer Edouard Weil will be in attendance.

Montreal’s Festival du nouveau cinéma has announced their line up for the films competing for the Louve d’Or, a prize of $15 000 awarded to the best film. This marks the festivals 40th year and once again the line up is stellar. If you are not familiar with the festival than now is the time to do so. I honestly think it is the best film festival I have ever been to. While Fantasia may be the most fun, the Fnc not only picks the best of Venice, Cannes and Tiff, but they don’t focus on red carpets, celebrities, nor do they overcharge for tickets. Its classy, laid back and more importantly, all about the movies. Here is the first wave of films announced.

To follow up on yesterday's roundup of Un Certain Regard remainders...
"The Tati-inspired dance trio of Dominique Abel, Fiona Gordon, and Bruno Romy are at it again, crafting an awfully similar follow-up to their previous feature, Rumba." Blake Williams for Ioncinema: "The Fairy is light on magic and the supernatural, but flutters breezily along with joke-a-minute fluff…. As in their other films, the 'plot' — this one involving a wish-granting fairy — is only really a conceit by which to give the illusion of continuity to what is essentially a string of short films." Screen's Fionnuala Halligan's enjoyed it, though: "Theirs is an old-fashioned, almost silent, routine (their first feature L'Iceberg was virtually wordless) blended beautifully with an arresting dance element." Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. One of the biggest announcements this week at Cannes was the news of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Dune, a documentary on the Chilean filmmaker’s attempt to adapt Frank Herbert‘s novel in the mid-’70s. Twitch recently premiered an exclusive video clip from the upcoming production detailing just how insanely ambitious the project was. Fans of the legendary filmmaker would all agree that if he had completed the project, it would strongly stand a chance of being one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made. I guess we’ll never know. It was announced today that L.A. based Snowfort Pictures, Camera One of France and Koch Media of Germany have begun production on Frank Pavich’s sci-fi documentary Jodorowsky’S Dune. Shooting has wrapped in France, Switzerland and the U.K. with filming to continue this summer in the United States.

On the surface, Kamen Kalev's sophomore effort The Island sounds like a tame tale of a vacation gone slightly off kilter. Sophie and Daneel are 30-something Parisians in need of a break so Sophie books the couple a trip to Bulgaria. At first, Daneel is reluctant to go but after exerting a little pressure, Sophie convinces him to take the trip and two head off for a refreshing getaway but the trip turns out to be more than either of them bargained for.
Shortly upon arriving, Daneel reveals that the was born in Bulgaria and raised in a nearby orphanage. He then leads Sophie to a near abandoned island on the Black Sea and between the heat and the strange inhabitants, the two start seeing and experiencing things that don't appear to have a rational explanation.
It's not clear from the trailer but there is also a suggestion that...

The final Cannes sidebar of new feature films to unveil its lineup, the Directors' Fortnight (Quinzaine des Réalisateurs), announced 25 features this morning - 21 competing, and 4 special screenings. This year's edition is especially heavy on European films, which take up a whopping 17 of the 21 competing slots. Just like the Critic's Week selection, we've got a majority of debut films and films by little known directors, but also a handful of names that most cinephiles will already be familiar with. This is, of course, part of the pleasure of discovery in these sections: the ability to be taken completely by surprise (ie. last year's Two Gates of Sleep and Le Quattro Volte) that you don't get with finding a masterpiece in the Competition. The lineup for the Cannes film festival has been finalized with the announcement of the Directors’ Fortnight lineup, which includes Guilty of Romance by one of my personal favourite directors, Sion Sono. The Directors’ Fortnight is an independent section held in parallel to the Cannes Film Festival. The section was created in 1969 after the events of May 1968, in which the Cannes festival was canceled in solidarity with striking workers.
The Directors’ Fortnight showcases a programme of shorts and feature films as well as documentaries from all over the world.

An Indo-France co-production, Chhatrak (Mushrooms) directed by Sri Lankan filmmaker Vimukthi Jayasundara is a part of the official lineup of Cannes Directors Fortnight.
Co-produced by Bappaditya Bandopadhyay from India, Mushrooms is Vimukthi Jayasundara’s third feature film. His debut film The Forsaken Land had won the Camera d’Or for best debut feature at Cannes in 2005.

Linda Cardellini plays a soldier who returns home from a tour of duty and has trouble adjusting in artist-turned-director Liza Johnson’s debut feature Return. The Berlin Film Festival begins today and in typical Ioncinema.com fashion, I've decided to unveil my predictions for the 2011 edition of the Cannes Film Festival. I've taken the liberty at breaking down the predictions by what should logically fit into what sections: Main Comp, Ucr and the Director's Fortnight sidebar. In the Main Competition category, we should see an increase in the number of titles selected (perhaps hovering around the twenty mark. We can cross out films such as Haneke's latest, Kamen Kalev's The Island, Raymond Depardon's Journal de France, Andrei Zvyagintsev's (2007's Banishment) latest and I wouldn't be surprised if Walter Salles' On the Road isn't completed on time -- and in what should be a vintage year for the festival, these no-shows won't matter.
