Midsomer Murders (TV Series)
The Noble Art (2010)
John Nettles: DCI Tom Barnaby
Quotes
-
Joyce Barnaby : Iris Holman is in love with Giles Braithwaite.
DCI Tom Barnaby : How do you know that?
Joyce Barnaby : Oh, you'd have to be blind not to see it. Or a man.
-
[Jones is hammering the knocker on a door]
DCI Tom Barnaby : I think you should apply more force.
DS Ben Jones : I'm knocking as hard as I can, sir.
DCI Tom Barnaby : Kick the door down.
DS Ben Jones : Oh!
-
DCI Tom Barnaby : Iris Holman was blackmailing you! Wasn't she?
Gerald Farquaharson : She held the document that legalised the wager. She was asking for money. But what she really wanted was revenge.
DCI Tom Barnaby : On Sebastian?
Gerald Farquaharson : On the world...
DCI Tom Barnaby : You know it doesn't matter that Frank Bishop is dead. The manor still goes into his estate.
Gerald Farquaharson : That is
[laughs]
Gerald Farquaharson : That is the irony of it. You see, Frank Bishop was so determined that his man would win that he did a bit of pre-fight tampering. Kinsella didn't know. But he was told this morning he had failed a drugs test.
DS Ben Jones : He'll be stripped of the title.
Gerald Farquaharson : And the wager is void and the estate is still mine.
DS Ben Jones : So no need for all those murders.
Gerald Farquaharson : None at all, Sergeant. What a waste. What a pitiful waste. Although, when you think of it, Braithwaite, a two-timing lawyer, Frank Bishop, a ruthless main chancer, Iris Holman, an embittered blackmailer. And what am I? Other than a gentrified waster? None of us will be much of a loss to society.

[last lines]
DS Ben Jones : He got his son's wife pregnant, and gambled away his family fortune, and people like him.
DCI Tom Barnaby : I certainly did.
DS Ben Jones : Yeah. You did screw up, didn't you, sir?
DCI Tom Barnaby : Yes. Killed three people; carried out those murders meticulously, clinically, right under my nose. What kind of a man does that?
DS Ben Jones : J.P. A pillar of the community...
DCI Tom Barnaby : ...And certainly not one of us at all.
