what is Tarkovsky's River
gillianmci19 December 2011
HISTORY / CAMERA / MEMORY: NOTES ON TARKOVSKY'S RIVER Tarkovsky's River is a journey on a real river, to a real place. But it's also a journey through light and time, mediated by the ability or inability to capture images, or to make sense of the images that have been captured. It is a meditation on history, and on Tarkovsky's sense of history seen through his films. It is a meditation on memory and what it means to remember, where memories come from and what they become.

The film combines two aesthetics, still images created according to principles of colour, light and composition; classical and timeless. And a kind of video diary: urgent, often uncomposed, eagerly capturing what is there without contemplation.
