Seems good so far, but TERRIBLE audio mix

Seems good so far, but TERRIBLE audio mix. You can barely hear over the music they put over it.

Too hard to hear

Good show, bit when music plays you can't hear anything they are saying. You either miss what's being said or have to constantly play with the volume. Totally took away from the show.

Classic Ramsay

Warning: Spoilers
Watching Gordon Ramsay is always a treat for me. Between his superior skill in cooking and judging, paired with his foul mouth and accent, he truly is an interesting man.

Best Restaurant is no exception to this.

As he tests two restaurants of the same style against each other, as usual the fun comes in the cooking. Here's a brief order of operations per episode: Meet and great with restaurant owners/chefs and taste their food.

Pressure test them with his 30 diners all at once.

Meet them for review after surprise mystery diner visit.

Restaurants battle in the kitchen before overall judgment.

Winner is chosen, moves on to finals.

As I've seen many of Ramsay's shows, sometimes things begin to feel similar. And although this falls into that category, it's still a great "zone-out" kind of watch, as you can put it on and just watch mindlessly with a friend.

I really enjoyed watching this series, audio mix was awful though. Impossible to understand the speaker over the music in some parts, Watch with subtitles.

Switch on the subtitles

It starts in the first episode, onwards. When Ramsay does a narrative voice-over, the music basically drowns him out. You only hear him clearly when he's actually seen on the screen talking to the restaurant staff or directly to the camera.

It's irritating! His shows are usually well produced; so I don't know how this was allowed to happen. Having said that the idea of competing restaurants is a good idea, and it exposes the viewer to a wide variety of food from different cultures and how extremely difficult it is to cook for 30 people.

If I could hear it clearly, I'd give it a higher score of an 8; as is, it gets a 6.

PS: in the second episode one of the females appears to have bruised arms. Which has raised concerns on social media that she may have been abused.

Blah blah blah blah

The sound guy should have been sacked. The ruination of a good meal is a bad sauce. The bad sauce in this instance is the sound. I wish I could have made it to dessert! I'm glad there are other things on the menu to try!

Horrid audio mix
sebring-926281 March 2024
Many others have written about this in reviews here. The audio mix is awful.

Many shows today STILL (I remember my Dad complaining about this 60 years ago!) have the MUSIC/SOUNDTRACK much too loud in relation to the verbiage.

They've never figured out that we don't want the soundtrack blowing us out of our chairs, while we have to raise the volume so high so that we can hear the speaking.

This show was the worst (for that) ever. The soundtrack is SO LOUD, CONSTANT and PERVASIVE that it not only drowned out a lot of the speaking, it's just plain irritating.

So after 60+ years, and all the tech we have - we've gotten absolutely no better at mixing this stuff.

Another issue is that around E8 Ramsay started calling restaurants and eliminating them over the phone, but there was no explanation as to why. Then I read that the original show was 12 episodes, but they aired only 9 episodes. So perhaps they skipped over the episodes where some of the semi-finalists eliminated. It detracts from the show when out of nowhere, suddenly there are eliminations without the benefit of seeing/hearing/knowing why.

The show itself was pretty good. Too bad they spoiled it with their sound issues and eliminating some episodes.
