Nicola Coughlan said she would spontaneously burst into tears while balancing filming schedules for Bridgerton and Big Mood.
“I’d film one show during the week, the other on the weekend,” Coughlan told AP Entertainment. Coughlan stars as Penelope Bridgerton in season three of Netflix’s Bridgerton, out next month, and as Maggie in the UK’s Channel 4 comedy Big Mood, released in March.
“I remember that I was so tired, I would just start crying randomly,” Coughlan said of balancing both projects at once. “And I would I would be saying, ‘There’s nothing actually wrong with me. I am just very tired.’ I had to learn my Big Mood script on the Bridgerton set.”
The Derry Girls star said the back-and-forth was made more difficult because the two shows are very different. “Big Mood has quite naturalistic dialogue,” she explained. “Bridgerton is very stylized. We’d film...

Five upcoming Spanish TV fiction projects, involving top local production and distribution companies, feature in Coming Next from Spain, a showcase of series unspooling March 19 at Series Mania.
Atresmedia TV’s “Sanctuary,” Movistar+ Plus’ “Fine Arts,” Filmax’s “Dating in Barcelona” Season 2, The Good Mood-Mediawan’s “The Other Life” and Onza Distribution’s “Heartless” will be presented at the event, proving once more that Spanish fiction production is in good health.
Six years after high-end Spanish TV series lifted off on the global market, championed by hit series such as “Money Heist” and “Elite,” Spain has become one of the steadiest suppliers for worldwide platforms.
The successful trend continues as of today, with Mediaset España and Alea Media series “Wrong Side of the Tracks,” whose Seasons 1, 2 and 3 have reached the top 10 of most watched non -English TV fiction shows on Netflix for the period March 4-10, 2024, cumming 41.6 million hours viewed.

British creative Nicôle Lecky has said the streamers didn’t understand the nuances behind her BAFTA-winning BBC drama Mood when she was pitching the show.
Lecky, who is working on another untitled BBC series, said “there was a push to nail [Mood] as one thing” when she was speaking with the SVoDs, whereas she praised the nation’s public broadcaster for understanding the specificities behind Mood.
The BAFTA-winning musical drama aired nearly two years ago and was based on Lecky’s one-woman play Superhoe. It garnered strong reviews from critics for its originality and understanding of social media culture, beating This is Going to Hurt to the coveted Best Mini-Series BAFTA last year.
“The streamers wanted to say, ‘This is about one thing and we can market it to a very specific audience’,” Lecky told today’s Outside the Box event in London. “In doing that, the nuance and specificity was...

To celebrate the release of How To Have Sex, which opens in UK cinemas next month, we had the pleasure of chatting with the cast and writer/director to find out more.
Three British teenage girls go on a rites-of-passage holiday, drinking, clubbing, and hooking up in what should be the best summer of their lives. As they dance their way across the sun-drenched streets of Malia, they find themselves navigating the complexities of sex, consent, and self-discovery. Captured with luminous visuals and a pitch-perfect soundtrack, Manning Walker’s directorial debut paints a painfully familiar portrait of young adulthood, and how first sexual experiences should – or shouldn’t – play out. How To Have Sex stars Screen Stars of Tomorrow 2023 Mia McKenna-Bruce and BAFTA-nominated Samuel Bottomley, alongside Lara Peake, Shaun Thomas, and newcomers Enva Lewis and Laura Ambler.

BAFTA has shaken up major categories and rung in some eligibility changes as entries open for the 2024 TV awards.
Limited drama is a new category for scripted one-off programs or series that tell a complete story over 1-19 episodes, replacing separate categories for single drama and mini-series. “The introduction of limited drama maintains the opportunity for single self-contained films to be eligible following a decline in entries to the single drama category in recent years,” BAFTA said.
To put this in perspective, at the 2023 awards, “I Am Ruth,” starring Kate Winslet, won the single drama category, while Nicôle Lecky’s “Mood” won the best mini-series category. In 2024, there will only be one winner, under the new limited drama category. The drama series category remains unchanged.
The changes were flagged earlier by BAFTA. As set out in the 2023 rulebook, categories with under 20 entries will see three, rather than the standard four nominations announced,...

Rap legend Shaggy has hit out at the bizarre rumours that he mixes marijuana in his tea, and chain smokes weed, calling it fabricated nonsense. The 54-year-old rapper says he rarely ever touches the drug and insists that the suggestion he drinks it in his tea is utterly “bogus”, reports mirror.co.uk.
Shaggy, whose hits include the smash singles, ‘Angel’, ‘It Wasn’t Me’ and ‘Boombastic’, has said that while he does go out for ‘the occasional puff’ with friends, he largely stays clear of the substance, so chain smoking weed is out of the question.
Talking about his interest in marijuana, he said: “I never said I put it in my tea. I don’t drink weed in my tea. I don’t even smoke it.”
“I might have an occasional puff here and there in a social environment with my friends but nothing of that nature. I...

“Silk” screenwriter Peter Moffat is adapting Jonathan Freedland’s non-fiction book “The Escape Artist,” which tells the true story of two Jews who escaped from Auschwitz.
Margery Bone’s Bonafide Films has secured the rights to Freedland’s book, which is set to be made into a high-end limited series. Bonafide, who have a development and distribution deal with BBC Studios, recently produced Nicôle Lecky’s BAFTA-winning “Mood.”
“The Escape Artist” centers around nineteen-year-old Rudolf Vrba, a Slovakian Jew who manages to escape Auschwitz alongside fellow internee Fred Wetzler, and warn the world about what was happening. Their actions saved the lives of at least 200,000 Jews who were facing immediate deportation from Budapest to the world’s most notorious death camp.
“This is a story of how human beings can be pushed to the outer limits, and yet still somehow endure,” said Freeland. “How the actions of one individual, even a teenage boy,...

It was a big night for Irish talent at this year’s British version of the Emmys, the BAFTA TV Awards, which were doled out at the Royal Festival Hall in London. BBC Three breakout Mood pulled off a surprise at the BAFTA TV Awards this afternoon, beating Ben Whishaw-starrer This is Going to Hurt to the Best Mini-Series gong.
Nicôle Lecky’s musical drama also beat ITV double The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe and A Spy Among Friends to the prize.
In Mood, Lecky plays Sasha, a budding singer trying to make it with the odds stacked against her. Featuring musical performances in each episode, it was based on her one-woman play, Superhoe, and garnered critical acclaim.
Jason Isaacs and Doctor Who actor Freema Agyeman presented the award at the BAFTAs this afternoon.
In an emotional acceptance speech, creator Lecky dedicated the win to her mum, who passed away recently.
“I want to inspire the next generation of storytellers,” she added. “Even if you go through dark times, there is always light to come out of it so thank you so much.

The British version of the Emmys is set for Sunday, May 14 with the main ceremony of the BAFTAs taking place in London. While these awards aren’t exactly a, uh, crystal clear crystal ball for the Emmys, they can give some insight into which British shows may make the successful trip across the Atlantic. At the same time, it also gives an insight into which American shows are proving to be the Brits’ particular, uh, cup of tea.
This year’s BAFTA ceremony will take at the Royal Festival Hall and will be hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan. Two shows lead the way in nominations this year, with Ben Whishaw‘s “This is Going to Hurt” and Martin Freeman‘s “The Responder” each receiving six nominations.
Like the Emmys, the BAFTAs split their TV awards into two parts — the main ceremony and an earlier celebration devoted to celebrating the creative arts.

Kate Winslet and Kit Connor took the top acting prizes at the U.K.’s Royal Television Society Programme Awards on Tuesday.
Winslet won leading actor, female, for Channel 4’s “I am Ruth.” Winslet won for playing Ruth, who witnesses her teenage daughter Freya (Winslet’s real-life daughter Mia Threapleton) retreating into herself as she becomes consumed by the pressures of social media.
Winslet made a powerful speech, saying: “It has never been a harder time to be a parent, it has never been a more dangerous time to be a child in an online world. So let’s hope that the next Online Safety Bill implements significant and seismic change that will fundamentally help towards securing the safety of all of our children by recognizing and criminalizing harmful content.”

The 25th Scad Savannah Film Festival Presents Wonder Women: Producers (the Christine Vachon Edition)
Moderated by Darrien Gipson, Executive Director of SAGindie, this year’s Wonder Women: Producers discussion at the Scad Savannah Film Festival was a must-catch, mostly for two glaringly obvious reasons, with the first being the wide diversity of the participants. Alongside white Brits Alison Owen and manager/producer Laura Berwick, there was the English-Jamaican writer/actress/producer Nicôle Lecky and American actress/producer Jurnee Smollett. Then there was the second reason—the presence of “grande dame” of indie […]

It might be tempting to dismiss passionate singer Sasha (creator Nicôle Lecky) as she spirals out of control and leaves her family, ex-boyfriend, and home in the dust. Tempestuous and desperate to become famous enough to achieve her dreams, Sasha is introduced to her audience in flashes of messy nights out, blurry memories of bad decisions past, careening camera angles and sporadic song breaks as her imagination runs wild and reveals glimpses into her psyche.
As based on Lecky’s 2019 monologue “Superhoe” (a great title sadly lost in translation) and directed by Stroma Cairns and Dawn Shadforth, “Mood” appears to tell the story of a woman determined to burn her life to the ground. Instead, the BBC show (premiering Nov. 6 on BBC America and AMC+) becomes something else — and then something else, and something else, and something else. One after the other, Lecky’s shrewd scripts peel off layers of...

The musical drama Mood arrives on BBC America having followed a one-woman-show-to-tv-series pipeline similar to the one that previously yielded Chewing Gum and Fleabag.
Does that mean Mood creator/star Nicôle Lecky is the next Michaela Coel or Phoebe Waller-Bridge? That’s a high and fairly unreasonable bar to expect any relative newcomer to reach, but based on this series, it’s obvious that Lecky is a charismatic and versatile performer with a distinctive writing voice and some provocative, if maybe not revelatory, things on her mind.
At only six episodes of 45-ish minutes apiece, Mood is worth watching as Lecky’s breakout, regardless of whether or not she follows in the sprawling footsteps of those recent generational talents.
Lecky plays Sasha, a largely directionless 20-something living with her mom (Jessica Hynes), stepdad (Paul Kaye) and bratty teenage half-sister (Mia Jenkins) in East London.

BBC America paid its final respects to “Killing Eve” in April; now, “Doctor Who” is (time-) traveling away to Disney+. Guess what BBC America’s top two shows were?
The extremely long-running British series will now stream on Disney+ outside of the UK and Ireland. While we’re about a year out from that deal’s debut, the “intention” is for “Doctor Who” on Disney+ to stream the same day episodes air on Britain’s BBC One, a person with knowledge of the plans told IndieWire. For the next few years, BBC America, a joint venture between AMC Networks and BBC Studios, will continue to have the linear license for several prior seasons of “Doctor Who.” The limited catalogue will include all of the Jodie Whittaker seasons and a dozen specials.
Disney’s “Doctor Who” deal follows a somewhat similar platform change for “Dancing With the Stars,” which is produced...

"If you died tomorrow, I don't think I'd cry, I gave you one too many nights," sings Jessie Reyez in "Mutual Friends," a single off her new album, "Yessie," released on Sept. 16. Brimmed with much of the gritty and raw R&b and soul sounds Reyez is known for, the 11-track album is her second studio album and fourth project. In "Yessie," the Grammy-nominated performer mesmerizes with her unique, raspy voice while offering fresh sounds, hopeful lyrics, and dance vibes.
"I'm always just talking about my life and what I go through, but I'm definitely in a different space."
These expressions of joy amid heart-wrenching tracks reflect the journey Reyez has undertaken in her own personal life. "I'm always just talking about my life and what I go through, but I'm definitely in a different space," Reyez says in an interview with Popsugar. "I've just wanted to grow,...
