If you didn’t get your stop-motion fix last Friday night at the Ray Harryhausen Tribute, you’ll have a chance this weekend to take in the astonishing 9-minute horror short Abyssus Abyssum Invocat when it plays here as part of the St. Louis International film festival.
Abyssus Abyssum Invocat is a Latin phrase that means ‘Deep thinking leads to deep understanding’, though the filmmakers note that it can mean ‘Two wrongs don’t make a right’. Whatever the translation, the film is clearly inspired by Czech animator Jan Švankmajer, the American Brothers Quay, and Russian animator Wladyslaw Starewicz by way of David Lynch and the Saw franchise. Abyssus Abyssum Invocat utilizes stop-motion animation and live-action puppetry to create a darkly comic meditation on capital punishment and religion. I’ve seen Abyssus Abyssum Invocat and it’s a haunting trip. The animation isn’t particularly smooth but that crudeness works in the film’s favor,...

Love Stalker was originally reviewed during the St. Louis Filmmaker.s Showcase.
Pete, the main character in Love Stalker, a terrific new comedy about a young St. Louis dude cruising for his 75th sexual conquest (it’s his Golden number he explains), does a lot of things you’d expect from a guy whose life revolves around getting laid. As played by Matt Glasson, he jostles and swaggers, hangs out at bars drinking bourbon, and approaches every woman with a lame pick-up line, some which actually work. At home he sleeps on leopard-print sheets in matching underpants but his apartment is otherwise mostly barren because he’s a player, and players don’t stay home much. The self-aggrandizing Pete’s not quite the chick magnet he thinks he is but, despite his obvious sleaze, manages to score plenty just because he works so darn hard at it. Tony (Darek Russell...

Cinema St. Louis, our city’s non-profit cinema-related event planning group, will presenting its 11th annual St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase which begins this Saturday, August 13th at the Tivoli Theater (and ends with a party on the 18th at Blueberry Hill). The showcase, sponsored by Stella Artois Beer, is a chance for St. Louis-based filmmakers to show off their art. All of these films were written, directed, edited or produced by St. Louis natives or those with strong local ties. The 16 film programs that screen at the Tivoli from Aug. 14-18 serve as St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase.s centerpiece. The programs range from full-length fiction features and documentaries to multi-film compilations of fiction and documentary shorts. Many programs include post-screening Q&As with filmmakers. So, here we are guys… the first episode of Film Fiend to stream on Wamg. For those of you that don’t know… I, your fellow Movie Geek Melissa, co-host a local St. Louis television show about films with independent filmmaker Gary C. Warren. Wamg’s own Tom Stockman makes an appearance on this episode. If you are in the St. Louis area, you can catch Film Fiend every Sunday morning at 10:30am on channel MY46.
In the 3rd segment, you can catch my interview, via satellite, with Elizabeth Banks about her film The Next Three Days. The show is getting way better, since I was really nervous to be on film. Each episode gets better, so stick with me here! In the first segment from the 6th episode of Film Fiend, Gary and Melissa introduce the show and Gary sits down with Tom Stockman to discuss the upcoming Super 8 Movie Madness.

Love Stalker, an independent unromantic comedy film, set and shot in South City, St. Louis is releasing their first trailer for the film on their website at www.lovestalker.com.
Love Stalker is an edgy indie "unromantic comedy" co-written, co-produced and co-directed by Matt Glasson & B. Bowls MacLean. It is the story of a 30-something bar-hopping player named Pete (writer/director Glasson) who lives to “play the game” and bed as many women as possible to reach his "golden number." Things change...
