Canuel's resume includes bi-lingual buddy action film Bon Cop, Bad Cop and television series such as Flashpoint, Bullet in the Face and Transporter: The Series. Welcome back to This Week In Discs! If you see something you like, click on the title to buy it from Amazon. Captain Phillips Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks) knows his job captaining freighters through dangerous waters is a risky endeavor, but the pay is well worth the very slight possibility of pirates. At least it was before pirates board and take control of the ship. From that point on Phillips finds himself struggling to keep himself and the crew alive. Director Paul Greengrass‘ latest film is based on a true story, but even if you know the outcome it remains a suspenseful and exciting adventure. Acting is strong across the board (and on-board), but the highlight is Hanks delivering the most authentic and affecting five minutes of the past several years. You’ll know it when you see it, and your eyes will wet themselves. [Blu-ray/DVD extras: Commentary, making of] Bullet in the Face: The Complete Series Pitch: ”From The...

Admittedly, the first time I sat down to watch Bullet in the Face when it made its TV debut, I didn’t make it all the way through. In fact, I shut it off 10 minutes into the pilot. Besides a few well-delivered lines by Eddie Izzard, the sense of humor didn’t appeal to me. For the most part, it still doesn’t, but it is easier to appreciate when you go in knowing it was made by Alan Spencer, the same guy who brought us the mock cop series Sledge Hammer, and thus know to expect the show to be a very broad satirical look at whatever genre it’s playing about in. With that in mind, Bullet in the Face becomes amusing for those who enjoy genre studies taken to an extreme, but outside of that very small niche audience, Bullet in the Face is likely to be...

A few weeks after American and Dutch researchers found that violence in PG-13 films has now exceeded R-rated levels, the Parents Television Council has come up with a violence scorecard for broadcast vs cable. In a new study (read it: here), the PTC says, “The volume and degree of violent content shown on broadcast and cable television are virtually indistinguishable,” and that broadcast TV shows “consistently underrated graphically-violent content as appropriate for 14-year-old children, even though similar content on the cable networks was rated for mature audiences only.” The PTC is especially concerned with NBC’s Revolution, which, it says, contained an average 91.5 acts of violence per episode over four installments considered. Related: Gun Violence In U.S. Movies On The Rise; PG-13 Levels Exceed R-Rated Films: Study Among cable shows included in the study were American Horror Story, The Walking Dead, Sons Of Anarchy, Breaking Bad, Copper, Justified, and Bullet In The Face.

On the Haven Season 3 finale, it looked as though we may never see Jordan McKee again... but Surprise and Spoiler Alert: Jordan is very much alive and well, as viewers will learn on the September 13 return of this Syfy favorite.

In an exclusive chat with the star, Kelton told me about when she found out she’d be returning to the series, what we can expect in the romance department for Jordan and how McKee really feels about Audrey. Scroll down for excerpts from our Q&A...

Sbs is relaunching Sbs 2 in April as a youth-oriented, multi-platform channel.
It is the first rebrand since the channel (then called Sbs Two) was launched in June 2009. Working under severe budget-constraints, it broadcast (and re-broadcast) a similar mix of main channel content including world film, drama, documentaries, international news and sport. However, Sbs finally received a major funding boost from the government in 2012 allowing chief executive Michael Ebeid to begin a process to revitalise the public broadcaster..
Sbs 2 now plans to focus on audiences aged 16-39 with a passion for emerging cultural ideas and experiences. Its content will include the channel.s first commissioned program - a 15-minute daily news and current affairs program - and dedicated sport programming.
It will also launch "Back 2 Back" episode viewing - where viewers get to watch an entire series of selected new programs via Sbs On Demand before broadcast on Sbs 2.

You can conclude a lot about the mood of a commercial network by how it stages its upfronts presentation.
My abiding memory of Ten’s event last year was watching them handing out portable televisions from the back of a lorry. In the style of an episode of Oprah, everybody who attended got one as they left.
Watching drunk media types wandering into the darkness of Sydney’s Hickson Road with electrical goods tucked under their arms, the image that popped into my mind was of the looters at the London riots a week before.
This year’s event from Ten was a less over-the-top, slightly more considered breakfast affair.
Meanwhile Seven’s was the over-the-top one this year – complete with indoor fireworks.
Nine had a small event this week around its in-house branded entertainment and integration operation Powered. But its main TV season preview is still a few weeks away.

In an interview with EW about his upcoming film Bullet In The Face (a cunning title indeed), comedian and actor Eddie Izzard got to talking about his role in Bryan Fuller’s upcoming The Munsters reboot, Mockingbird Lane.
Izzard: his Grandpa is “much more elegant. It’s twisted-dramatic that does hit comedic somewhere in there.” Wants viewers to “watch and see the humanity within monsters. They can see themselves reflected [back].” The show is aiming for more than just the broad comedy of the original.
Izzard is one of the highlights of the controversial reboot, joining Jerry O’Connell, Portia de Rossi, Mason Cook, Charity Wakefield, Beth Grant and Cheyenne Jackson in the cast of Fuller’s series. The pilot is directed by Bryan Singer.

In true, lazy journalist cut-and-paste fashion, here is the ultimate question-and-answer session with Bullet in the Face writer and producer Alan Spencer. The upcoming 6-part TV series starring Eddie Izzard and Eric Roberts airs on IFC, and is darkly comedic, or comedically dark, or absurdly thrilling. There’s just no one way to categorize it (read our review here).
What was the impetus for making Bullet in the Face darker and more violent than most comedies?
You mean when compared to the behind the scenes of Two & a Half Men?
When I originally wrote Sledge Hammer! as a feature film during the late seventies, it was actually quite violent in keeping with the spirit of the genre that inspired it, namely lone vigilante cops that took the law into their own hands and strangled it with a vengeance. The people around town who read it back then, agents and executives,...

This new IFC original series from Alan Spencer is far darker, more violent, and mind-bending than his classic comedic 80s series Sledge Hammer!.
Set in a city called Bruteville, which is neither American nor European but vaguely both, Bullet in the Face is a grim and violent study of modern film noir in explicit graphic novel style. Far darker and more brutal than most comedies, Bullet in the Face utilizes a sleazy cast of characters covering the tropes of crime stories: the tough-as-nails, brassy female police commissioner; the true-blue cop mourning the death of his partner; the eccentric and fabulously wealthy crime lord; the mysterious, deceitful femme fatale.
And yet it is a comedy. Career criminal Gunter Vogler is shot in the face by his girlfriend, hitman (hitwoman?...

Ray Richmond contributes to Deadline’s TV coverage. When IFC and Sundance Channel president Evan Shapiro departed his post in April, the forthcoming IFC original comedy Bullet In The Face lost its biggest champion. And champions are exactly what a show like Bullet needs considering that the broad, over-the-top half-hour may be the most violent comedy in television history. According to sources, when IFC execs screened the six-episode series, there was shock and nervousness in the room. And now the controversial Bullet, which was not mentioned during IFC’s upfront presentation in March, is being scheduled in a very odd pattern: three episodes back-to-back on two consecutive nights, August 16 and August 17, from 10 Pm-11:30 Pm. The uncertainty of what to do with Bullet In The Face is understandable. While its first three screened episodes show it to be uproarious and twisted, it’s also rife with cinematic-level violence and wildly politically incorrect imagery.
