Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

Robert Downey Jr. won’t accept Chris Hemsworth’s gripes over Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As part of Hemsworth’s recent Vanity Fair cover story, the Thor star revealed he grew frustrated playing the Asgardian hero across four standalone movies and several more “Avengers” films.
“Sometimes I felt like a security guard for the team,” Hemsworth admitted. “I would read everyone else’s lines, and go, ‘Oh, they got way cooler stuff. They’re having more fun. What’s my character doing?’ It was always about, ‘You’ve got the wig on. You’ve got the muscles. You’ve got the costume. Where’s the lighting?’ Yeah, I’m part of this big thing, but I’m probably pretty replaceable.”
Downey shut down Hemsworth’s frustration, telling the publication: “First off, Thor as a character was super tricky to adapt — lots of implied limitations — but he and Ken Branagh...

In the vast realm of Marvel Comics and among the plethora of enticing and intriguing characters, Thor, the God of Thunder, occupies a separate place and fan base. Known for his larger-than-life, regal personality, the comic version vastly differs from Chris Hemsworth’s Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Chris Hemsworth in and as Thor
Fans have for years pointed out how the MCU took away the gravitas and depth of Thor by making him more humane and humorous, almost as if he was a parody of the comic book character. Hemsworth, in a new vulnerable and pretty intimate interview, revealed how he felt the same way about Thor.

Chris Hemsworth is one of the biggest celebrities in the world and is best known for his performance as Thor in the MCU. While he has garnered widespread acclaim for his portrayal of the Norse God, the fourth Thor movie just didn’t live up to the previous films.

However, one below-expectation performance can not stop fans from showing their appreciation for Hemsworth’s role. This includes his fellow MCU colleague, the iconic Robert Downey Jr. who once had some words of compliments for the actor.

The year 2023 was one to forget for Marvel Studios. Time hasn’t been kind to them since Avengers: Endgame rocked the world. That was the peak for MCU, wasn’t it? Who doesn’t remember fans going crazy for a movie that was almost a decade in the making. Ten years of lore was all leading up to that one moment. Amongst all the superhero movies ever made, the Infinity Saga truly was in a league of its own. But 5 years down the lane, the MCU is struggling. And the reason is a cause of worry for every cinema aficionado.

Unlike Iron Man and Captain America, who became instant favorites among fans of the MCU, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor initially struggled to land his footing among the MCU greats. While his first film was far from a failure, it was still considered one of the weaker entries in the initial phases. On top of that, the critical failure of The Dark World would finally push the MCU to make some notable changes to the character.
As a result, we got Taika Waititi for the threequel, which not only surpassed the previous two entries in quality, Ragnarok ended up cementing itself as one of the best pre-Infinity War films. Unfortunately, the character once again hit a new low following the failure of Thor: Love and Thunder, and Hemsworth still hasn’t forgiven himself for this debacle.

Elizabeth Olsen has played the role of Wanda Maximoff a.k.a Scarlet Witch in the MCU since Avengers: Age of Ultron. From being a brainwashed member of Hydra to being one of the Og Avengers, the character has had an interesting arc in the MCU, which seemingly ended in 2022’s Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.
However, Scarlet Witch had one of her most powerful and tragic moments in Avengers: Infinity War where she had to protect Vision, who possessed the Mind Stone, from the Black Order. While there are some amazing scenes with the actress in the film, fans seem to be annoyed at the MCU for deleting a pivotal sequence from the movie.

Only the hardest of hearts could have failed to be moved through Avengers: Endgame, especially through Chris Evans’ performance of them all. As much of a joyride as it felt because of those witty dialogues and scenes, it was also one of the most heartbreaking films in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, surpassing even Avengers: Infinity War in its battle of being a total tear-jerker.
Avengers: Endgame (2019).
That being said, while the movie in itself was one thing in terms of a heart-wrenching storyline, even the sets of the film managed to make one Avenger’s mother burst into tears! This Avenger was none other than the beloved former Captain America portrayer Evans, and his mother actually turned into a sobbing mess after seeing him on the sets of the 2019 blockbuster for an understandable reason.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ was released 5 years ago, it was the biggest MCU event to date which left fans delighted but also heartbroken, since Iron Man ultimately lost his life to defeat Thanos once and for all.
Ever since Iron Man died, fans have been holding out hope that he is not truly gone, especially if we take into account that we are currently in the Multiverse Saga. However, Feige commented on quite a few occasions that Iron Man’s return is absolutely out of the question and his death won’t be touched since it would undo most of the emotional impact that ‘Endgame’ had on fans.
Recently, Robert Downey Jr. talked about his possible return to the MCU. He commented how he would gladly return since the role is integral to his DNA. This left some fans both confused and hopeful, especially since a good chunk of fandom believes that...

Have you ever witnessed a cinematic moment so moving that it lingered long after the credits rolled? The death of Natasha Romanoff in Avengers: Endgame was just one of the moments that devastated Marvel fans, and Scarlett Johansson found it almost as hard to come to terms when she learned about her character’s fate.
Kevin Feige produced the 2019 superhero flick, which is a direct sequel to Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Mark Ruffalo.

The film industry is reeling from the loss of the legendary production designer Ray Chan. It’s been five years since Chris Evans suited up as Captain America for what was seemingly the last time in Avengers: Endgame, but we still have a hard time picturing anyone but him bringing Steve Rogers to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
He’s simply so well-cast in the role that it’s like he’s playing himself! It’s been years since he last picked up the shield, but he’ll always be our Cap.
While he is now synonymous with the part, Chris initially turned it down. Who might have picked up the shield if he never agreed to lead the Avengers? We did some digging and rounded up 11 actors who were considered for the role.
Interestingly, some of them wound up acting alongside Chris in the MCU. Two of them even yielded Cap’s shield at various points.
Others joined the franchise after he left.

MCU has quite a lot of projects to release in 2024, 2025, and beyond. We know that there are several movies being worked on currently and affected by the strikes, but none of them are as anticipated as ‘Avengers 5’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ which are expected to continue MCU’s tradition of majestic crossovers.
Just like in the case of ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame,’ these two movies will also be released only a year apart from each other, but the difference is that this time, they won’t be filmed back-to-back and they’ll be developed by two separate teams of writers and directors.
Next to nothing is known about the director ‘Secret Wars,’ and the most recent rumors mentioned Sam Raimi as the prime candidate although Raimi himself debunked the rumors awhile back, claiming that the studio hasn’t asked him yet. While we don’t have any official info we can always drop names,...

The MCU has a bunch of projects lined up for release in 2024, 2025, and beyond. While several movies are currently in the works and affected by strikes, none are as highly anticipated as ‘Avengers 5’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’ These films are expected to continue the MCU’s tradition of epic crossovers.
Just like ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame,’ these two movies will be released only a year apart. However, unlike before, they won’t be filmed back-to-back, and they’ll be developed by two separate teams of writers and directors.
Very little is known about the director of ‘Secret Wars.’ The latest rumors suggested Sam Raimi as a top contender, but Raimi himself denied these rumors, stating that the studio hasn’t approached him yet. Despite the lack of official information, fans are speculating, and one recent name dropped is Quentin Tarantino. He’s supposedly retiring and working on his last film.

From Marvel cameos to Wade Wilson breaking the fourth wall, and Wolverine dropping F-bombs, the second trailer had something for everyone, with more fans now joining the threequel hypetrain. The new trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine also gave us a proper glimpse of Hugh Jackman’s Logan in his classic yellow spandex, who looks better than ever as Wolverine.
But despite a plethora of references, there was no sign of Dafne Keen’s X-23 from Logan in the trailer. However, per Insider, not only will she be incorporated into the story, but she’ll reportedly be the one to break the news of her Wolverine’s sacrifice to this variant.

What Happened To The MCU?
This… well, this used to be one of the most reliable franchises in Hollywood, and now it’s not.
Let us explain.
For over a decade, it felt like the Marvel Cinematic Universe was on top of the world. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and his rotating crew of filmmakers churned out one hit after another, with each new movie in the MCU guaranteed to be one of the biggest of the year.
So what went wrong?
After what might be the most significant event in cinema history — Avengers: Endgame — the Marvel Cinematic Universe was primed for a reset. Many of the old characters were out, passing the baton to some new faces.

With the recent failure of superhero movies, it seems that people are giving the old movies a second chance and this week, it’s The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Taking to X, people talked about how the movie is actually good compared to modern films!

Michael Douglas is a prominent figure in the MCU, known for his portrayal of Hank Pym, one of Marvel’s memorable Ant-Men. He has appeared in three ‘Ant-Man’ movies and made a brief appearance in ‘Endgame.’
However, Douglas has expressed a desire for his character’s demise for some time now. During an appearance on ‘The View’ to promote his new Apple TV+ historical drama series ‘Franklin,’ he disclosed that he wanted his character to die in the third installment, primarily to explore the potential of special effects.

Currently, Douglas has played the role in 3 ‘Ant-Man’ installments and briefly appeared in ‘Endgame.’ But as it turns out, the actor has had a death wish for his character for quite a while now.
He recently appeared on ‘The View’ to promote his new Apple TV+ historical drama series ‘Franklin,’ and revealed that he wanted his character to die in the third installment, mostly because it would have been cool to utilize those special effects.

Since the film’s initial announcement back in 2023, quite a few fans have been doubting if Anthony Mackie’s Captain America: Brave New World would actually live up to the legacy that Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers left behind. Back in 2008 the Marvel Cinematic Universe officially began with Iron Man. The film starred an actor who, at the time, was going through uncertain times in his career. In fact he was paid only $500,000 for his role in the film while his co-star Terrance Howard was paid $4.5 million for his role due to recently being nominated for an academy award.
After the film’s positive reception upon its release, Marvel started making other films like The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America, leading up to the first Avengers film in 2012. In just four short years, Downy Jr.’s career turned around, and he became a household name.
The actor would continue to portray the super genius hero in a third solo Iron Man film and appear as a secondary character in both Captain America and Spider-Man movies as well as three more Avengers films. His last official...

Any fan of Marvel Comics will be able to tell you that death is, at worst, a temporary inconvenience. No Marvel superhero stays dead for too long, resurrected by cloning technology, psychic projections, visits from parallel universes, or mere unexpected survival. Marvel Comics are identical to soap operas, in that the writers have to contrive increasingly wild ways to keep their characters' stories going, even if they die.
When it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that same rule seems to apply. There have indeed been a few notable deaths throughout the 16-year-old, 30-odd-film series, but many of them have been magically undone. In "Avengers: Endgame," the same wish-granting widget that wiped out half of the universe's population was employed to resurrect them. After a stunt like that mortality becomes something of a joke. Only a few deaths have felt properly permanent (at least so far) in the annals of the MCU,...

After ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ it was clear that changes were coming to the prime Avengers cast in the MCU. Black Widow and Iron Man both sacrificed themselves, closing a significant chapter in the franchise. This left vacancies in the lineup, hinting at the emergence of new faces to take on these roles.
While speculation about the young Avengers was exciting, the reality hasn’t quite met expectations. The MCU has faced challenges recently, with Disney+ shows and cinematic releases experiencing low interest, viewership, and profits. ‘The Marvels’ stands as the lowest-grossing MCU movie to date, highlighting these struggles.

Robert Downey Jr. is not closing the door on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which he kicked off in 2008 with “Iron Man” and headlined for 11 years through 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.” Iron Man met his demise in that tentpole, but that has never stopped rumors from circulating that Marvel is trying to bring Downey back into the fold, especially now that the MCU has hit a box office rough patch with 2023 flops such as “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “The Marvels.” Certainly, Downey’s return as Iron Man could restore Marvel to its blockbuster glory days.
Speaking to Esquire magazine after his Oscar win for “Oppenheimer” last month, Downey was asked if he would ever return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe now that he is officially an Academy Award winner. The actor didn’t hesitate to answer yes.
“Happily. It’s too integral a part of my DNA,” Downey said. “That role chose me.

There have been a lot of "Transformers" cartoons since 1984. Most of them (and I say this as a fan) are pretty unimpressive. One of the best ones is "Transformers: Animated," which aired from 2007 to 2009 on Cartoon Network. Network executive Sam Register created the series like it was "Teen Titans" with robots. Register even recruited one of that show's character designers, the late Derrick J. Wyatt, resulting in a similar art style.
"Animated" broke away from past series' tenets, transforming them you might say — the show's team even cast Megatron voice actor extraordinaire David Kaye as Optimus Prime instead. The series was explicitly pitched as "more like a superhero show than a 'Transformers' show" (read the original production bible here for many tantalizing insights and scrapped ideas). The Autobots each had unique powers and faced off against human villains; against the Decepticons, they were definite underdogs.

In “Tokyo Vice,” honor is a double-edged katana. On one end sits Ozaki (Bokuzō Masana), the Meicho Shimbun newspaper executive who confesses to Emi (Rinko Kikuchi) that he was the one who destroyed the Yoshino videotape — although “confesses” is too generous a word. Ozaki solves her season-long mystery without batting an eye, before mansplaining his action as if Emi is an idiot. He had to destroy the tape. If the Meicho ran a story about a government official’s involvement in the murder of a hostess, then the paper would be frozen out of government business for years. “And how would that serve our readers?” he asks. So now that Emi has brought him further evidence against prime-minister-in-waiting Jotaro Shigematsu (Hajime Inoue), proving his ties to Yakuza leader Shinzo Tozama (Ayumi Tanida), the dignified thing to do is turn over her documents to the proper parties,...

Robert Downey Jr.’s death scene in Avengers: Endgame will perhaps be the most poignant moment in all of the MCU movies. While fans did not see it coming in the Infinity Saga finale, Downey Jr. knew about Iron Man’s fate from around the time of filming Captain America: Civil War. Marvel boss Kevin Feige pitched the idea to the Oppenheimer actor after getting inspired by another Marvel film. Feige was impressed by how Hugh Jackman’s character arc ended in Logan.

For a few years now, there’s been a noticeable decline in the quality of superhero movies, evident in both critical reception and box office performance. By 2023, superhero fatigue had reached its peak. Two out of three Marvel Studios releases had failed to impress, with ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ barely breaking even and ‘The Marvels’ becoming the lowest-grossing MCU movie to date.
The Dceu didn’t fare any better. The year kicked off with ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods,’ which flopped critically and financially, followed by ‘The Flash.’ However, expectations for ‘The Flash’ weren’t high, especially considering controversies surrounding its lead actor. ‘Blue Beetle’ also failed to make an impact despite its wholesome family story. Surprisingly, the year ended on a somewhat positive note with ‘Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom,’ which managed to be a relative success, earning $434.38 million at the box office.

Dceu did not fare any better, a bad year started with ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods,’ which was both critical and box-office failure, followed by ‘The Flash.’ However, it’s important to note that nobody actually expected ‘The Flash’ to be a successful movie, first and foremost due to controversies surrounding its lead actor. ‘Blue Beetle’ also failed despite being a charming wholesome family story. Surprisingly the year was locked in with ‘Aquman and The Lost Kingdom’ and the movie was a relative success, earning 434.38 million Usd at the box office.
