The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is based on real events and draws inspiration from notorious serial killers like Ed Gein and Elmer Wayne Henley. The film intentionally presented itself as a true story to attract a wider audience and explore cultural and political discussions of the 1970s. While the sequels may not be directly based on true stories, they still draw inspiration from Leatherface's character and the legacy of the original film.
While Leatherface remains a fictional character, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre true story is chillingly based on real events, including the ominous house that the cannibalistic family lived in. This all lends credence to the aura of fear that the film still embodies. The iconic slasher is still considered one of the most influential horror movies of all time and is credited with breaking new ground for the genre, including the ominous characterization of using a large, hulking, faceless figure as the killer.

Hansel and Gretel, the two German kids who nearly became somebody’s meal, need little introduction. The characters in this Brothers Grimm classic have been used as a lesson about stranger danger and resilience for years. And while Hansel and Gretel’s ordeal has been put on screen multiple times — both faithfully and loosely — Yim Pil-sung’s 2007 movie is one of the more distinct adaptations. This Korean reimagining retains the essence of the influential fairy tale while also adding its own unique twists.
Hansel and Gretel was one of several movies from the golden age of South Korean Horror — often referred to as “K-Horror” in the West — to be based on fairy or folk tales. While Arang and A Tale of Two Sisters dug into local Korean lore, other movies drew from European narrations. However, much like Cinderella and The Red Shoes, Hansel and Gretel’s interpretation of its basis is rather liberal.

For horror fans, not all streaming services are made the same, especially as streamers and studios continue to sequester their content away on their individual platforms. Now, some services are way better than others, and a few of the best might be a little surprising. Some are the major streamers, others are more niche and cater to horror fans specifically, and a few are even free.
But what makes a great streamer for horror fans? It's a combination of plentiful horror content and quality selection — and hopefully both. And while Disney+ obviously didn't make the list, most other steamers, fortunately, have a relatively good amount of horror content, both shows and movies.
Updated on January 27, 2024 by Robert Vaux: As always, streaming services undergo periodic shifts as movies disappear from one service and reappear on another. The list has been updated to reflect the fare available on each service as of the above date.

Grimm Season 5 lacked narrative urgency with filler episodes that disrupted the building tension. Grimm Season 1 established the show's complex mythos but lacked dynamic storytelling. Grimm Season 4 played a crucial role in character growth and plot development without reaching the heights of previous creative achievement.
The police procedural Grimm combines classic cop drama with a fantasy twist. With six seasons, it's time to determine the series' standout. Over its run from 2011-2017, the NBC series brought a creative monster-hunting element to the standard police show format. Following Portland homicide detective Nick Burkhardt after he discovers he's descended from an elite line of criminal profilers tasked with keeping the peace between humans and mythological creatures, Grimm built a rich world pulled from classic fairytales and folklore.

Superman & Lois star Elizabeth Tulloch recently revealed that a Grimm reunion is coming to Season 4 of The CW superhero series.
On Instagram, the actor — who stars as Lois Lane on Superman & Lois — shared some "shots from our first week back to work" featuring her co-stars Tyler Hoechlin (Clark Kent/Superman), Michael Bishop (Jonathan Kent) and Alex Garfin (Jordan Kent). In her caption, she also asked fans of NBC's Grimm and ABC's A Million Little Things to "swipe for a surprise." Grimm defied the odds and lasted for six seasons, producing over 100 episodes, thanks to its unique blend of procedural and fantastical elements. Despite the disappointment of its final season being cut short, Grimm's creators were not surprised and aimed for a satisfying, but not definitive, ending. Grimm's legacy continues through syndication, streaming, comic books, and novels, showing that no series is ever truly dead in the modern media landscape.
Based on the fairy tales written by the Brothers Grimm, Grimm was an NBC supernatural drama that seemed to defy all odds. It was released in 2011, when other fantasy shows such as Constantine, based on the hit adult DC Comic Hellblazer, were dropping like flies. The popularity of serialized television was still relatively new, but Grimm also had a procedural element, making it more akin to series like The X-Files. It blended the familiar format of a monster/mystery-of-the-week series with a fantastical internal mythology.

At first glance, it may seem like ABC's A Million Little Things was a show about death — it certainly gives off this impression from the first episode. However, the popular show went on to expand from that, and many of its deeper themes soon became apparent. While never really hitting the mark with critics, with sluggish ratings barely above the 50% mark, A Million Little Things was terminally underrated.
Despite this, the show had a loyal following, and a fan base that appreciated its straightforward good qualities, even if they were plain and not put across with any special resonance that garnered acclaim. After a successful four-season run between 2018 and 2022, showrunner DJ Nash somewhat abruptly announced that the fifth season would be its last. Its loyal fans were left devastated, quickly petitioning for more.

It’s time again for spooks and frights, and with the original “Charmed” series celebrating its 25th anniversary, it’s also seems like a good time to check out some of TV’s most famous (and infamous) witches.

Television procedurals follow a tried-and-true formula that keeps crime mystery fans coming back for more. Each episode introduces an intense conflict for investigators to solve, or else face dire public safety consequences. The procedural genre has become more crowded in recent years, leaving a select golden few to thrive and others to be forgotten.
Some of the most notable TV procedurals, including Criminal Minds and Law and Order: Svu, unfold their stories in unique and clever ways. They can always keep their audiences guessing. Other thrilling shows, like Life and Murder in the First, try to replicate their successes but are ultimately pushed to the sidelines. Even though these series are typically forgotten by broader audiences, they still offer entertaining adventures.

Previously, it had been revealed that Zegler was starring in a live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. At the time, there had been some trolls on social media complaining about the casting, unhappy with seeing a Latina incarnation of the Disney princess. Recently, new set photos emerged of Snow White's reimagined seven companions consisting of varying sizes, ethnicities, and genders. That too sparked some online discourse with some on social media, leading to a response on Twitter from Zegler herself.

extremely appreciative of the love i feel from those defending me online, but please don’t tag me in the nonsensical discourse about my casting. i really, truly do not want to see it.

This season of Nancy Drew is possibly the most fun and simultaneously the most painful the series has ever been.
But after the laughter and tears of Nancy Drew Season 4 Episode 7, I'm not sure how much more I can take.
Let's face it, The Drew Crew couples are a mess, and it hurts to watch.
We can't really argue with Nick when he says the supernatural ruins the relationship in this Nancy Drew quote. So far, he's right.
From what I can see, the supernatural ruins every relationship it touches.

Peter Werner, the Oscar-winning director known for his television work that spanned five decades and included helming episodes of such popular series as Moonlighting, A Different World, Justified and Law & Order: Svu, has died. He was 76.
Werner died Tuesday morning in Wilmington, North Carolina, his younger brother, Tom Werner (producer on The Cosby Show, Roseanne, That ’70s Show, The Conners), told The Hollywood Reporter. “He had a torn aorta that the doctors weren’t able to repair. So sudden,” he wrote in an email.
As a student project while attending the American Film Institute, Peter Werner directed the 1976 short film In the Region of Ice, which was based on Joyce Carol Oates’ short story and starred Fionnula Flanagan. The project won the Oscar for live-action short film.
His career kicked off from there, with Werner helming a 1977 episode of Family. The ABC drama counted Mike Nichols and Aaron Spelling as executive producers.

January Jones is joining the debate over self-tape audition practices in Hollywood.
The “Mad Men” alum took to her Instagram Stories to call out fees to audition and the issue of sending in self-tapes as opposed to in-person readings. “Note to Hollywood: It’s time for casting directors to come back into the office like everyone else. To audition actors in person,” Jones wrote on Instagram (via Variety). “And if anyone asks for a Fee to audition please know that this is criminal and Pathetic.”
She continued, “I personally have had to self tape several times since the pandemic began and there is zero benefit to it for anyone involved. It’s time consuming, expensive, and a drag to whomever you have to drag in to read with you (sorry Mom), and is often done with zero direction/notes. Thanks to strong reviews, a buzzy trailer and young fans celebrating the film on TikTok, “M3GAN” is about to top 100 million worldwide. The Gerard Johnstone-directed film was sold as yet another horror team-up between Jason Blum’s Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster, with both moguls now famous enough among horror fans for such a pitch to qualify as akin to Steven Spielberg and George Lucas uniting for “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”
The film’s not-so-secret weapon, however, is its screenwriter Akela Cooper. The self-professed genre nerd isn’t yet a household name, but she may be on her way to becoming one.
Cooper took time last week to speak with TheWrap, discussing the origins of “M3GAN,” trimming the initially R-rated film to a PG-13 and inserting her parents into the “Star Trek” universe. Most importantly, she answered tough questions about the biggest plot hole in her 2018 slasher romp “Hell Fest.

Time and time again, horror has proven to be one of the most successful genres of them all, thanks in part to low budgets with big rewards. Case in point, look at "M3GAN," which raked in over 30 million in its opening weekend against a modest 12 million budget. If the killer AI wasn't one of Blumhouse's top priorities beforehand, it is now. How could she not be? Last October revealed the teaser that set the internet ablaze with the titular android dancing on the way to her next kill. "M3GAN" fever was in full effect.
On top of "Housebound" director Gerard Johnstone, the success of "M3GAN" can also be attributed to its screenwriter Akela Cooper. Her television work includes such shows like "Grimm," "Luke Cage," and "The 100," before making her feature film debut with the script for "Hell Fest." But everything changed once the bonkers ride that is "Malignant" came to the screen.

The Far Side from artist Gary Larson will be celebrating its 44th anniversary in 2023 and is still one of the most well-recognized single-panel comic strips in the world. Its combination of satire and visual humor has kept readers laughing for decades, with the official run from Chronicle Features and Universal Press Syndicate beginning in 1979 and concluding in 1995.
The Far Side isn't the only one-panel comic strip out there though, with a range of other famous lines continuing to add to the medium. Although some of these might have developed into larger comics, or are perhaps combined to craft longer runs, ultimately these are some of the best, most notable, and overall funniest single-panel artworks in the genre.

Coming into a franchise as storied as the Shrek series, director Joel Crawford was thrilled at the opportunity to show a new side of the iconic Puss in Boots. A sequel to the 2011 Puss in Boots film, DreamWorks Animation’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish takes place after Shrek Forever After, when Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) is accidentally killed by a bell and discovers he is down to his ninth, and final, life. After a brush with a mysterious wolf who is determined to take his last life, Puss decides to live the rest of his life in hiding. However, he soon learns about a wishing star that could help them get his lives back. Crawford wanted to take the story of Puss in Boots into a darker direction than the other films in the Shrek franchise, using inspiration from Grimm’s Fairy Tales.

While it only appears on the screen for a few brief moments in Toy Story, Andy's bookshelf is a virtual treasure trove of Easter eggs that feature nods to Pixar's past. Viewers get a quick glimpse of the shelf during Woody's birthday staff meeting early in the film, and most of the titles are vibrant enough to be read while Woody is talking. Though a few of the books such as Great Places for Children to Visit are just vague space fillers, others like Tin Toy and Red's Dream add visual interest to the background while actually having a deeper meaning.

1986 was a big year for Tom Cruise, with Tony Scott’s Top Gun cementing his status as the era’s biggest star. Yet, earlier that year, Universal released a delayed Tom Cruise epic that actually carried a heftier price tag than Top Gun and paired him with that movie’s director, Tony Scott’s brother – Ridley Scott. The film was Legend, and while a pretty notable flop in 1986, it’s since gone on to become something of a classic in the fantasy genre, even if it scared Cruise away from ever attempting another fantasy epic. It remains the only time Ridley Scott directed Cruise and sorting through the myriad cuts of the film, which boasts not one but two exceptional musical scores (Tangerine Dream and Jerry Goldsmith), is a chore. Yet, there’s something to be said about this Grimm’s Fairy Tale for adults – with Tim Curry stealing the...

Upon its 2006 premiere, Guillermo Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth has been hailed as a cinematic gem. The film deconstructs classic story tropes by applying darkened visuals within surreal themes, very easily making it a modern fairytale for its magnificently detailed execution.
Modern fairytales aren't a genre that's overly explored in the world of filmmaking, but when it is, a result of excellent works has been achieved. Users of Reddit have stated which modern fairytale films are the best of the best, becoming classics in their own right.

Following his mega-hits The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach, Tim Burton returned to the stop-motion animation genre with Corpse Bride. Reddit user onex7805 is surprised how the 2005 dark fantasy musical is "rarely discussed today".
Set in a cool-toned Victorian era with hints of gothic music, Corpse Bride is a tale where love goes deeper than romance.

While Supernatural's long run is over, the show's legacy lives on with its ongoing prequel series The Winchesters that recently debuted on The CW. Dealing with the origins of John Winchester and Mary Campbell's relationship (and the supernatural sojourns they have had ever since), The Winchesters is an interesting exercise into world-building when it comes to a horror prequel.
The show is bound to lead viewers down a rabbit hole of more such supernatural shows that balance the other-worldly elements with human emotions, along with some more iconic and successful prequel series.

Amazon Studios is shaking up the leadership of its TV programming operations under Head of Television Vernon Sanders, I have learned. Marc Resteghini is stepping down as US/Global Head of Development, sources said. He is negotiating a producing deal with Amazon Studios. Nick Pepper, Head of Studio Creative Content, and Laura Lancaster, Head of Series, are expected to divvy up Resteghini’s responsibilities and co-run development and production of TV content, reporting to Sanders. MGM TV’s operations remain separate and do not factor into the current executive changes.
A rep for Amazon Studios declined comment.
Resteghini, Pepper and Lancaster were named to their most recent roles in early 2021 as part of an Amazon Studios TV restructuring that created the layer of three top programming positions reporting to then-Amazon Studios co-heads of TV Sanders and Albert Cheng (who also was COO).
