No one can say that Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh delivers the same movie time after time. In an eclectic three-decade career, he has directed crowd-pleasing all-star vehicles, action comedies, political dramas, micro-mini experimental works, true-life story (“Erin Brockovich”) and even a film starring porn actress Sasha Grey (“The Girlfriend Experience”).
In addition to his Oscar success, Soderbergh has also found success bringing his singular vision to the small screen, winning an Emmy for directing and editing the TV movie “Behind the Candelabra” (which isn’t included on this list of big screen outings). He’s also been nominated twice as a director on “The Knick,” as a cinematographer on “Behind the Candelabra” and as a producer on “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired,” “His Way” and “Godless.”
Take a tour of our photo gallery of Soderbergh’s 1o greatest films, and see if your favorite topped the list.

Who knew when the year began that a sequel to a 36-year-old movie starring its 60-year-old actor who headlined the original would be the box office champ so far this year? But “Top Gun: Maverick” starring Tom Cruise, which was released Aug. 23 on digital formats while still flying high in theaters is not only the No. 1 film of the year with a staggering haul of 683.4 million domestically and 720 million overseas. And the acclaimed film didn’t even play in China or Russia. “Top Gun: Maverick” is also the biggest film of Cruise’s career which began in 1981 with Franco Zeffirelli’s “Endless Love.”
And with the digital release, let’s relive 1986, the year we first felt the need for speed and flew into the danger zone. The year the original “Top Gun” took our breath away.

It’s only December 2 and we have two more episodes after this before Christmas, but this week’s “Saturday Night Live” still opened with a “Christmas Carol” homage featuring Alec Baldwin. Despite seeming to jump the gun a little bit, seasonally, it’s one of the more incisive cold opens in a little while, pounding hard at Donald Trump’s most recent string of missteps.
Afterwards, though, it was an episode devoted to having fun with a fresh face who proved game for all sorts of wackily colored wigs and character moments. If it weren’t for her opening monologue and the fact that U2 was the musical guest, you’d hardly know she was Irish.

Shortly after moving to Phoenix, Arizona for a job – and going through a breakup – Katie Gallagher “decided there was no time like the present” to lose the 40 lbs. she had wanted to drop since college.
Gallagher, now 26, began a 10-month journey to shed the weight (she started at 180 lbs. and reached her goal of 140 lbs. in July 2016) that was caused by a diet “full of burgers, pizza, pasta, burritos, chips, soda, alcohol, and bagels,” Gallagher tells People. “Portion sizes didn’t matter to me and neither did calories. I more or less buried my head in the sand when it came to nutrition.

Updated: In a newly-released letter, a variety of past and present female staffers of “Saturday Night Live” have offered their solidarity for former cast member and current U.S. senator Al Franken, recently accused of groping two women, once in 2010 and once in 2006. The letter is titled “SNL Women Offer Solidarity in Support of Al Franken” and, per the Boston Globe, offers a full list of signees, which include writers, performers, and producers, amongst others associated with the NBC sketch comedy series. Of those listed, only three are current crew members.

Whose Episode Is It?
It’s a Negan episode. Wait, don’t go! It’s actually much better than it sounds! In fact, “The Big Scary U” is not only the best episode of Season 8, it might be better than any episode from Season 7. And it manages this feat by simply giving Negan some depth and motivation, an actual character for us to consider, instead of a one-note psychopath. It also gives poor Jeffrey Dean Morgan something to do other than bluster, and he admirably rises to the occasion.
“The Big Scary U” also goes a long way in confirming that this season will finally seriously address the moral costs of living in the zombie apocalypse, as it both establishes Negan’s philosophy and questions Rick’s methodology. It even manages to address this in different storylines involving multiple characters, which is a rarity for the standard recent “Walking Dead...

“…And I’m Eric!” With that simple declaration, a star was born. “Saturday Night Live” has been lampooning the entire Trump family for quite some time now, with Alec Baldwin’s take on Donald naturally getting most of the attention, but Alex Moffat’s impersonation of Eric has gradually emerged as the show’s funniest recurring character. The simpleminded son returned to last night’s espionage-themed cold open, which found him and his brother (Mikey Day) having a cloak-and-dagger meeting with Julian Assange (Kate McKinnon).

Often a dog detecting cancer story starts with a canine nosing an area on a person that elicits a pain sharp enough for them to take notice and see a doctor.
For Michael Dizoglio, a diagnosis came from a lack of pain.
The Denver resident was used to feeling a little sting when his father’s large husky dog Mickey jumped on him as a greeting at the door.
“One time he jumped on me from the right and I didn’t feel any pain … and I thought it should have hurt,” Dizoglio told CBS Denver. “I didn’t feel anything.

The second season of “Luke Cage” appears to be coming together nicely, but the latest news might be cause for concern. According to an EW report and photo, Danny Rand (Finn Jones) — the Immortal Iron Fist, Protector of K’un L’un, Sworn Enemy of the Hand — will be dropping by for reasons that have remained unclear for now.
IndieWire has not been shy about its disdain for the drearily one-note “Iron Fist,” but at this point, it’s almost too easy to pile on the gripes and it’s become boring as well. Yes, the character (and to an extent, the acting) has been problematic, but in the interests of trying to keep an open mind and playing devil’s advocate to the knee-jerk resistance to all things Iron Fist, we’ve racked our brains to figure out the upside to this development.

A lot of us have jumped a fence in our lives for one reason or another, but how many have ever done it in the same style as Jackie Chan? I’m going to guess the number is pretty low since Chan is one of the best at getting around obstacles on film that anyone has ever seen. The way he does it makes it look like jumping a fence would be simple, but the honest to goodness truth is that when you see the finished product you don’t often get to see how many takes it required to get it

Darci Lynn doesn’t need a puppet to blow America away — but it comforts the shy girl, and the prop makes her talent even more remarkable. Hugh Jackman presumably knows a good deal about wolverines by now, having played the most famous of them all for the last 17 years. By Mark Cerulli
Prior to seeing Josh Greenbaum’s illuminating documentary, Becoming Bond, which premiered on Hulu May 20th, I had dismissed George Lazenby’s mystifying refusal to continue as 007 as just another gullible young actor taking bad career advice; like Tom Selleck passing on Indiana Jones, Travolta nixing Forrest Gump, Thomas Jane handing Don Draper to Jon Hamm… but there’s more to it than that, a lot more as it turns out.
Cleverly combining interview footage of Lazenby, still hale and hearty at 77, with well-staged recreations, Becoming Bond dives deep into this complicated and impulsive star to understand How he could casually dump one of the most coveted roles in the history of film. As it turns out, that decision is symbolic of who George Lazenby really is: intelligent, charming, naïve but most of all, independent.

John Stamos and Bob Saget traded stories about their close friend Don Rickles on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday, remembering the advice he gave them about love and his unique approach to comedy. Rickles died last week at age 90.
Kimmel was also close to Rickles, so he joined Stamos and Saget for 12 minutes of rapid-fire, laugh-filled reminiscing. The segment was full of digressions and wisecracks, but all roads led back to Rickles and the affection that the three men shared for the legendary comedian. "He was the best," Stamos said.

Netflix has released a new trailer for “War Machine,” David Michôd’s adaptation of the book “The Operators: The Wild & Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan” by the late journalist Michael Hastings. Brad Pitt, Tilda Swinton and Ben Kingsley star in the film, which is headed to the streaming service in May. Watch the trailer below.

Here’s the official synopsis: “In a film for our times, writer-director David Michôd (“Animal Kingdom”) recreates a U.S. General’s roller-coaster rise and fall as part reality, part savage parody — raising the specter of just where the line between them lies today. His is an anti-establishment, pro-soldier exploration in the form of an absurdist war story of a born leader’s ultra-confident march right into the dark heart of folly.”

Netflix should have seen this coming. Already in the middle of a whitewashing controversy over their latest Marvel television series “Iron Fist,” the streaming giant is under fire again for the same issue because of their upcoming film adaptation of the manga series “Death Note.” The teaser trailer premiered last week, featuring “The Fault in Our Stars” and “Palo Alto” actor Nat Wolff in the lead role, and backlash quickly erupted over the whitewashed casting, which extends to nearly every role in the film.

Sarah Rose started an online petition against the movie in the wake of the trailer’s release, claiming it “shouldn’t be cast with all white actors, as it goes against the very soul of the story.” The petition has a goal of 12,000 signatures and has already eclipsed the 11,000 mark as of this writing.

Over the course of his long career, Samuel L. Jackson has mastered a number of things. Killing bad guys? Check. Recapping Game of Thrones? Check. Killing all of the motherf*cking snakes on the motherf*cking planes? Double, triple check. On top of all that, take a look at the Kong: Skull Island actor's Instagram account and you'll soon discover that he's particularly fond of taking selfies, especially with other celebrities. Does he manage to get his entire face into every shot? Ok, no, maybe not. (Help him out, Kim.) In fact it seems like he actually prefers to take photos with just the tiniest, inconspicuous sliver of his trademark glasses sticking out of the corner, while the spotlight falls on stars like Tom Hanks, James Corden, Brie Larson, and Spike Lee. Frankly, we can't get enough of his unintentionally hilarious selfie style, and we're keeping our fingers crossed for more.

The proverbial fat lady is about to sing — again — as Grant Gustin readies to reshoot a climactic scene from The Flash‘s musical crossover with Supergirl (titled “Duet” and airing Tuesday, March 21 at 8/7).
Having spent much of the day filming an episode that airs later in Season 3, Gustin has kicked off Barry’s trademark sneaks and suited back up in a tux-and-tails. He now is laying supine on the ground, exposed to the elements of a typically cold, very late Vancouver-adjacent night, annnnd… that is about all we can reveal about the intense moment. Because, you know, superspoilers!

Between lead roles in “The Leftovers” and “Fargo,” April is shaping up to be Carrie Coon month on television, which is definitely going to be as delightful as it sounds. While plot details for the upcoming third season of Noah Hawley’s anthology series are still under wraps, we got our official first look at cast members Ewan McGregor, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Carrie Coon in a teaser earlier this week, and let’s just say we’re dying to see more.

With $88 million last weekend, “Logan” (20th Century Fox) made the case for a March box office rebound. “Kong: Skull Island” (Universal) should maintain that momentum, though not at quite the same level.
With a production cost of $190 million (double the “Logan” pricetag), “Kong” will need major worldwide appeal to justify the expense. Produced by the now-Chinese-owned Legendary Pictures, who are coming off the shaky “The Great Wall,” the new film ticks all the boxes for a hit.
It’s a massive production, familiar enough for traction but still fresh (particularly for foreign viewers), and sufficiently similar to other hits (see: “Jurassic Park” franchise). And, there’s enough intelligence in the directing and acting talent to suggest a good critical reaction. The director is Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who made his debut at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival with “The Kings of Summer;” the cast includes Tom Hiddleston, Oscar-winner Brie Larson, John C. Reilly,...

Michael Mann’s Ferrari movie may make it to the finish line after all. Hugh Jackman is now in negotiations to star as Enzo Ferrari in the biopic, with Noomi Rapace playing his estranged wife Linda; Christian Bale was previously attached to the long-in-the-making film, but departed early last year due to a scheduling conflict.

“Diamond Cartel,” directed by Salamat Mukhammed-Ali (“The Whole World at Our Feet”), preserves one final performance from one of Hollywood’s finest, Peter O’Toole. While it may seem sort of surreal to see Mr. O’Toole go from the wooing Katherine Hepburn to wielding a machine gun, it’s actually quite comedic.

You gotta feel really bad for the Berlin Film Festival. Every year they announce some major world premiere, this year its James Mangold’s Wolverine movie “Logan,” starring Hugh Jackman, and every year the films studios let pretty much all the major North American press see the movie before it “premieres.” So, “Logan” is “premiering” in Berlin, but trust us when we say, you’ll see reviews from the American press first.

A modern-day cultural Berlin wall, Cuba may not be receptive to commerce, but it remains open to the art and culture from its neighbor 90 miles north. As such, images of the country remain illusive and seductive to an American viewer. It’s this kinder, gentler world of “normalized” relations that serves as a jumping-off point for Give Me Future, as Edm trio Major Lazer dream of adding a Cuba show to their tour of conflict zones. Known for summer bangers “Lean On” and “Light It Up,” they group has an easier time playing in Pakistan and Venezuela, despite the Caribbean vibes of their most popular hits.
