What’s cheering about this lot, apart from the fact that as comedies, they should all technically cheer us up, is how different they are. There’s the surreal chaos of Year of the Rabbit, and the sweet warmth of Lovesick, the Pythonesque bonkersness of Yonderland, the satirical might of The Thick of It and much more. Something for everyone, you might say.

Neil Forsyth’s The Gold is a true crime drama with a distinctive perspective. As much as it’s about the cat-and-mouse chase between the robbers of £26 million’s worth of gold bullion in November 1983, and the special task force trying to catch them, it’s also about the British class system. Over six episodes (airing weekly on BBC One and available as a box-set on BBC iPlayer), Forsyth tells a story about villains on both sides of the social divide and the entrenched systems protecting those at the top. His London is just as veined with establishment corruption, freemasonry and snobbery as it is with armed robbers, hooky fences and locals who keep their mouths shut for fear of reprisal.
The ensemble drama covers the period from the 1983 robbery, then the largest gold heist in British history, to the investigation and sentencing of select ring leaders. The story, as the newspapers show,...

A British version of “Call My Agent!”?!? Mon Dieu! The critically acclaimed French comedy series, set at a Parisian talent agency, now has had a British remake set at an agency in the heart of London’s Soho. Called “Ten Percent” (an English translation of “Call My Agent!’s” original name “Dix Pour Cent”), the original became a hit for the way it explored the often-fractious relationship between agent and talent, a relationship that can have a skyrocketing ego on one side and expectation management and endless anxiety on the other. It also received acclaim for featuring cameos by celebrities from Isabelle Huppert to Sigourney Weaver, who appeared to relish the opportunity to gently mock themselves. It is a tradition that continues in the British version, with cameos by David and Jessica Oyelowo, Emma Corrin, David Harewood and Helena Bonham Carter.

Ever since the BAFTAs moved up to take place ahead of the Oscars in 2001, they’ve done an outstanding job previewing the eventual Academy Awards winners in the four acting races. However, there are instances where having the home field advantage has meant that a Brit wins at the BAFTAs even if they go on to lose at the Academy Awards.
In 2017, Dev Patel (“Lion”) pulled off an upset in Best Supporting Actor leaving eventual Oscar winner Mahershala Ali (“Moonlight”) sitting in his seat. Colin Firth (“A Single Man”) did likewise in 2010 putting a stop to the winning streak of Jeff Bridges (“Crazy Heart”).
In 2005, Imelda Staunton (“Vera Drake”) won the Best Actress BAFTA over, among others, Charlize Theron (“Monster”) who would, in turn, prevail at the Oscars. Could we see the same scenario play out in this year’s Best Actress race? According to our BAFTA predictions, Oscar frontrunner...

When held up to the heady heights of its BAFTA-winning spiritual predecessor Twenty Twelve, the first series of W1A fell short on occasions.
But with a new series opener in which a high-level management power struggle starts simmering alongside the usual japes, hi-jinks and gaffes at Broadcasting House, the BBC's self-flagellating satire is at last hitting its stride.
Hugh Bonneville's still the star of the show as Ian Fletcher, keeping a sharp focus on charter renewal as his contemporaries in the Way Ahead Task Force fall over themselves (almost literally at one point) to get one over on their professional rivals. There's whispers of a new senior post at stake, and everyone seems to have their eye on it.

Yes, everything about this documentary - following Kent's first elected police and crime commissioner Ann Barnes - was bonafide, even if it felt like W1A a good chunk of the time... and it made us grateful that we're not followed by a cheeky camera crew. Read on for the most spoofesque moments of the documentary...
1. The onion of policing.
Who doesn't love a flip chart? Ann had one with circles within circles drawn on it, and explained: "These are all the various things, different kinds of policing in Kent, and these are the different kinds of policing priorities in terms of priority." But when she was asked to name a crime that would be on the outermost ring,...

BAFTA handed out its TV Awards in London this evening with ITV drama Broadchurch scoring a trifecta of prizes. The series, which is heading into production on its second season in the UK and is being remade in the U.S. as Gracepoint, won best drama, best actress for Olivia Colman and best supporting actor for David Bradley. The wins marked Colman’s third BAFTA and Bradley’s first. Colman’s previous nods were for comedy Twenty Twelve and drama Accused. Netflix had its first ever BAFTA win with Breaking Bad voted Best International series. Netflix is the series broadcaster in the UK where BAFTA late last year said it was updating its rules to include web-based broadcasters to be eligible for TV awards. Channel 4 drama Southcliffe and the same network’s comedy The It Crowd led the overall nominations going in with four nods apiece. Southcliffe‘s Sean Harris...

Ian Hislop's Olden Days: The Power of the Past in Britain: BBC Two, 9pm

Hislop undertakes a thorough tour of Britain, journeying from Tintagel to Glastonbury and Winchester. Much like the Have I Got News For You regular's other history documentaries, it focuses very much on the narrative of our history, as he holds up a mirror to the audience.
Law & Order: UK: ITV, 9pm

Tom Riley signs up for a Mark Gatiss-penned adventure in Doctor Who series 8...
A new guest star has been added to the line-up for the currently-shooting Doctor Who series 8, with Tom Riley confirmed for a guest slot.
Riley is going to appear on one of the two episodes being penned for the new series by Mark Gatiss. Somewhat inevitably, that's all the information that the BBC is giving us at the moment, Thus, Riley's exact role remains a mystery.
His previous credits? Glad you asked. They include Twenty Twelve, St Trinian's 2: The Legend Of Fritton's Gold (along with David Tennant) and Da Vinci's Demons (where he plays Leonardo Da Vinci).

America just can’t get enough of the royals.
BBC America has ordered Almost Royal, the network’s first original comedy series about two young British aristocrats traveling to America for the first time. Ed Gamble and Amy Hoggart will play Georgie and Poppy Carlton respectively, heirs to the Caunty Manor estate in Norfolk, England.
According to the network’s description, Georgie and Poppy, as distant descendants to the British Royal Family, leave their privileged lives behind to allow a camera crew to follow them on their unofficial royal tour of the U.S. – which will also serve to commemorate their late father.

W1A: Wednesday (March 19) at 10pm on BBC Two
There may be trouble ahead, because former Olympics Head of Deliverance Ian Fletcher (Hugh Bonneville) is heading to the BBC in W1A, the follow-up, don't-you-dare-call-it-a-sequel to BAFTA-winning mockumentary Twenty Twelve.
He's joined by clueless buzzword-spewing PR guru Siobhan Sharpe, played to perfection again by show-stealing Jessica Hynes, as well as a whole host of brand new oddballs and incompetents inside Broadcasting House. Cringe and clever, W1A certainly delivers and is never afraid to bite the hand that feeds it for.

W1A - the follow-up to Twenty Twelve - will follow Ian after the London 2012 Olympics in his new role as the BBC's Head of Values.
Ian faces immediate challenges in the first episode as Mebyon Kernow activist Nigel Trescott (Simon Greenall) complains that Cornwall is under-represented on the BBC, provoking dissent among regional presenting talent. Meanwhile, entertainment producer Lucy Freeman (Nina Sosanya) encounters difficulties as she tries to secure the services of Clare Balding for a new flagship show called Britain's Tastiest Village.

As jaunty as Jean Dujardin’s beret, but in a sincere, old-fashioned kind of way. It could almost have been rediscovered from the 1940s… I’m “biast” (pro): love Clooney as an actor and a filmmaker; love the cast
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I try to avoid hearing too much of other critics’ reactions to a film before I’ve seen it, but there was no avoiding the barrage of disappointment that came hurling over Twitter last week, as so many of my North American colleagues responded to The Monuments Men with a resounding “meh.” This was a disappointment to me, because I’d been so looking forward to this movie.
Well, now that I’ve seen it, I don’t know what the hell they’re all talking about, because this movie is fantastic.

The problem with the whole 'dramedy' genre is that too often the TV show ends up being neither dramatic enough nor funny enough. Like the police force in Danny Boyle's new cop comedy Babylon, who refuse to make a decision on whether to hold fire or move in, it ends up paralysed and doing neither.
Babylon should have been a brilliant comedy. Peep Show and Fresh Meat writers Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong sprinkled their laughter fairy-dust across the 90-minutes and from the opening gambit of a semi-naked man, letting it all hang out, hollering, "Do not taser my knob end," the show spliced together silliness and biting satire.
The main touchstones, as the show took swipes at everything from social media to PR communications spin, were Twenty Twelve and The Thick of It. Unfortunately for Babylon, while those shows were as sharp as needles, comedy perfection, its own...

The lost Johnny Cash gets released
According to Cash's son John, the country legend was a prolific hoarder, hanging on to everything from original audio tapes for The Johnny Cash Show to "a camel saddle gift from the prince of Saudi Arabia". That explains why it's taken several years since his death in 2003 for anyone to find Out Among the Stars, an album he recorded in the early 1980s. Columbia dismissed the album as not worth releasing, but John Cash describes the 12 tracks – which include a duet with Johnny's wife, June Carter – as "beautiful". 24 March.

Steven Toast, Toast of London - Simon Reynolds, Movies Editor
Matt Berry will be familiar to comedy fans thanks to his role as Douglas Reynholm in The It Crowd, but its cult gems like Garth Marenghi's Darkplace and Snuff Box that really got the most out of him. He found his best role yet this year in Toast of London, a sitcom focused around his London luvvie Steven Toast. A vain and egotistical actor with a moustache that'd make Burt Reynolds envious, Toast, like great British sitcom characters Partridge and Brent before him, is a...

What can be said about Michael Palin that hasn’t been said already? Perhaps calling him a Renaissance man, or comparing him to a shark that never stops swimming. He’s something different to each generation, be it as a member of Monty Python; a unique explorer and travel presenter neither in the vein of Alan Whicker or Karl Pilkington; a filmmaker; a geographer and railway enthusiast; or as a man of letters both fictional and non-fictional. His works spans every cultural medium imaginable short of painting and sculpture, though chances are he indulges those in his spare time as well.
Palin and Python are back in the news not just for court cases, but for the shock announcement they’re reuniting for a limited amount of shows at the O2 arena next summer. It will be the first time since 1988 they’ve performed together, albeit without the late Graham Chapman.

BBC Two has commissioned a follow-up to its comedy Twenty Twelve.
W1A will follow Hugh Bonneville's Ian Fletcher as he takes on his next big job as Head of Values at the BBC.
In his new role, Ian's job task is to reshape and redefine the BBC "in particular for Licence Fee Renegotiation and Charter Renewal in 2016 and 2017".
The new four-part series will also see Jessica Hynes reprising her role of Siobhan Sharpe, but will otherwise feature new situations and characters.
Janice Hadlow, Controller of BBC Two, said: "Twenty Twelve was one of BBC Two's stand out comedy hits last year, and I'm absolutely thrilled that John Morton and the fantastic off-screen team are coming together again as well as some of our most loved characters from the first series."
Morton added: "It isn't a demolition job on anybody or anything, and it isn't one giant in-joke,...
