Here's a pretty disturbing proposition for you to mentally chop down into easily digestible chunks - Lars Von Trier's Nymphomaniac makes its way into cinemas this week. The controversial Danish director's new ensemble movie revolves around the reminiscence of a sex addict named Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) who's found in the street by an academic (Stellan Skarsgård). Joe proceeds to tell him her personal story and the film plays out in flashbacks across different time periods, fleshed out by an array of well-known actors who engage themselves in graphic carnal activity.
In truth, however, none of the stars - among them Shia Labeouf, Jamie Bell, Uma Thurman and Willem Dafoe - have sex in this frank, visceral feature, even though it may appear that they are.

If you like your thrillers with a dash of Cusack (see: The Raven), you’re in luck this August. The Frozen Ground, out August 23 both in theaters and on demand, casts the Hollywood A-lister in the dark role of real-life serial killer Richard Hansen, who abducted, raped, tortured and murdered between 17-21 women near Anchorage, Alaska, between 1980 and 1983.
The thriller also stars Nicolas Cage as Jack Halcombe, the haunted detective determined to find evidence to incriminate the elusive Hansen before any more young women die. Former Disney starlet Vanessa Hudgens co-stars in the gritty role of Cindy Paulson, a young stripper who escapes Hansen’s clutches and attempts to help Halcombe bring down the killer outside the boundaries of the law when the Anchorage police department dismisses her claims.
It appears that the film will be taking some serious liberties with the history of the case; the detective’s name was Glenn Flothe,...

When Kelly Osbourne unexpectedly brought her Pomeranian Sid to a Los Angeles fashion shoot for Maniac Magazine in July, photographer April Hubal took a cue from Project Runway's Tim Gunn and made it work! "I just said, 'Let me get some shots of the dog, because I'm a huge animal lover,'" says Hubal, who is also the online magazine's editor in chief. "She had a hat for herself that she put on the dog - she was just so cute with him." While Osbourne got glam in a stunning Chanel gown for one shot, Sid actually put the Fashion Police host to work,...

With the fall film festival right around the corner, a mountain of new acquisitions will likely kick off, but some studios are getting the jump early. After picking up Ramin Bahrani‘s Tiff and Venice title At Any Price ahead of its premiere, Sony Pictures Classics has went ahead and done the same for Robert Redford‘s next film, The Company You Keep. [THR]
Also starring Redford, the film follows “a young journalist (Shia Labeouf) who stumbles upon the story of his career when he uncovers the identity of a wanted ex-radical activist (Redford) who has been underground for five decades.” With a stellar enemble of Susan Sarandon, Terrence Howard, Julie Christie, Sam Elliott, Brendan Gleeson, Richard Jenkins, Anna Kendrick, Stanley Tucci, Chris Cooper and Nick Nolte, one can hopefully to expect this in theaters by year’s end.

Shia Labeouf, perhaps tired of having film critics make fun of him in the "Transformer" movies, takes aim at those stodgy cinema scholars in a short film he directed called "Howard Cantour.com" which will premiere at Cannes during, surprise, surprise, Critics Week!
Previously, Labeouf has directed the short film "Maniac" with Kid Cudi, and also directed the rapper's music video for "Marijuana."
Labeouf is attending the Cannes Film Festival, not only for "Howard Cantour.com" but also for "Lawless" which will have its world premiere at the fest. Based on Matt Bondurant's "The Wettest County in the World," "Lawless" tells the tale of three brothers (Labeouf, Tom Hardy, and Jason Clarke) who turned to bootlegging during the Depression-ear in Virginia. It's a star-studded Weinstein affair which also feature Gary Oldman, Guy Pearce, Jessica Chastain, and Mia Wasikowska. Directed by John Hillcoat ("The Road"), "Lawless" arrives in U.S.

Shia Labeouf is already heading to the Cannes Film Festival for the world premiere of "Lawless," so why shouldn't he also debut his new short film there? The actor directed "Howard Cantour.com," which will premiere during Critics Week at Cannes.
This isn't the first time Labeouf has stepped behind the camera. He directed the short film "Maniac" with Kid Cudi in 2011 and also helmed Cudi's video for "Marijuana." Comedian Jim Gaffigan stars in "Howard Cantour.com," which THR.com describes as Labeouf's "own quirky critique of film critics."
Having the outspoken Labeouf back at Cannes could provide a boon for journalists attending the prestigious fest. When the young actor was there in 2010, he made waves by slamming "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," which premiered at Cannes in 2008.
"I think the audience is pretty intelligent. I think they know when you've made ... . And I think if you don't acknowledge it,...

A week from today, the 65th annual Cannes Film Festival will be getting underway on the south coast of France, opening with Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom," and as ever, it's possibly the biggest date in the cinephile calendar, with a host of hotly anticipated films set to premiere over the ten days that follow. A jury headed up by Nanni Moretti, and also including Andrea Arnold, Ewan McGregor, Alexander Payne, Diane Kruger and Jean-Paul Gaultier will have to decide which of over twenty films to award the Palme d'Or to. But while the In Competition category will be typically fierce in competition, there's plenty of gems to find in the Directors' Fortnight, Un Certain Regard and Critics' Week sidebars too.

Rapper Kid Cudi moonlights as an actor every now and then, most recently popping up in a regular role on the (sadly) now-defunct HBO series "How To Make It In America" but it looks like he's also a keen cinephile, sampling Joe Cornish's "Attack The Block" on his latest track, a collaboration with producer Dot da Genius.
The lengthily-titled "Dennis, Hook Me Up With Some Of That Whiskey" opens with a quote from John Boyega's Moses ("Kill 'em, kill all dem fings") before sliding in another one from Alex Esmail's Pest about half way through ("That's an alien bruv, believe it!"). We're not sure what the significance of it is (other than a cool reference) with a glance over the lyrics providing no further insight. A short clip of Barack Obama crooning Al Green ("Those guys didn't think I was going to do it...") is also added for good measure.

Alexandre Aja, who was once circling a remake of Stephen King’s Pet Semetary, has now found himself attached to direct a Mandalay Pictures adaptation of a book written by King’s son, Joe Hill.
The novel is Horns, and it follows a 26 year old guy wonderfully named Ig Perrish who awakens from a black-out hangover to find that he has thorns coming out of his head, Hellboy style. They are growing too, as Ig sets out to discover who murdered his girlfriend and whether that has a relation to the horns that are coming out of his head which make people confess their darkest secrets. I haven’t read the novel but the reviews say it is one that conjures up amazing images and Aja has a track record in this department so he seems like a good choice.
Aja is a french filmmaker who has devoted his career to horror.

What would happen if you woke up after a big night of partying with a massive hangover, a dead girlfriend and two horns on your head? We'll soon find out when Stephen King's son, Joe Hill's, novel Horns is brought for the big screen by Piranha 3D director Alexandre Aja. Adapted by screenwriter Scott Bunin, the film is being set up at Mandate Pictures [1] with hopes that Aja can direct it by summer 2012 before moving onto a sci-fi manga inspired film called Cobra. Read more after the jump. The Hollywood Reporter [2] broke the news of Aja coming on board the project, which is centered on a book published in 2010. A few months back, Shia Labeouf was interested [3] in both playing the lead and producing, but the latest report doesn't mention his name. Here's the Amazon description [4] of Horns. From Rapfix: In June Kid Cudi previewed the trailer for his horror short “Maniac” and just as promised, Mr. Rager dropped the full-length video in time to close out the Halloween festivities. The chilling 10-minute clip is directed by his actor pal Shia Labeouf who is also responsible for the vision behind his “Marijuana” video. The mini horror film was inspired by the track “Maniac” on Cudi’s sophomore album Man On The Moon II: The Legend Of Mr. Rager and the song’s featured rapper Cage stars alongside him in the new clip.

Shia Labeouf wants to become a director. In the meantime, he's steadily become that actor no one will admit to liking -- with a history of homewrecking, barfighting, and "bizzare, water-spitting meltdowns" that make judging his work a hairy proposition. Take his latest directorial project, "Maniac," starring Kid Cudi. It's possible we're blinded by the downfall of our once-favorite Disney kid, and "Maniac" is neither unimaginative nor stupidly violent like we think it is after having seen it, but then again, it's also possible it's both, and we're right, and Shia Labeouf being a douchebag has led to his movies being douchebags. Lots of things are possible, really! But our job is to assess, and our assessment is "Maniac" suffers from the same problems as its creator.

Shia Labeouf: actor, street fighter and director, too. The temperamental star has been making headway into a directing career, and in the past year has delivered the Alejandro Jodorowsky-inspired "Born Villain" with collaborator Marilyn Manson, as well as the video "Marijuana" for Kid Cudi. Well, Labeouf has reteamed with rapper for another, uh, cinematic journey. Appropriately entitled "Maniac," this 10-minute short is more or less a remake of "Man Bites Dog," the notorious French faux-documentary that followed the exploits of a serial killer. What he really wants to do is direct. It's true; "Transformers" star Shia Labeouf has saddled into the director's seat.
His short film, "Maniac," stars Scott Mescudi and Chris Palko, and tells the story of a film crew that follows two serial killers documenting their exploits. Dark may be an understatement here. The story opens Tarantino-style, with our killers chowing down at a diner while planning their night's ... uh ... "work." By minute two the first two victims are brutally murdered. By minute four the next two go down. And so on and so on.
Like a bad car wreck, it's hard to look away (which might mean it's ... good?) but it's definitely not for the faint of heart. Check it out, if you dare, courtesy of Bloody Disgusting. Just don't say we didn't warn you.

I couldn't think of an odder pairing than Shia Labeouf and Marilyn Manson. But as Labeouf tells MTV, the two have developed a genuine friendship after Labeouf casually approached the shock rocker while at a concert watching the rock band The Kills. Here are Labeouf's thoughts on the experience: This, for me, this is a really cool diversion for me when I'm not making a movie. It gives me an opportunity to work with musicians I admire who I would otherwise never get to work with in any other capacity. I really have a fun time doing it. Other than control his alcohol-enhanced anger issues, is there anything Shia Laboeuf can't do? First, he directed a few music videos for Kid Cudi and Maniac, and now he's behind this unsurprisingly dark music video for Marilyn Manson. First reactions to the song and video are that it's a little try-hard, with the same-old same-old violent imagery and Alejandro Jodorowsky influences. Laboeuf said to MTV: "The song has all these references to Macbeth and all this Shakespeare and heavy theology, so we tried to make Manson's Un Chien Andalou [into] macabre Macbeth — that's sort of what that became." I'll admit, it did make me wince a little, but not at the creepy clown girl or people seemingly sewn together or the needle going in and out of that girl's cheek (spoiler alert?) — mostly, it was just that part at the [...]...

From the outside looking in, the friendship and working partnership that actor Shia Labeouf and rapper Kid Cudi have established recently seems only slightly unlikely. However, upon closer examination of Cudi's track record in working with Hollywood types, and Labeouf's relationship with "Maniac" featured performer Cage, their collaborations on two of Cudi's videos, "Maniac" and "Marijuana," isn't that unexpected.
When MTV News caught up with Labeouf recently as he promoted "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," we asked the aspiring director how the Cudi/Cage/Labeouf magic began with music, and how it ended with a trip to Amsterdam's infamous Cannabis Cup.
"[Cage] is one of my good friends. Cage, Chris Palko, and I had been trying to make a...

The lonely stoner may have quit smoking herb, but Kid Cudi's latest video, "Marijuana," will always serve as a reminder of his high times. The clip, which was shot and directed by Cudder's actor pal Shia Labeouf, was filmed in Amsterdam back in 2010 when Cudi served as a judge for the Cannabis Cup.
Labeouf originally reached out to Cudi through their mutual friend Cage because he wanted to shoot a short film centered around "Maniac," a song on Cudi's second album, Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager.
"While we were brainstorming that, I had the gig to perform in Amsterdam. I was thinking about ways to do a video for 'Marijuana' because I knew I wanted to...

Kid Cudi) fans who aren't feeling his ambitious-but-possibly-disastrous foray into rock, I give you the video for "Marijuana," off Cudi's second album, Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager, directed, shot, and edited by the eagle eye of Shia Labeouf, who became a fan after listening to "Day N' Night." Labeouf will also be directing a short film of Cudi's "Maniac," featuring Cage, off the same album. If you look closely, you can spot the director making a couple Hitchcockian cameos in the video. The timing of the video is interesting, when you consider that Cudi announced on his tumblr on April 1 that he had had a good run and was happy being sober, claiming it wasn't a joke. The video starts off with a little mariachi, and [...]...
