“It hurts to turn the radio on
Stamina’s gone
My spirit is weak
Because every time I start to move on
Keep hearing that song
I’m brought to my knees”
-“Now or Never Now” by Metric
Although not selected for the phenomenal soundtrack for Ned Benson’s follow-up to his similarly themed The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, Metric’s “Now or Never Now” nearly sums up the plot of his oft-sublime The Greatest Hits. Harriet (Lucy Boynton), a librarian mourning the loss of her boyfriend Max (David Corenswet), is triggered by songs that marked their relationship. An obsessive cataloger (a great quality for a librarian), she has mapped-out the trajectory of their relationships in songs and memorabilia that she accesses in a controlled environment. For the rest of her life there are noise-canceling headphones that she uses to block out songs that send her back into the past.

“‘I’ll Show You Mine’ was made to engage in an entertaining way with universal themes–sexuality, the effects of trauma, and the need to release the shame that holds us back. It’s a deeply hopeful film that I think will really resonate with audiences and I just couldn’t be more excited...

Poorna Jagannathan and Casey Thomas Brown are starring in Megan Griffiths’ “I’ll Show You Mine.”

Thomas Haden Church will star in and executive produce the multi-cam comedy “The Texanist” currently in development at Fox.
The series, which Variety exclusively reported was in development back in January, is innspired by the long-running Texas Monthly column of the same name. It centers on Dave (Church), an opinionated Austin-area radio show host who calls ‘em like he sees ‘em, dispensing advice to Texas natives and newcomers, alike, on what he knows to be the true Texas Way of life. But the Texas Way is changing, and now Dave’s job is becoming much more complicated. Listening to advice from his wife, family and co-workers, Dave must now become the arbiter of which changes to embrace and which to reject, possibly opening his mind in the process.
Should the project go to series, it would mark a return to multi-cam broadcast comedy for Church, who broke out during his...

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise may have transformed Johnny Depp‘s entire career in 2003 and turned one of independent cinema’s most eccentric leading lights into an A-list movie star, but over the course of the last decade, a series of subpar Pirates sequels, box office bombs and critically-panned efforts have seen his star fade dramatically.

The unexpected loss of Lynn Shelton is a devastating blow to the independent film community, where the multi-hyphenate filmmaker cut her teeth before blossoming beyond her roots to become a voice who helped shape the Golden Age of TV. The news of her death, caused by an undiagnosed blood disorder, was shared by her creative and romantic partner Marc Maron, and, at the age of 54, Shelton was still very much in her prime. Her most recent project was directing four episodes of Hulu’s “Little Fires Everywhere,” and as revealed in an IndieWire interview earlier in May, the “Humpday” and “Your Sister’s Sister” director was at work on a new film project with Maron while in quarantine.
IndieWire has reached out to members of the independent film community asking for their thoughts on why Shelton and her work meant so much to them. Those responses are shared below as they come in,...

War can be waged on many fronts, but don’t overlook or underestimate the subtle, but deadly psychological warfare campaign fought by a profoundly disaffected teenage girl. These notions clash and resistance are one of the ideas explored in “Sadie,” a troubled, coming of age trailer park drama from writer/director Megan Griffiths (“The Night Stalker,” “Lucky Them“) bolstered by an unnervingly cold, but breakout performance by Sophia Mitri Schloss.

While on its surface, Sadie is not an explicitly political film about the present American condition, it is a story of the “forgotten men and women” hidden from the public eye in various social contexts. Following a troubled young woman who may one day become a problem society will deal with the only way it knows how–branding her a monster and putting her in a state prison–Megan Griffiths’ film could be read as an origin story. But if there’s a silver lining to this tragedy, it’s that there’s some small level of intervention from adults to prevent this possibility, even if they never know quite what to say to help.
12-year old Sadie (played brilliantly by Sophia Mitri Scholoss) spends her days roaming around the scrap yards that flank her trailer park. Her seemingly only friend is her younger neighbor, Francis (Keith L. Williams), and his grandfather.

No one is happy in the hazy, dank world of Megan Griffiths’ trailer-park drama, “Sadie.” But no one is as compelling in their discontent as the eponymous lead, an outcast 13-year-old played by breakout star Sophia Mitri Schloss. Unhappy with her lot in life, she’s ignored at nearly every turn, only finding solace in her doting mother Rae (Melanie Lynskey) and her long-time best pal Francis (Keith L. Williams).
However, Sadie’s fragile existence is made worse by the protracted absence of her father. A daddy’s girl through and through, Sadie is convinced that her soldier dad is the only one who really understands her — not only with their shared interest in gory horror movies, military strategy, and sensible flak jackets, but also in emotions and worldview. That her father has been out of the country and her life, for years (save for his bi-monthly letters) stings Sadie,...

That storyline was Night Witches, and the threats now being levelled against Varvara, the Russian witch who helped Peter and Inspector Nightingale solve that case. With ratings falling to an alarming level, major changes are going be made in WWE if they want to turn things around in 2016. New wrestlers will have to be signed, Nxt wrestlers will called up, and some veterans are going to have to go. It’s an unfortunate fact of wrestling life, but when Vince McMahon thinks that someone isn’t earning their keep, they’re not long for the main roster.
It’s been a long time since we’ve had a big house cleaning in WWE, but with ratings rapidly falling, the boss is going to look for someone to blame. He’s certainly not going to blame himself, or his daughter, or his son-in-law, which basically leaves the wrestlers to have to find a new place of employment. Lucky them.

The protagonist of Lucky Them, music critic Ellie Klug, is one of those all-too-rare female antiheroes who makes the kinds of chronic mistakes traditionally associated with men in the movies: she drinks too much, sleeps around (and with members of the opposite sex who are often much younger than she is), and is on the verge of getting fired from her job. It’s almost weirdly empowering to see a woman onscreen who so unabashedly embraces being a screw-up. You could argue that much of her borderline destructive behavior is filling the void left by the disappearance of Matthew Smith, indie music icon and love of her life, but Ellie manages to come across as far more complicated than that--probably because she is played by Toni Collette, who instantly brings an extra layer of human complexity to every role she takes on. Here, she takes the stereotypically “unlikable” character of...

It’s a pretty rare thing that a director has the opportunity to watch other directors at work. As a crew-member, I had a front row seat to almost every aspect of the job, pre-production through post. I never worked on a film that didn’t teach me something—whether it fell in the “to emulate” or “to avoid at all costs” column. These lessons helped me direct actors, assemble good crews, communicate effectively, have realistic expectations, and generally feel at home on a film set.
A little about me: In the past four years, I have directed three features (The Off Hours, Eden and Lucky Them) and been a co-, exec-, consulting, or straight-up producer on four others (The Catechism Cataclysm, Your Sister’s Sister, Koinonia and The Greens Are Gone). If the Seattle film scene burst into the national consciousness in 2009 with Lynn Shelton’s “Humpday,” it’s the rest of the vibrant community that has given it longevity. “One filmmaker coming out of Seattle is like, ‘Oh look!’ ” says Alycia Delmore, a Seattle actor who starred in “Humpday.” “But now that it’s more people and it’s this heavy base of female directors and producers, I think that now we’re a community as opposed to a band of people who work with Lynn Shelton.” Among them are director Megan Griffiths (“The Off Hours”)—recently represented at Tribeca Film Festival with “Lucky Them,” starring Toni Collette—and producer Mel Eslyn, who continues to advocate for Seattle even as she finds success elsewhere, most recently with the festival circuit favorite “The One I Love,” starring Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss. “The heart of it comes from a personal preference,...

This first-ever Greenwich International Film Festival (Giff) is coming next June and will showcase over 25 films, world premieres, parties and an award ceremony. Created by Carina Crain, Colleen deVeer, and Wendy Stapleton Reyes, the Connecticut festival will use its downtown areas to show the best in film. Although the lineup has yet to be announced, Giff will have exciting events that will take place throughout the year, including a screening of Emily Wachtel’s comedy film "Lucky Them," directed by Megan Griffiths. A Q&A with the filmmakers will be held on June 16th at Avon Theatre in Stamford, Ct. “The possibilities for the Greenwich International Film Festival are limitless," said Founders Carina Crain, Colleen deVeer and Wendy Stapleton Reyes. "It is our goal that the Festival will build a reputation for the caliber of films we showcase and the unique charitable aspect that we will bring to the forefront each year.

Editor's Note: This post is presented in partnership with Time Warner Cable Movies On Demand in support of May's Indie Film Month. "Lucky Them" is currently available to view On Demand. Chances are you probably know Toni Collette as an Australian Oscar-nominated actress, and not as a singer-songwriter. As it turns out, she has one album under her belt titled "Beautiful Awkward Pictures," that she released in 2006 and recorded with her husband, musician Dave Galafassi. Her latest film, "Lucky Them," sees Collette fuse her two passions to play Ellie Kung, a middle-aged music journalist assigned to track down the rumored-to-be-dead rock legend who broke her heart years ago. The film opens in select theaters May 30 and is currently available to view on video-on-demand platforms. Collette sat down with Indiewire recently in New York to discuss her passion for music, and why she doesn't consider herself to be a movie star.

Critics complaining about formulaic popular films actually have some ammunition these days, thanks to the popularity of the late Blake Snyder's screenplay template, outlined in his best-seller Save the Cat.
Director Megan Griffiths's smart, nimble Lucky Them both validates Snyder in its adherence to his template, and breaks with him by jettisoning his most commercial advice and making the protagonist an older woman instead of a young dude. Ellie Klug (ass-kicking Toni Collette) is an eye-rolling, whiskey-swilling rock journalist who once dated musician Matthew Smith, a kind of Kurt Cobain figure revered by aging, tubby Gen-Xers.

"Cinematography is kind of a hidden art, even though it's the most visible. It's mysterious," said film critic Eric Hynes in introducing Tribeca Talks Industry: Shooting the Film: An Exploration of Cinematography earlier this week. "You could attribute everything to cinematography...or nothing." Hynes was gathered with a select group of cinematographers with films at this year's Tribeca Film Festival, including Nick Bentgen ("Ballet 422," "Teenage"), Zachary Heinzerling ("Cutie and the Boxer"), Luke Geissbühler ("Match," "Beyond the Brick: A Lego Brickumentary") and Ben Kutchins ("Lucky Them") to discuss and demystify the art of cinematography -- as well as the technical side. Relying on clips from each filmmaker's work, Hynes led a discussion that ranged from filmmakers' training to how they like to collaborate with directors. Here are 4 highlights from the Masterclass: 1. So much of cinematography is about collaboration -- with the director, the actors and the crew. "I love my.

Oscar-nominated actress Toni Collette returns to the big screen in director Megan Griffiths' ("Eden," "The Off Hours") latest feature film "Lucky Them." Featuring Collette in her first major lead role in quite a few years, the music-centered dramedy will be screening at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival. "Lucky Them" sees Collette as Ellie Klug, a middle-aged journalist whose last chance at redemption seems to be in her next assignment, which involves locating the long lost rock star legend who broke her heart years ago. Tagging along with her is music-hating filmmaker Charlie, who documents Ellie's journey of (self-)discovery from beginning to end as the result of her findings may lead to the loss of her job and so much more. The trailer shows Collette lighting up the screen with her comedic flair and melancholy depth, as her search for her almost-mythical ex takes her on a journey she didn't expect.
