At various times "living on base" is mentioned. US soldiers don't live on "bases," they live on post. The US Navy, USMC, and US Air Force have bases; the US Army has forts and camps which are posts and as such soldiers and their families live "on post" when living at US Army installations.
The 21 gun salute would not have been done with the rifle on 3 round burst, that would've been a 61 gun salute.
