- A rumor about Pallavi Patel, a quintessential, middle aged, devoted housewife who is famous for her dance and cooking, threatens to disrupt her middle-class family's ethos, on the eve of her son Tejas' engagement with a rich, NRI girl.
- Pallavi Patel is the quintessential, middle aged, devoted housewife who is equally famous for her dance as she is for her cooking. But what happens when a truth about her, threatens to disrupt her middle-class family's ethos, on the eve of her son Tejas' engagement with a rich, NRI girl?
- Pallavi Patel (Madhuri Dixit) is a simple housewife living in a housing society and is famous for her cooking and dance (she teaches Garba at her dance class). Her husband, Manohar Patel (Gajraj Rao), is the chairman of the society. Kinjal (Khushi Hajare) is a little girl from some other house, who spends a lot of time with the Patels and makes videos of random events in the house.
Her daughter Tara Patel Adhia (Srishti Shrivastava) is pursuing PhD in sexuality and gender importance. She is also a huge supporter of the LGBTQIA+ group. Tara is married to Pinakin Adhia (Malhar Thakar) who lives with Kanchan Adhia (Simone Singh), Tara's mother-in-law & father-in-law Moolchand (Ninad Kamat). Due to her work Tara spends a lot of time away from Pinakin and his mother. Tara feels Pallavi is not supportive of her work. She feels Pallavi is against the LGBTQIA rights movement as well, and if Tara was a lesbian, she would not accept her. Tara keeps pushing Pallavi on this point, and Pallavi relents saying that she herself is a lesbian. Tara feels Pallavi is only using reverse psychology, but it was a deeply disturbing event for Pallavi.
Her son Tejas Patel (Ritwik Bhowmik), who lives in America, is in love with Esha Hansraj (Barkha Singh). Esha lives with her parents Bob (Rajit Kapoor) & Pam Hansraj (Sheeba Chaddha). Bob is a millionaire. Bob and Pam subject Tejas to a lie detector test. Tejas passes with flying colors. Pam tries to be cool with her daughter, but deep down she is a conservative Indian mother. Next Bob wants to meet Tejas's family. They decide to travel to Gujrat to meet the Patels. Tejas is nervous since they are a middle-class family with creaking fans, peeling paint and dusty murals on the wall.
The Hansraj's are staying with the Patels during the course of their visit. Bob is crushing on Pallavi. While Pam is ultra-orthodox and checks with Tara is she is having her periods (as it is unhygienic to be in the kitchen during those days). She reveals that they like Tejas since he is a virgin. Manohar is a simpleton and takes everything as a compliment for the sake of Tejas.
Kinjal shares some videos with Viral (Kavin Dave), just before Garba night. Viral is Manohar's rival at the society elections, and always loses due to Pallavi's popularity. Viral realizes that one of the videos is of Pallavi admitting to Tara that she is a lesbian. Viral gets Kinjal to show the videos as a montage at the end of Garba night. Pallavi is shocked & says this is all a misunderstanding. The Hansraj's leave for the hotel. This is when Pinakin and Kanchan arrive at the Patels.
Tara wants to know the truth and corners Pallavi when she is alone. Pallavi wont admit anything and just walks away from Tara. Tara suspects Pallavi is a Lesbian. By next morning, social media is full of a song based on Pallavi's admission and the society begins to shun her. Pressure builds on Pallavi to give a public statement. Bob wants Pallavi to take a lie detector test. Tejas is fine with it since he knows Pallavi has nothing to hide. She herself is not super enthusiastic about the idea. Bob invites the Patels to a palace function, since the press release for the same had gone out already. Moolchand tells Manohar that Kanchan has blood cancer.
Tara wants Pallavi to come out of the closet, while Tejas simply wants Pallavi to take the lie detector test so they can move ahead with the wedding between Tejas and Esha. At the palace event, Pallavi apologizes to Bob and Pam, but Bob insists on the lie detector test. Pallavi walks away. In a secluded part of the palace Kanchan meets Pallavi and it is indicated that Pallavi and Kanchan loved each other long back (they had even shared a kiss on Dandiya night). They were supposed to elope, but Pallavi abandoned Kanchan for the sake of society. Tejas sees this exchange.
Tejas goes back to Esha and tells her that the lie detector test is off, since he didn't think it through. Tejas won't reveal that he knows Pallavi is a lesbian. Esha convinces him to let the test go ahead else Bob will believe that Pallavi is a lesbian. Tara meanwhile suspects that Pallavi is still living in the closet and wants her to declare that she is a lesbian. She says it's better that she admits, else the lie detector will make a mockery of her. Pallavi is afraid that the family will scatter with her truth. Tejas wanted to take Pallavi alone for a day, but Tara overhears his plans and converts it into a family picnic with the Patels and the Hansraj's. Tejas manages to separate Pallavi from the group and takes her to a Tantrik who claims to remove the gay "illness". Pallavi is offended and leaves. Tejas yells that he knows about Pallavi and Kanchan having an affair back in the day.
On the way back, Kanchan, Pam and Pallavi are travelling alone when Pam starts making fun of lesbians. Kanchan decides to give back and says that Bob was ogling at Kanchan the entire trip in front of Pam, and she didn't say anything. Before that he was hitting on Pallavi. She tells Pam that even she is not happy in the marriage with Bob, and if she doesn't stop him, Esha will end up with a Bob 2.0. Meanwhile Manohar is jolted by the drama around Pallavi and takes drugs to enhance his sexual performance, which lands him in hospital. Manohar asks Pallavi if she was happy with him. Pallavi says she could not love him but was a faithful friend and wife. She admits she is a lesbian though. Manohar is deeply hurt.
Then Pallavi sees Moolchand giving cancer medicines to Kanchan, and her hair all gone. Pallavi is hurt and now feels lonely. Pallavi decides it's time to confront the truth and appear for Bob's lie detector test. Bob asks very uncomfortable questions about being lesbian, liking sex with her husband, having physical relations with another man, with another woman, kissing another woman and so on. Pallavi answers truthfully to the extent that Pam has had enough and tells Bob to stop. She says even Bob hasn't kissed her in years and that does not mean that he is gay. She pleads him to stop as Tejas is a nice boy and Bob's negativity will drive the family away. Pallavi and Tejas return home.
Tejas goes back to Esha the next day and says he wants to break off the engagement. He tells Bob that he is a middle-class guy, but he needs to stand with his mom. He doesn't think he will be a good husband, when he was not able to be a good son. Esha is heartbroken. Manohar refuses to submit the lie detector test report to the society. He warns viral that he won't hear a single word against Pallavi and will resign the position at the society, if that's what it takes to defend her honor. Manohar returns home and tells Pallavi that he will be a better friend and a husband to Pallavi from now on. Pallavi takes the family out for Garba night. Esha comes there and tells Tejas, that she won't leave him no matter what. They decide to figure him out together. Pallavi and Kanchan admit their feelings for each other and promise to be together in their next life.
