Kevin Hart, known for starring in comedic films, has taken his fan base by surprise with his latest film! The actor has recently branched out by moving beyond just comedies, which have so far served as the backbone of his acting career. Although films like The Upside and The Man From Toronto have had Hart before in slightly less comedy-centric roles, the actor-comedian has never before starred in a film where his role as the lead marked a shift as significant as Ryan Reynold’s Magnet S. Johnson in 6 Underground. Directed by F.Gary Gray, and written by Daniel Kunka, Hart’s...

Flashback: The #1 grossing film for January 2023 was “Avatar: The Way of Water.” In January 2022, it was “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Both films were #1 on the last weekend of the month as well as the first.
Contrast that with “Wonka” (Warner Bros.), which is a clear success headed for a worldwide gross of over $500 million — but isn’t remotely in the same league. That explains why January is more than 20 percent below last year, but this month has a chance to succeed if it does something entirely different.
Yes, 2024 needs franchise titles and sequels to carry their weight; “Dune Part 2,” “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” all arrive in March. However, to rise above the year’s grim $8 billion projection for domestic gross (down 12 percent from 2023), a whole slew of standalone titles must thrive.

Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake is exiting the studio. He’ll hand the reins to Adam Fogelson, who formerly lead both Universal Pictures and STX Motion Picture Group; Fogelson joined Lionsgate’s film group in 2022 as vice chair. This is now the third studio Fogelson will lead dating back to 2009.
Drake returned to Lionsgate in 2017 after starting Good Universe Pictures, which Lionsgate acquired from Drake. He most recently oversaw Lionsgate’s first $1 billion year at the global box office since 2019, thanks in large part to new “John Wick,” “Hunger Games,” and “Saw” films. Drake also oversaw the successes of “Knives Out,” “Jesus Revolution,” “Shotgun Wedding,” and more.
Fogelson and Drake will continue to work together over the next couple of months.

Lionsgate has tapped Adam Fogelson to succeed Joe Drake as chair of its movie division.
It’s understood Drake initiated the transition as he works with Fogelson — currently vice chair of the Motion Picture Group and overseeing the worldwide marketing and theatrical distribution — over the coming months to ensure a smooth succession.
Former STX Film chief Fogelson joined Lionsgate in September 2022 and reported to Drake, chair of the studio’s Motion Picture Group. His move to Lionsgate followed the Hollywood studio exploring a possible takeover of STX, a deal that didn’t come to pass.
Drake rejoined Lionsgate in 2017 after running Good Universe Pictures, the second company acquired by Lionsgate from Drake. He reentered a studio different from the one he left in 2012, as Lionsgate had moved beyond its hit Hunger Games and Twilight franchises to leverage a diversified portfolio of film and TV properties across multiple platforms, especially after acquiring Starz.

When you think about it, "Frasier" is one of the most unlikely success stories in TV history. Running from 1993 to 2004, the show is one of the most beloved sitcoms of all time and has recently returned some 20 years after it went off-air for a revival series currently streaming on Paramount+.
But a lot had to happen in order for this impressive multi-decade run to pan out. After the show on which Frasier Crane first debuted, "Cheers," almost crashed and burned during its first season, it went on to become the most celebrated sitcom of the '80s and still enjoys a legacy as one of the finest TV shows ever. In season 3 of the series, we were introduced to Dr. Crane for the first time. Originally intended to be a character that appeared in a few episodes as a way to further the will-they-won't-they romance storyline between Ted Danson's...

Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer, who are known as the Duffer Brothers, are shooting down a theory about the series finale.
After five seasons of fighting demons from The Upside-Down, the Netflix sci-fi series is coming to an end. The show’s fifth and final season was delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes and fans have been speculating about how the series will conclude.
One theory that has been circling among the most die-hard fans of the show is that none of the events have ever existed. The theory relies on the main characters playing a big, long and convoluted game of Dungeons and Dragons.
“That is correct. That is the ending…. No,” Matt jokingly told Metro at the West End premiere of Stranger Things: The First Shadow about the fan theory.
Ross added, “That would be the equivalent of, ‘That’s all a dream.

Scripted TV series based on the Jennifer Lopez film “Hustlers” and the Mila Kunis comedy “Bad Moms” will soon be put into development as part of a new distribution agreement between STXfilms and Lionsgate, the companies announced Wednesday.

It’s summer time on Hulu and that can only mean one thing. With its list of new releases for June 2023, Hulu is bringing back last summer’s unexpected hit.

This time around, Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) and friends will attempt a major foodie rebrand. The only other Hulu series of note this month is the docuseries The Age of Influence. Premiering on June 5, this doc will examine the dark side of influencer culture.

Season 2 of last summer’s hit breakout series “The Bear” is set to premiere on Hulu on Thursday, June 22. After a tumultuous return to his family’s hole-in-the-wall Chicago restaurant, chef Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) and his staff transform the greasy sandwich joint into a first-class dining experience after he discovers the slush fund his brother left behind. Despite having the extra money to make his dreams a reality, the future proves to be both a personal and professional challenge for Carmy and the crew.
Watch the trailer for Season 2 of “The Bear”:
Beginning on June 14, the new series continuation of the beloved film “The Full Monty” arrives on Hulu. It’s 25 years later and the men and women of Sheffield, England, are in reboot mode, navigating life and family. The original 1997 movie focused on a group of down-on-their-luck, blue-collar men who put on a strip show to make ends meet.

Latin American companies have descended on the 60th LA Screenings, mindful of the ever-shifting panorama in content distribution and production.
The ongoing writers’ strike is viewed by some as a boon for international content. Take what Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos said at the company’s first quarter financials report presentation when the writers’ strike was looming: “If there’s a strike — and we want to work really hard to make sure we can find a fair and equitable deal so we can avoid one — but if there is one, we have a large base of upcoming shows and films from around the world.”
“The global market is finally realizing that Latin America, with almost 700 million inhabitants that speak the same language, is a territory that has a huge penetration in terms of Ott and – still – pay tv subscribers,” says Mexico City-based Manuel Marti, Fremantle’s head of scripted development, Latin America.

There are late bloomers and then there those who never bloom at all. Unfortunately for Lisa Steen’s feature debut “Late Bloomers,” The dramedy follows Louise (Karen Gillan), an aimless 28-year-old musician who breaks her hip while drunkenly stalking her ex. Through her injury, Louise befriends a group of elderly women at physical therapy and unwittingly becomes the caretaker to cranky Polish-speaking Antonina (Margaret Sophie Stein).
The parallels between Louise and Antonina are explained only in their shared shrugging off of polite social norms and blatant disregard for conventionality: namely, Louise is avoiding facing her ailing mother (Talia Balsam) who has Alzheimer’s and dodging calls from her scatter-brained father (Tim Nealon), while Antonina digs her heels in about moving into a retirement home. Nods to Antonina’s youth and her relationship with her own late daughter only sprout in the background of “Late Bloomers,” teasing what the film could have been.

Exclusive: Sugar23 has signed rising star Brooklynn Prince, on the heels of her new film Cocaine Bear‘s opening weekend triumph, with a current worldwide gross of $28M+ at the worldwide box office, against a production budget of roughly $30M.
The R-rated horror-comedy directed for Universal by Elizabeth Banks has broken out as one of the early success stories of 2023, affirming that original features, and those in the comedy arena, can certainly still perform in today’s marketplace. Based loosely on real events that took place in 1985, the film watches as a duffel bag’s worth of cocaine drops from a drug smuggler’s plane and winds up in a Georgia forest, becoming a favorite snack for a hulking black bear. An electric set of unfortunate souls, including Prince, Keri Russell and Christian Convery, are then subject to the animal’s murderous rampage.

Die Hart: The Movie is a comedy movie directed by Eric Appel
Kevin Hart pokes fun at his supporting role in action movies and signs up for an action actor’s school with John Travolta as his instructor.
Funny… but only just
And if we were worse people we’d say it’s almost close to a B-movie that doesn’t deserve its stars.
With John Travolta, Nathalie Emmanuel, Josh Hartnett and Jean Reno.
Movie Review
A film that looks promising but disappoints you very quickly.
It barely holds up for the first ten or fifteen minutes, when Hart is interviewed. Then, it becomes not much or even just nothing at all, an anecdotal film, video-club fodder in bygone times, one of those movies that no one had heard of and that were rented without thinking too much about it and from which little was expected anyway.
Other than someone learning what Chrome Keying is…...

Bryan Cranston starred alongside Kevin Hart in the 2017 dramedy “The Upside,” based on the true story of a paralyzed billionaire who befriends a recently paroled convict and hires him as a caretaker. Appearing on Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast, Cranston revealed that the story isn’t yet over, as he and Hart are working on a follow-up film.
“We’re doing a sequel to it,” Cranston said in an episode that will premiere on Jan. 30.
With a 37 million budget, “The Upside” grossed 125 million at the box office, and marked comedian Hart’s first significant dramatic role. But despite its commercial success, Cranston said he “got shit” for playing a quadriplegic in the movie.
“I got a lot of shit for that,” he said. “I am an able-bodied actor playing a disabled actor.”
Maher responded, “I mean, it’s called acting. It’s almost the whole point, that you are...

By the middle of the past decade, Kevin Hart had climbed about as high up the comedy mountaintop as it was possible to go, reliably filling arenas, releasing top-ranked Netflix specials and pumping out No. 1 box office hits like The Upside and Ride Along. But for Hart, getting rich and famous was just the first step to getting even wealthier.
Stardom today is a commodity, more monetizable than ever, and few have figured out how to leverage it more effectively than Hart, who in parallel with his comedy career has built a business empire so diversified, it’s nearly impossible to categorize, ranging from film and TV to health and fitness, consumer packaged goods, spirits, sportswear, fintech and biotech. Seemingly every A-lister has a production company, plenty shill for brands (care for a Nespresso?), a select few have built successful ones of their own (Casamigos,...

STX is shuttering its UK operation, we understand, with most staff currently in consultation about their options. There will be a number of layoffs.
STX declined comment on the situation, which by our estimate could impact at least a dozen employees.
When it opened in 2017, STX’s impressive and large London office was a talking point among UK distributors. The studio always struggled to fill the vast top-floor space on the Strand and it seems that the overhead and expense of UK distribution is no longer viable.

The Duffer Brothers are getting ready to turn Netflix upside down.
After engineering another smash-hit season of Stranger Things, the fraternal showrunners have announced Upside Down Pictures, a production company that already has at least five different projects in development. The new studio is a partnership between The Duffer Brothers and Hilary Leavitt, who is perhaps best known for producing the award-winning BBC America series Orphan Black.
Unsurprisingly, two of the Upside Down projects revealed thus far are set in the Stranger Things universe. The Duffer Brothers will work with Tony winner Stephen Daldry to create a stage play inspired by the show that made them famous. They are also planning a live-action Stranger Things spinoff, which is purportedly based on an original idea.

Borrowing the company name from their juggernaut series, The Duffers will continue to lean into the formula that has been a propulsive force in Stranger Things. Omar Sy has been on the rise since 2011 when he starred in the French comedic drama "The Intouchables." The success of that film led to an American remake starring Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston called "The Upside," but Sy went on to appear in Hollywood blockbusters like "X-Men: Days of Future Past," "Jurassic World," and "Transformers: The Last Knight."
But beyond the bright lights of Tinseltown, the actor/comedian continued to shine on a global scale. Though he would still appear in US projects like "Jurassic World: Dominion," Sy would earn the world's attention with Netflix's French-language heist series "Lupin." This leading role...

HBO Max is getting into business with Omar Sy.
The star of Netflix’s Lupin has struck a first look television deal with the Warner Bros. Discovery streamer.
He will develop international series with the digital platform including shows out of France.
It comes after Sy, who operates his own Paris and LA-based production company Korokoro, struck a multi-year film deal with Netflix last year.
Sy broke out with his performance in French film The Intouchables, which was remade in the U.S. as The Upside starring Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston, before becoming a global success with French crime thriller series Lupin. The series has run for ten episodes and has been renewed for a third chapter, starring Sy as Assane Diop, a man inspired by the adventures of master thief Arsene Lupin. His latest film Father and Soldier debuted at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and he...

STX Entertainment will remain an independent film studio as the private investment firm The Najafi Companies has now closed the deal to acquire Robert Simonds’ studio from Eros International, the companies announced Friday.
Simonds will serve as STX chairman and Noah Fogelson, currently the president, will become the new CEO.
Adam Fogelson will continue to serve as chairman of the Motion Picture Group, Andrew Warren will continue as CFO, and John Friedberg will continue overseeing the international and acquisitions divisions for the motion picture group out of the company’s London office.
The studio behind “Bad Moms,” “Hustlers” and “Greenland” was sold to The Najafi Companies last December in a 173 million deal. However, it included a 45-day “go-shop” period in which Lionsgate explored a last minute acquisition of its own of STX. As previously reported by TheWrap, that deal fell through with an offer that was said to be below the 173 million offered by Najafi.

Exclusive: There’s been a lot of biting rumors around STX Entertainment during the past four months, from a potential sale to Lionsgate to possibly filing Chapter 11. These are not coming to realization as the Hustlers and Bad Moms studio now can breathe a sigh of relief, having fully closed its sale to The Najafi Companies, with Birch Grove LP and 777 Partners now also providing financing.
The Forest Road Company originally was part of the Najafi consortium in taking over STX’s debt, but it no longer is part of the revived studio going forward.
All of this puts STX Entertainment in a position to remain independent, now completely separated from Eros International, which we’ve heard has had its own financial baggage, further complicating affairs for the Burbank studio. All of this is good for the greater independent film ecosphere as STX won’t be a theatrical distributor to...
