Here we have the ceremony that went by the name "BET Awards 2011". And while there were a few awards handed out early on, the longer the show went (and boy it went for a long time) the more it turned into a concert event basically with one performance after the next and the awards component was almost completely forgotten. I mean it says it all basically that the acting winners were shown briefly in text form, but no announcement and no acceptance speech either. Entertainment includes acting as much as music, but this one was really all about the music and the one time it combined both was maybe the most cringeworthy moment of the entire night, namely when Idris Elba, a genuinely great actor, was reduced to pointless pretense during a live music performance. The one thing that is true from the title, however, is the "Black" as once again non-Blacks were shut out almost completely. The exception was Justin Bieber I guess or maybe I should say Justin Beiber as they really did manage the amazing achievement to spell incorrectly the name of pretty much the only non-Black guy during this event. The entire thing went on as usual for this ceremony for almost three hours ant it really had massive lengths, towards the end in the second half actually. Oh yeah there was a moment of controversy too involving Rihanna and Chris Brown, but actually this moment summarized the show very well. It was all fake and staged and it couldn't be any more obvious. Now that was embarrassing. I'd actually feel sorry for the guy who was given the award if I wasn't 99.9% sure he was an accomplice there in the filmmaker's desperate attempt to have people talk about it the next day and maybe already fish for ratings for the 2012 BET Awards. Final note, kinda disappointed by director Glenn Weiss giving his good name to this embarrassing ceremony. Not surprised at all though by how bad Kevin Hart's hosting was. Overall it's watchable for the first thirty minuted, but then it hits rock-bottom quickly and stays there for the rest of the thing. Highly not recommended, not even for those who love award shows as it stopped being one really quickly.
