Huh?! What in the heck did I just watch?!?!

As a teen, I was a huge fan of SCTV and watched every episode--from the early syndicated version to its move to NBC to its move to Cinemax. I also loved the spin-off film "Strange Brew" and "The Dave Thomas Show"...but I cannot recall this odd Showtime special. I only heard about it when someone mentioned it on Facebook, so I looked for it on YouTube and found it. Sadly, in hindsight, I wish I hadn't.

The story is a very low budgeted and cheesy story about a disaffected Canadian man (Dave Thomas) and his hatred of modern life. Oddly, he keeps seeing a black horse and carriage from the 19th century in modern Canada. Well, eventually he enters it and it turns out to be a time machine...taking him to a variety of time and places, such as Dickensian Britain, 18th century France and more.

The problems with all this are many. Despite starring Thomas and several of the SCTV stars, the show was amazingly unfunny. It also really seemed to be saying nothing about anything. I just kept thinking that sooner or later it would all be worth it and make sense. Nope...not really. A huge misfire and I can understand why I hadn't heard about this one! I honestly cannot imagine any but perhaps the most die-hard SCTV fans enjoying this one....if even them.
