Two of the world’s most influential women — pioneering primatologist Jane Goodall and lauded writer Joan Didion — are both on the receiving end of insightful new documentaries this year, both of which are hitting screens in the coming weeks. Brett Morgen’s “Jane” (which opened just last week to deservedly rave reviews) tracks the early years of Goodall’s work in Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park, combining both new interviews with the still-trailblazing scientist and early footage lensed by her former husband Hugo van Lawick (a celebrated animal photographer) to tell a full-bodied story about Goddall’s amazing ethic and her tremendous empathy for the animals she’s made the center of her life.
This week, Griffin Dunne’s look at Didion’s life, “Joan Didion: The Center Will Not Hold,” will arrive on Netflix, following her own early years and her current state as a literary icon. Both...

George Clooney is not particularly known for his feminism, nor his producing of television. These points are set to change, however, with news of an upcoming HBO miniseries – executive produced by Clooney, Grant Heslov and Bruce Cohen – titled Ms. The project will star Marisa Tomei as Gloria Steinem, and Kathy Najimy as Bella Azbug, and will focus specifically on the founding of the groundbreaking Ms Magazine in 1971. Steinem herself will serve as consultant on the series.
Ms Magazine is an American feminist publication which made its debut as an insert in New York Magazine in 1971. Its first full issue hit the news stands in January 1972, with its initial run having sold out in eight days. Now published by the Feminist Majority Foundation, the magazine has a rich history of being at the forefront of the feminist movement, being the first U.S publication to address the subject of domestic violence,...

The new series expands on the three-hour PBS documentary of same name, which premiered in February 2013 and told the story of the American women’s movement over the last half-century. Kathy Griffin, former CIA agent Valerie Plame, former Nasa astronaut Peggy Whitson and the producers of Makers are scheduled to discuss the project at the press tour tomorrow. Among those profiled in the docu-series are Lena Dunham, Chelsea Handler, Shonda Rhimes, and Sarah Silverman. Each of the new documentaries tackles a different sphere of influence, including business, war, space, Hollywood, politics and comedy. The 2012 Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, took place on Sunday (September 23rd). Showtime's "Homeland" won in the Best Drama category, denying "Mad Men" a record fifth consecutive win. "Modern Family" took home its third straight Best Comedy award. Julianne Moore (pictured) won for Best Actress in a Mini-Series for her portrayal of Sarah Palin in HBO's "Game Change." Moore stated: "Wow, I feel so validated because Sarah Palin gave me a big thumbs down." "The show was really structured around [Sheen's] character, so it was silly for me to be in the lead character [category]. That's changed [with Ashton Kutcher]. It's more of a partnership...
