Albert Pyun confirmed in February 2016 as a last message on Facebook and Twitter that he will retire completely from filmmaking due to dementia, saying the illness has taken control of his life. He also stated that Cyborg Nemesis: The Dark Rift will not be completed nor released. The entire movie was shot, but editing in effects, cutting and audio remain unfinished. In short, the movie has been abandoned after filming, but before post production.
The film was originally titled "Cyborg: Rise of the Slingers", but was changed to "Cyborg Nemesis".
It is unknown if this film will ever be released after director Pyun suffered from MS during post production and withdrew from the public.
The extended ending of Albert Pyun's director's cut of the original Cyborg (1989) set the stage of this film. In the extended ending of the director's cut, we cut to 9 months later and we see a electrical storm, a sphere flashes a naked woman (A cyborg) appears and a caption appears: "Next: Cyborg Nemesis: The Dark Rift". The extended ending of the director's cut ripped off and was a nod to The Terminator (1984) its sequels and the spin-off television series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008).
A prequel to the 1989 Jean-Claude Van Damme sci-fi action film "Cyborg". Albert Pyun, who directed "Cyborg", returned to direct the prequel.
