The third season of Hulu’s dystopian drama “The Handmaid’s Tale,” as showrunner Bruce Miller puts it, saw an “opportunity to do something rebellious drop in [June’s] lap.” The titular handmaid (played by Elisabeth Moss) learned about an underground network that could smuggle people out of the oppressive regime of Gilead and decided she had to be a part of plans to cause that regime to crumble from the inside.
“For June it was a combination of imagination — what could she have done? — and then execution. So much of the season was about her learning to be a rebel — what it meant on the ground, moment by moment and how you do those things and who you have to compromise with,” Miller tells Variety‘s TV Take podcast. “Becoming a rebel, and how do you actually rebel, was interesting to me because I have no idea.”

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Liars” and “Sacrifice,” the 11th and 12th episodes of the third season of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” streaming now on Hulu.
“Once upon a time, at the start of Gilead, Fred and Serena were truly intimate,” says Yvonne Strahovski. And for a brief moment, in the 11th episode of the third season of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” it seemed like they would be that way again. But, Strahovski’s Serena being as cunning as she is, and being so singularly focused of late on reuniting with baby Nichole (nee Holly), reconnecting with her husband came with an agenda.
In that 11th episode, entitled “Liars,” Serena and Fred (Joseph Fiennes) took a road trip. On their adventure he actually allowed her back behind the wheel of the car to drive for a stretch of open road, and she allowed him to be intimate with her.

“The Tower,” Mats Grorud’s animation about the plight of the Palestinians, as viewed through the eyes of an 11-year-old girl in Beirut, won the grand prize in the international competition at the 16th edition of Skip City International D-Cinema Festival. The film also scooped the section’s audience award.
The Skip City festival, which launched in 2004 to promote the then-new medium of digital cinema, played July 16-21 in Kawaguchi, a suburb of Tokyo and the site of the Skip City media complex.
In the Japanese feature film competition the best picture winner was “Sacrifice,” a drama by first-timer Taku Tsuboi that focuses on strange incidents at a college – and a female student who was once a member of a religious cult.

Round here we’re big Dave Bautista fans. It’d be one thing if he was just a surprisingly great actor, as proven in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise and Blade Runner 2049. But he put his career on the line to stand up for his friend James Gunn, which was really nice to see in an industry notoriously full of liars, false friends and backstabbers. All that’s why we’re hoping that Lucasfilm get their wish and secure his casting as Darth Bane in their latest Star Wars TV project.
It’s early days yet, but sources close to We Got This Covered have told us that the show will revolve around Bautista’s character being the last Sith survivor after the climactic Jedi-Sith Wars (which took place roughly a millennium before the Skywalker saga). Though Darth Bane hasn’t been mentioned on the big screen, he...

Derren Brown is either the greatest guest ever at parties or the one that never leaves. Either way, that’s cool with us. On Wednesday, Brown returned to James Corden’s “Late Late Show” to blow the CBS host’s mind — again.
The psychological illusionist pulled off the ultimate Sudoku puzzle, and then turned it into a slick rice trick that is impressive even when it’s Not 12:35 a.m.

That “D–k Brain” thing from our headline will make more sense when Brown recalls his high school experience. Spoiler alert: He wasn’t exactly homecoming king (assuming that’s a thing in England).

Derren Brown is amazing — and he’s also back on Netflix. The English mentalist and illusionist returns mid-month with his latest mind-f— of a special, “Sacrifice.”
The trailer, which is exclusive to TheWrap, is classic Brown mind control — especially for those stateside fans who anxiously watched “The Push.”
Unlike that 2016 release, in which Brown aimed to convince four regular people to murder a man, “Sacrifice” attempts to turn an anti-immigration everyman into a hero for one illegal alien.

A couple of months ago, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said that the official title for Avengers 4 won’t be announced until sometime near the end of this year, explaining that the Captain Marvel teaser is likely to drop first. Until then, you should probably approach any supposed reveal of the name of this much-anticipated sequel with extreme skepticism, even if the Russo Brothers are your source.
Nonetheless, fans have found cause for false hope on more than one occasion this year. The title Avengers: End Game, for instance, was doing the rounds back in June, but was ultimately dismissed in light of Joe Russo’s statement that the next film’s subtitle wouldn’t originate from any dialogue in Infinity War. There was even a rumor that the title would be revealed at the end of Ant-Man and the Wasp, though obviously this one was pretty quickly refuted by the actual movie.

While a much more technically adroit vehicle than his misshapen, CG-laden martial-arts fantasy The Promise (2005), Chen Kaige's Legend of the Demon Cat prioritizes sprawling spectacle over involving storytelling and falls far short of the historical and social allegories with which he made his name — like The Yellow Earth, Sacrifice or Caught in the Web.
And yet the film could have had much more resonance. The story revolves around two scholars who investigate paranormal occurrences in the imperial court and struggle to solve a riddle in a world of illusion. From the emperor and his trusted eunuch all the...

Sacrifice is a strange film. Director Peter A. Dowling treats his audience as if they’d already read author Sharon Bolton’s source novelization, and know exactly what’s going to happen. As soon as Sacrifice rockets straight through a rapid-fire credits sequence filled with foreshadowing images, we know the Exact movie we’re getting. Nothing is hidden and tension is sparse.
It’s almost as if Dowling has his thumb on the fast-forward button, speeding his film towards an inevitable ending that’s projected more times than we can count. No mystery, no suspense, and certainly no thrills – just wooden, cult generalizations and wasted potential.
Radha Mitchell stars as Dr. Tora Hamilton, a wife who cannot give birth due to recent health complications. Distraught and discouraged, Tora travels to her husband Duncan’s (Rupert Graves) homeland – the Shetland Islands – where they apply to adopt a local child. Since there...

Bodies of mutilated women, children in peril, distraught mothers and mysterious sects are ripe fodder for horror films, and are tropes that writer and directors return to frequently. As such, with this ground being tred frequently, it's hard to come up with a concept or perspective that is original, or at least compelling. Such is the case with Sacrifice; director and writer Peter A. Dowling (who wrote Flight Plan) has created a combination of The Stepford Wives and Rosemary's Baby, with the locale and twisted religious rites of The Wicker Man thrown in. The result is a film that's neither great nor terrible; treading old paths can be comforting, but the end result is relatively forgettable. After several miscarriages, Dr. Tora Hamilton (Radha Mitchell) and...
