Sex & Nudity

  • Crude sexual references are rarely made. But when they show up they can be explicit and go on par with movies like "The Hangover". Nevertheless, they're somewhat and are used for comedic effect. Every time they are in cutscenes, they can be skipped at the will of the player.
  • Michael draws a penis as a joke, very easy to miss.
  • In the cutscene before the mission scouting the port its possible to see Trevors butt for a split second
  • In the loading screen, there can sometimes (but almost always) be a woman wearing a bikini. If you're playing on the PS5 remaster, you will always see the woman.
  • Trevor is sometimes half naked in his underwear through you do not see anything.
  • Many sex jokes and references are heard on the news and the advertisements on the radio. Almost every billboard has some sort of innuendo.
  • There are interactable strip clubs in-game (optional). You can get private lap dances from strippers in the club, during the lap dance there's breasts female nudity (only in the campaign) The player can choose to take her home after the dance and have sex with her. Graphic sexual audio plays while the actual act isn't shown.
  • There is an optional prostitution system in the game. The more you pay the hooker, the worse it gets. If you pay a lower amount, she will give you a blowjob. This is done from the players point of view, so we only see a head bobbing up and down on our lap, along with loud moaning, and dirty talk. ( "It's so big, What's your dirtiest fantasy, etc.") If you pay more, we see the girl get onto your lap, and then the camera changes to outside the vehicle, and you just hear moaning and dirty talk. No nudity.
  • Several female characters are mentioned as having been (or are implied to have been) prostitutes.
  • It's implied Floyd is insecure about the size of his penis, Trevor pulls his pants down and goes, "mine ain't nothing special, see?" When he pulls down his pants we see his buttocks and when he bends over we are able to see his testicles and flaccid penis for two brief moments.
  • There is a scene where Trevor pulls his pants down. He bends down to pull them back up and his penis and scrotum are seen hanging between his legs briefly, shown from behind.
  • There is a cult in the mountains called the Altruist. Some of the members, all older males, spawn totally naked, and their full genitalia are visible.
  • Only 2 sex scenes in the entire story mode and neither of them contain any nudity but exposed buttocks. We can also see a man's pubic hair but nothing else. Both scenes just show a man thrusting behind a woman and while one scene is brief the other is quite extended but neither are graphic.
  • The optional sexual content (hookers, strip club) are the most severe elements of the game. The story sexual scenes are mild and mostly consist of references and brief imagery.
  • The sexual content would be no worse than "Moderate" if it were not for the two optional minigames which are the hookers and lap dance.
  • The game isn't that bad if you avoid the hookers and strip club. The sexual content in the story and cutscenes are not severe but are more like a raunchy comedy that doesn't show more than bare buttocks.
  • When switching to a new character sometimes they are in the shower. Not graphic or sexual whatsoever, you only see the characters back.

Violence & Gore

  • You can kill people as you wish but you will face the consequences for your behavior, which is what happens pretty much in real life, and the violence here is extremely graphic and is realistic, not helped by the fact that this game has incredibly realistic and highly detailed graphics that make the violent content look more "in-your-face", although the graphics are really nice to look at.
  • Much more violent than its predecessors.
  • Pretty much the entire game is filled with violence, which can be petty gory at times. Shootouts are very frequent and when they occur they are quite intense and contain some gore.
  • Unlike Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA V does not feature dismemberment. However the violence here is much more frequent
  • Shooting someone with a shotgun or a minigun is much more bloody than other weapons used in online and story mode.
  • The violence can be compared to that of the 1991 film "Boyz in da Hood", though that doesn't make it any less strong.
  • While nowhere as violent as "Red dead redemption 2", which is way more violent and gorier, the violence is more frequent, as said before.
  • There are only a small handful of moments where any gore can be seen. The game mostly contains shootouts with splattering blood but no dismemberment. The parts that DO have gore are mainly for comic effect.
  • Players can shoot people to death with moderate blood splatter, somewhat similar to "Call of Duty", and can be intense depending on which game.
  • There is a torture scene. This is very graphic and by far the most violent part of the game. You can break your victim's knees with a wrench, pull one of his teeth out, waterboard him, and hook cables up to his nipples to electrocute him. This is required to do and is very sadistic and disturbing, not to mention played completely seriously.
  • In the role of three different characters, players can use a wide array of weapons ranging from pistols and shotguns to machine guns and grenades to kill people, with a cloud of blood usually splattering on the area. Cars can be used as weapons, too, both purposefully and accidentally, as players race through crowded streets slamming into anyone who gets in the way. A lot of blood will stain the environment if this happens.
  • One scene shows a man getting shot in the head in brief but graphic detail, with lots of blood and brain matter splattering all over the place. This lasts less than a second. In another scene, a woman gets sucked into a plane's jet engine's turbine, causing her to be completely torn to shreds while we see massive amounts of blood being tossed out by the turbine. These two scenes are some of the most graphic parts in the game.
  • Players can run people over with vehicles on the streets of Los Santos. This is accompanied with some blood splattering and people can be heard grunting, groaning and yelling in pain and sometimes this will result in large trails of blood. The police will obviously be alarmed if they choose to do that.
  • GTA 5 is the first game where animals are present, including dogs, cats, chickens, birds, cows, etc and they can all be killed in the same ways as humans.

Profanity

  • 1049 f words. A lot of it is on cutscenes that can be skipped. The campaign is also 30 hours long, which makes it not as frequent. (most profane game in the whole series) This count DOES NOT include NPC's saying swears which adds on many more F-words.
  • The online mode in the game also has strong profanity but not in as much of a frequent nature as the story. Likely around 200 F-words spread between missions, heists and random encounters.
  • Name-calling and insults will be common for most players.
  • In both the campaign and online you can flip people off.
  • If someone did a censored playthrough of the game, 90% of the dialogue would be censored.
  • Trevor is the character who swears the most in the game.
  • Just about every swear word in the dictionary is used in this game.
  • There are 10 instances of "cunt" in the story mode. 6 of them are used in main missions, 2 are said in a side mission and there is a billboard with the word on it.
  • The N word is constantly used by Franklin and Lamar.
  • The radio stations in this game are uncensored so expect strong language (including the n-word)
  • (Deleted. Personal opinions about ratings are not appropriate for the Parents Guide.)
  • Severely strong language throughout of the game, as well as racial slurs.
  • It's a GTA game, so you expect the same amount of profanity as the other games in the series. There is lots of swearing in all cutscenes. Most children have heard all of these terms by now though.
  • Some of the terms used include the large amounts of F-bombs such as "F**k" and it's derivatives including "f**k's sake", "f**king", "f**ked", screwed, screw, "motherf**ker", etc. (in which the F-word said over 1000 times in the campaign) along with some other swears.
  • A lot of the language comes from random NPC's, people raging in cars and other unscripted moments. Hundreds of swears are also in the cutscenes.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Characters can buy drugs (weed, haddish, tranquilizers, cocaine, meth, mushrooms, etc;) and sell them (Online Only)
  • Lots of drug use and references, including tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, etc.
  • GTA has an online mode that excludes multiple instances of drug use as it's mostly in the cut scenes. While your in the game mode you can not purchase or sell drugs although people can be seen drinking and or smoking on the footpaths of the map.
  • Optional drug use in online mode
  • The player can drunk-drive, but this will result in the police chasing them.
  • A main character is a large scale drug dealer. There are many parts that take place in meth labs, negotiating crystal meth and cocaine sales, along other things.
  • There are a few missions involving drug trades and deals.
  • The many use of alcohol, drugs and smoking is also featured many times throughout the bulk of the game.
  • Scenes in the story mode include hallucinating various absurdities like killer clowns and aliens, getting drunk in bars (bar fights due to intoxication also present), being drugged with a hallucinogenic agent by others, constant alcohol drinking and smoking of cigarettes by most characters, participating in drug deals and large scale drug trafficking, and characters snorting cocaine.
  • A player has several opportunities to make their character smoke marijuana and drink alcohol. When the player's character smokes marijuana, the vision becomes brighter and objects become haloed with light. In one instance, possibly laced marijuana (PCP or some type of hallucinogen) makes the player's character hallucinate alien monsters. The result of imbibing alcohol is a wonky camera designed to simulate dizziness and loss of balance. Players can also drive while intoxicated.
  • The player is also free during free-roaming to drink alcohol to the point of drunkenness and get high on various drugs. These produce hazy effects on the screen and impair player movement.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • It should be mentioned that this game is 10 years old, but it is still VERY graphic at times.
  • Overall, this game is much rougher than its predecessors. And the content is very strong when speaking of language, drug use, and violence.
  • The violence in this game is pretty intense. However, the tone is generally very goofy and comedic.
  • The game features a mode called online which lets you interact with your friends or other players.
  • You can remove the nudity and cussing by skipping the cut scenes and avoiding places that require nudity and cussing. Doing this makes it almost on par with red dead redemption 2.
  • The character Trevor Phillips is quite frightening, being an unhinged, brutal maniac who is an utterly remorseless and unrelentingly evil mass murderer, has plenty of violent mood swings, commits all sorts of heinous crimes for fun, and absolutely revels in the sheer brutality and cruelty of his actions. Although most of it is done for black comedy, this can be highly disturbing for some.
  • A ghost can appear at the tip of Mount Gordo between the hours of 23:00 and 00:00, which may frighten younger audiences. Highly disturbing audio plays around the area that indicates that the ghost is of a woman who was pushed off the cliff by an unknown assailant, making this overall an unpleasant sight for children and could potentially induce nightmares.
  • Players can purchase various types of firearms, stabbing weapons, explosives, and other weapons at gun stores which are commonly found around the map. Additionally, in online mode, there is a "Gun Van" that sells exclusive, even more violent tools, as well as normal ones at discounted prices.
  • Older players in story mode may make use of heavy machine guns, tear gas, and C4 to carry out terrorist attacks.
  • Discrimination of minorities is commonplace in this game, and the player can sometimes hear NPCs saying that they only listen to white rappers. Additionally, several characters express anti-Canadian sentiment.
  • If Grand Theft Auto V was a movie, it would be rated R for strong bloody violence throughout, pervasive strong language, crude sexual content, nudity, strong drug content and a graphic scene of torture.
  • Many scenes in the game can be considered intense.
  • The tone in general is darkly comedic and satirical. Heists are also tense. Some of the gunfights may be intense.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • In story mode when you meet Trevor he is having sex with a girl and you see him from the side and the back
  • At some point during the story you can encounter a side mission that is titled "Paparazzi - The Sex Tape" and it requires you to film 2 people having intercourse. Not required, but you may accidentally stumble upon it. There is also no nudity during this mission.
  • During the Merryweather heist mission, Lester escapes from his hospital, wearing his hospital gown. As he walks away, his butt can be seen for around 5 seconds. Not sexual, and this is skippable.
  • Franklin is able to strip down to his underwear, but no other crude nudity is shown.
  • It is implied that Franklin's best friend, Lamar, and Franklin's aunt, Denise, had sexual intercourse on Franklin's bed.
  • One of the first missions, Michael finds out his wife was cheating on him with his tennis coach, during the cutscene, we can see the tennis coach only in underwear running away, and Amanda (Michael's wife) wearing a towel, trying to defuse the situation.

Violence & Gore

  • In the beginning, a heist in a bank appears and some blood is shown.
  • Take note that all extreme violence in the game occurs during cutscenes. A graphic headshot, a man burned alive, a decomposing corpse, all seen in cutscenes that can be skipped. In actual gameplay, violence is frequent but not as graphic as other games such as Red Dead Redemption 2 (lacking that game's dismemberment mechanic). Even using explosive weapons will just result in ragdolling characters, and is probably the least severe part of the game.
  • In order to get the trophy/achievement "out of your depth," you must get eaten by a shark. This is optional, and if you choose to do this, it's not very graphic other than some blood coming out of the sharks mouth.
  • In a side mission, it is implied that Trevor was physically abused by his mother, who dies at the end of the mission (again, implied not shown)
  • During a mission where Michael has been kidnapped, if you fail the mission while trying to search his location, a special cutscene will play, where Michael goes through a shredder, Michael isnt seen, but you can see lots off blood.
  • At the end, there's a sequence that shows Trevor being burned alive. We see him screaming in extreme agony as the flames engulf him. Despite the fact that Trevor is insane, this sequence is extremely disturbing and emotionally intense, but this is completely optional and is one of the 3 endings the players can choose, and thankfully, it isn't canon.
  • Most missions feature some sort of violence, lethal or non-lethal. There is also violence in cutscenes (shooting, fist fights). In one such cutscene, Trevor Phillips throws a man, Johnny Klebitz, to the ground and kicks him multiple times until he dies and his face becomes bloody. This is disturbingly bloody and graphic but not that much.

Profanity

  • There is a scene where Jimmy says the N word.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • In one scene, a man takes a hit from a weed joint.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • At the end of the story mode, players choose whether Trevor dies, Michael dies, or all 3 live. The endings where Trevor and Michael die are quite disturbing and brutally depressing, but they're thankfully non-canon.
  • In the mission "Bury the Hatchet". We see a decomposing face of a corpse in it's coffin, which is shown in extremely graphic detail. Later we find out that the corpse belongs to Brad Snider, the guy Trevor Philips thought was in prison.
  • In one cutscene, Trevor enters the back of a strip club, where it is heavily implied he kills the owner of the establishment. Later on, Trevor can be seen shoving who is presumably the owner's body in a fridge, and Franklin questions what happened to the owner.
  • There is an extremely disturbing implied aftermath of a rape, showing trevor stepping up from a bed whilst a man is curled up in pink pyjamas, crying and repeating "its just a dream" in a crazed manner.
