Best episode yet of a disappointing S2
spasticfreakshow17 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
John Cho really shone in this campy episode which finally revealed what Funcle has been up to all these years abroad. Over-the-top acting, dancing, etc still didn't make me laugh out loud, but brought back some of the amusing vibes of the wonderful first season. Alongside Funcle Ulysses, I even vaguely enjoyed Grace; until now I could not for the life of me figure out why other cast members were so enamored with her. Even worse, this season's writers wrote Zoe into an unlikable hole that flips the script on S1 - now we're left wondering how Aniq ever liked her.

More of this Cho actor, please, Hollywood. I'm off to watch whatever else he's done.

Weird Life and Episode

"Ulysses" is a thrilling romance story on The Afterparty Season 2 Episode 7, featuring Vivian Wu and John Cho. The story takes place across the world, involving the bride's mother and her uncle, who may or may not be Grace's biological father. The story is overdramatic and takes place in various genres, making it engaging and not overwhelming by the theme. The plot twist shakes up the investigation, much to Aniq's dismay. The story is a delight to watch, spanning from the Middle East to Tampa, FL. The Afterparty Season 2 Episode 6, "Danner's Fire," features a well-acted story that blends Western, romantic adventure, and family drama. The dancing element adds comedy, with Cho's performance as the titular character delivering a memorable performance. Tiffany Haddish's performance in the setting is enjoyable, and Cho's performance in the episode is a feast for the rich tropes from these genres. Cho's main reason for joining The Afterparty Season 2 is the character of Ulysses, as revealed by Town & Country. Legends of the Fall is heavily referenced in "Ulysses," with similarities to Dirty Dancing and The English Patient. The episode maintains a steady pace with plot points driving the narrative. The episode ends by pointing the finger at Feng, the father of the bride, who is suspected of having done it. The episode explores themes of tragedy and the possibility of Feng's involvement in the affair. Episode 7 of the series returns to its previous level after weaker episodes. Ulysses' narration resolves character mysteries and complicates interpersonal dynamics, keeping everyone on the edge of the killer's identity. Travis is a likely suspect due to the wedding night events. John Cho's vulnerability and charm are showcased in a funny, heartbreaking, and dramatic performance. However, the reliance on love angles in Season 2 is unnecessary and may have been a downer in terms of writing. Despite this, Episode 7 brings the show back on track for an explosive ending, bringing the show back on track for a satisfying conclusion. Ulysses, a distant relative, is revealed to be a jerk who aims to seduce Vivian and discover if he is her father without Grace's consent. This turns Ulysses into a heel turn, as he betrayed his loving brother with his wife and has a powerful obsession with Vivian that threatens to steal a part of Feng's family. This dark turn is particularly concerning for a show about murder, as Ulysses has been a source of joy for Zoe and Grace. Despite the dark nature of his actions, Ulysses remains a bright spot in the story. Ulysses, a former dancer with the US Army, experienced PTSD after witnessing a friend's foot injury. He offers Danish babies to everyone and reminds Aniq not to question her family. Aniq and Danner believe they need to talk to them to learn more about the case and avoid involvement in Edgar's death. Zoe, who is against her parents answering Aniq's questions, also becomes suspicious when they tell her they have decided not to participate in the investigation. Ulysses' half-brother Feng took him in after the traumatic incident, and he became depressed. To get him back to dancing, Feng suggested a ballroom dance competition with Vivian as his partner. Vivian fell in love with Ulysses, winning regionals and dancing on a beach during their world tours. Vivian suggested a special lift for Ulysses, but he was hesitant. Vivian convinced him to do it, and they shared a kiss after the lift. The story highlights the importance of trusting one's memories and understanding the complexities of a case. Edgar's mother's case has been pushed away, making it difficult to determine the killer. Feng and Isabelle are the most suspicious, and Hannah's love for Grace may have contributed to her lying. Grace appears shady, as seen with Hannah and advising her to hide something. With just three more episodes, it remains unclear who the killer might be.

War Injuries Can Be Funny
gensbill17 August 2023
I think using an American soldier having his leg blown off as the pretense for a satiric romance and light comedy is brilliant.

I'm sure the tens of thousands of horrifically injured soldiers barely getting through every day dealing with the attendant PTSD appreciate the attention paid to their losses and the humorous moments they provide the audience.

I wonder why more shows don't use injured American soldiers as props for their genius?

Maybe people will learn just how funny it is to see a young man maimed -- especially an American.

Then they want to know why America doesn't care whether or not they ever settle their strike.
