Whether you love or hate them, remakes have been around for a long time, and they’re not slowing down anytime soon. An update on The Crow is set to arrive this summer, with Hollywood’s version of Speak No Evil not far behind, just as two upcoming examples.
While not all remakes can hold a candle to the original, there’s been no shortage of fantastic movies that reworked genre favorites in thrilling new ways. Some of which even managed to eclipse the original classics, like 1986’s The Fly or 1982’s The Thing.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to horror remakes that set themselves apart from the source material, either through expanded storytelling or heightened, visceral horror.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Nickelodeon dialogue and acting coach Brian Peck got into many controversies after he was arrested back in 2003 on 11 charges of s-xual abuse on a minor. While this minor was unnamed before, it recently came to light that the one abused was actually none other than the American actor cum musician, Drake Bell.

In a soon-to-be-released ID documentary on Nickelodeon, Bell got candid about all of the times he was s-xually assaulted by Peck. Apple TV+ has dropped a new clip from the upcoming two-episode premiere of the limited series Manhunt. The series is based on James L. Swanson’s award-winning non-fiction book Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer, and the clip shows Lincoln’s right-hand man Edwin Stanton (Tobias Menzies) and Lafayette Baker (Patton Oswalt) discussing the possibility John Wilkes Booth is being helped by powerful people.

20 years ago, Saw made an indelible impact on the horror genre. Not only did it usher in the so-called “torture porn” subgenre that would become synonymous with the aughts, but it also launched the career of filmmaker James Wan, who has firmly cemented his place among the masters of horror with follow-ups like The Conjuring and Insidious.
In the two decades since, the lucrative franchise has spawned nine sequels — 2005’s Saw II, 2006’s Saw III, 2007’s Saw IV, 2008’s Saw V, 2009’s Saw VI, 2010’s Saw: The Final Chapter, 2017’s Jigsaw, 2021’s Spiral: From the Book of Saw, and 2023’s Saw X — with a worldwide box office total of over $1 billion.
Despite being often maligned by detractors for its mindless sadism, fans are just as much invested in the series’ soap opera-esque melodrama as the innovative death traps. Formulaic though the general plots may be, the non-linear storyline is deceptively...

The tale begins with a crime that left everyone baffled. In July 1976, a school bus carrying 26 children (and one driver) was hijacked in the sleepy Central California town of Chowchilla. The kidnap victims were taken to two vans, driven to an abandoned rock quarry, led off the bus, and essentially buried alive in an underground compartment full of mattresses. Things like that just didn’t happen in a town like this.
Seventies California was loaded with bad juju, from the Zodiac Killer to the Patty Hearst kidnapping to Jim Jones.

In 1971, Clint Eastwood's Harry Callahan saved San Francisco from a theatrical serial killer while simultaneously establishing the "loose canon" genre of cop movies. "Dirty Harry" saw Andrew Robinson's Scorpio Killer sniping innocent Franciscans before he's taken down by Eastwood's lone wolf cop, in a film that caused significant controversy upon its release with many critics accusing it of being fascist propaganda. As time has gone on, the prevailing view of the film has become much more favorable, and "Dirty Harry" is now considered easily one of the best films of the 1970s, and even 21st century as a whole.
That's a good thing, because despite the fact that Eastwood's cavalier inspector appears to be a walking endorsement of police brutality and extreme right-wing values, the movie as a whole should leave any discerning viewer conflicted and reflective. After all, director Don Siegel obviously went to great lengths...

While there’s plenty to be said and appreciated about cozy, comforting horror that offers catharsis, the genre’s ultimate aim is to terrify, shock, and even repulse. Of course, there is no shortage of ways that filmmakers accomplish this, frequently through gore, violence, and potent scare tactics, but transgressive horror is in a league of its own.
More than just gore, transgressive horror films revel in the taboo. Transgressive horror shatters cultural norms and seeks to explore beyond the boundaries of taste and social sensibilities, challenging viewers with shocking and sacrilegious imagery and themes. And yet, it’s not solely for shock value; transgressive horror has more on its mind than simply gore and depictions of depravity. There’s a purpose behind the pain. This week’s streaming picks are for the seekers of extreme cinema, unafraid to test their limits.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Plot: When a botched assignment leads to an attack on someone he cares about, a cold-blooded hitman (Michael Fassbender) goes on the warpath.
Review: I know what you’re thinking – that premise sounds tired and familiar. Indeed, the hitman revenge movie has become an overly familiar subgenre, with this at least the fourth or fifth movie I’ve seen this year about a profession that may not even really exist (as argued in Richard LinIklater’s upcoming Hit Man). An adaptation of the French graphic novel of the same name, the chief interest here is seeing how Fincher executes such a straightforward genre movie, and indeed, it’s his style that keeps The Killer from feeling recycled.
In a lot of ways, The Killer feels like Fincher’s attempt to deliver Netflix a more straightforward film as payback for them bankrolling his (excellent) passion project, Mank. Yet, audiences who catch...

This article contains The Killer spoilers.
“Desperate for conversation.” Those are the only words uttered by Michael Fassbender’s hitman during his table-side chat with what amounts to something of a professional rival. On paper, the line is a deflection—a typically wry slice of irony shared by an assassin who in addition to being deadly is a master of the deadpan. Yet there is something to this admission in a scene where the film’s titular killer and another murderer beguilingly played by Tilda Swinton decide to share a drink.
Not even appearing for quite 10 minutes in David Fincher’s latest thriller, which just premiered on Netflix, Swinton’s unnamed character is simply credited as “the Expert.” That’s appropriate, because while she ends up on the wrong side of Fassbender’s pistol, the Swinton character brings a certain finesse the audience is encouraged to notice is absent in Fassbender’s protagonist.

This article contains major spoilers for "The Killer."How often do you think about your job? In terms of your daily duties, upcoming deadlines on your calendar, and other day-to-day issues, probably a fair amount. Yet how often do you consider your job — not just as a checklist but as a vocation — as something you're putting out into the world, as something that defines who you are as a person?
As the imaginary demon of toxic masculinity, Tyler Durden, famously says in David Fincher's "Fight Club," "You are not your job." Of course, Tyler is not to be trusted, and "Fight Club," like a majority of Fincher's filmography, is a pitch-black satire. What if you are your job, and what if your contribution to the world is both minimal and actively negative? What if your job, and all jobs, were this destructively banal, and everyone from sanitation staff...

The Killer maybe David Fincher’s most Fincher-esque movie, as one can’t help but compare the protagonist, a precise assassin, to the director himself. Yet, to an audience that doesn’t much care for perfection or anything cinematic and is just looking for a crime thriller like any of the mastermind’s previous hits, this film will come across as lackluster. The Killer, based on a French comic book of the same name, is a tale about the mundane life of an anonymous… killer. Set in the present day, The Killer makes it abundantly clear how easy it is to be an assassin in the 21st century. Completely banking on leading man Michael Fassbender’s performance and appearance, the film is 2 hours of mostly the protagonist and his thoughts. Fincher made his mark in the industry through his crime thriller Se7en back in the day. Ever since his...

In a random scene of director Vincent Shade’s The Unseen (2023), a character asks another character if he has been able to find the Zodiac Killer. That is more than a clear homage to the iconic David Fincher movie. And the reason is that the director is attempting to pull off something that is cut from the same cloth. Except it just isn’t what he hoped for it to be.
Spoilers Ahead
The whole point of the non-linear narrative format is to elevate the quality of storytelling and essentially make a film more engaging for the audience. This movie uses that just for the sake of looking cool. Everything is so random here, from the acting to the writing to the abrupt changes in tone. For a larger chunk of its runtime, we don’t even get what is really happening. And we don’t really care about it either.

In the world of cinema, there are two intriguing paths that storytellers traverse. One leads us down a well-trodden road, where the narrative flows in a straightforward manner, gently guiding us through familiar landscapes and effortlessly unfolding the context of the story. These films embrace simplicity and accessibility, inviting us to immerse ourselves in their world without the need for complex mental acrobatics. But there lies another path, a trailblazing journey that demands we think twice, ponder, and unravel the mysteries hidden beneath the surface. These cinematic marvels become portals to a different realm of imagination, where reality and dreams intertwine. They beckon us to embrace ambiguity and question the boundaries of what we know.

A suspect in the Long Island Serial Killer case is in custody. The arrest comes more than 10 years after police discovered several bodies in a marsh close to an exclusive beachside enclave in New York. The arrest of a New York City architect brings more questions than answers to the case, though. While the arrest is fresh, discussions about the case and potential suspects are not. We’ve collected one documentary and two podcasts you’ll want to check out before an eventual trial.
Police arrest a suspect in the Long Island serial killer case
On June 14, News 12 Long Island announced a 59-year-old architect named Rex Heuermann had been arrested in connection with the deaths of three women. All three bodies were found in a marsh near Gilgo Beach in 2010 and 2011. According to the news outlet, Heuermann may be charged with more crimes. Several other bodies were found in the same area.

A social media star on the rise (played by Dani Barker) discovers that online fame can come at a deadly price in the new thriller Follow Her, an innovative and enthralling film that was one of my favorite features screened at the 2022 Popcorn Frights Film Festival (where it won the Jury Prize for Best Film).
With Follow Her now in theaters and on VOD via Quiver, Daily Dead caught up with director Sylvia Caminer in a new Q&a feature to discuss the making of Follow Her, including working with lead actor Dani Barker (who also wrote the screenplay), keeping horror fans on their toes with the film's subversive scares, exploring the dangerous side of social media, what it was like to direct her first narrative feature after a successful career of documentary filmmaking, and plans to continue exploring the world of Follow Her in a potential trilogy or series.

You might know Louise Post as the co-frontwoman of ’90s alt-rock icons Veruca Salt, but she’s now going solo with Sleepwalker, her debut album under her own name.
After Veruca Salt released their 2015 comeback album Ghost Notes, Post went back to writing music as usual. But the songs that began flowing out of her — which she says “almost appeared to be writing themselves” — felt much more personal to her than what she’d done previously with a band.
“I have always identified as a sleepwalker,” Post said of the album’s title in a statement. “I slept-walked around my house routinely when I was a child, and even down the street. I believe in hindsight it was me trying to process what was going on in my home with my parents’ troubled marriage. As far as I know, I stopped sleepwalking after the divorce when I was eight, but...

Team17’s ‘80s black comedy slasher adventure Killer Frequency has hit the airwaves today, letting players come as close to playing as Stretch in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 as they can get (for now). Accompanying the launch is the customary launch trailer that sets the mood immediately as the serial killer known as The Whistling Man makes his presence known.
Set in a Midwestern US town, Killer Frequency follows Forrest Nash, a washed-up DJ and presenter of the ‘The Scream’ late night show. You’ve just started your shift when someone calls in with a horrifying discovery. What follows sees you meeting with a variety of eccentric small-town personalities including potential victims and suspects as you try to help each of your callers survive the night.
It won’t be easy, as your interactions with callers to the show could help prevent the callers’ grisly fates, or seal them for The Whistling Man.

Team17’s Killer Frequency is a delightfully gimmicky game with an outrageous horror-comedy premise. A legendary serial killer named The Whistling Man has reappeared in Gallows Creek, and after the small town’s police station is attacked and the sheriff is killed, your late-night radio host is tasked with fielding 911 calls. On air, you’ll use your smooth-talking know-how to choose the right responses to get people out of life-or-death encounters with The Whistling Man, and between calls you’ll explore the near-empty studio in first-person mode, scrounging for scraps of information to help you make more informed decisions.
Under these circumstances, you’d probably stop hosting the show for a night and certainly wouldn’t put these personal emergencies (and potential deaths) on air. But Killer Frequency is broadcasting on its own exaggerated terms from the get-go: The station’s call sign is The Scream, local restaurants have names like Grilling Spree,...

Netflix has acquired the North American rights to Todd Haynes’ film “May December,” which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday. The film stars Julianne Moore as a woman who became notorious and spent time in prison for an affair with a seventh grader whom she later married, and Natalie Portman as the actress who hangs out with Moore’s character as preparation for playing her in a movie.
Netflix paid a reported $11 million for the film, a deliberately pulpy outing for Haynes. A week into the festival, it is Cannes’ largest deal to date.
The streaming company will release the film late this year and will no doubt launch an awards campaign focusing on Moore and Portman.
Haynes directed from a screenplay by Samy Burch and Alex Mechanik. Producers on “May December” were Jessica Elbaum and Will Ferrell of Gloria Sanchez Productions, Christine Vachon and Pam Koffler of...

Between (allegedly) dating Dua Lipa and starring in an upcoming White Men Can’t Jump remake, rapper Jack Harlow’s glow-up is real. Feeling pretty confident about himself, the Louisville native claims he’s “the hardest white boy” on the mic since Eminem on his new song, “They Don’t Love It.”
Rapping over a soulful beat from Hollywood Cole, Harlow spits, “Ya boy’s strivin’ to be the most dominant ever/ The hardest white boy since the one who rapped about vomit and sweaters/ And hold the comments ’cause I promise you I’m honestly better than whoever came to your head right then.”
Of course, the second line is a reference to Em’s classic “Lose Yourself,” when he famously raps, “His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy/ There’s vomit on his sweater already, mom’s spaghetti.”
It’s worth noting that Harlow previously told Pitchfork...

Sally McNeil was arrested in the late 90s for the murder of her husband, Ray McNeil. Netflix’s Killer Sally worked to explore how the media and authorities portrayed Sally as a female bodybuilder whose recollection of the murder was improbable. But the true crime docuseries relies heavily on Ray’s physical abuse of her and her children. Killer Sally explores the abuse and why John Jr. Lowden said one specific thing to her mother after her arrest for the murder.
Sally McNeil, mother of John Jr. Lowden in ‘Killer Sally’ | via Netflix Ray McNeil started to hurt Sally after their marriage
Sally was still a Marine when she met Ray through a friend. He was also a bodybuilder and former Marine. But Sally called it “lust at first sight ” instead of love at first sight.” His muscles and physique enamored her. The two fell in love, and Sally fell even harder.
