Best comedy I've seen all year
Top_Dawg_Critic3 July 2023
Every aspect of this film was hilarious, thus why I'm voting it the funniest comedy of the year. From the laughable choice of color palettes and terrible cinematography, to the annoying score, and the cringeworthy predictable and cliche-riddled screenplay. I'll even say this nonsense qualifies for a Razzie Award. Apparently Elizabeth Blake-Thomas is an award winning director, yet this mess could've been filmed better by a fifth grade drama class.

The action choreography will fill you will eyerolls and cringeworthy laughs, and Blake-Thomas clearly doesn't know how to direct her cast either, because most of the actors seemed like this was their first rodeo. I felt bad for the lovely Mena Suvari having to endure this amateur-hour nonsense, but I feel even worse for the legendary Mickey Rourke, who seemed like he regretted being in this mess, especially towards the end when they had pink blush on his nose and cheeks to make him look like a clown.

The story itself showed promise, but the terrible filmmaking made this a comedy, instead of how it's listed as an action thriller, because the action was the funniest parts, and the thrills were cringeworthy eyerolls. Even at a mere 80 min runtime, the terrible pacing made this feel never-ending. Even the opportunities to have some decent gore effects felt like props and fake blood you'd buy at a Dollar store on Halloween. I'm giving this mess a generous 3/10 for the laughs, and out of pity for the cast who tried their best with the nonsense they had to work with. Even if you're a fan of any of the cast, do yourself a favor and forget this garbage exists.

Hunt Club Review
nuageink21 May 2023
This movie has a decent storyline, but definitely could've been written better for sure. The acting is absolutely horrible in every sense of the word. The action scenes are so bad you can tell there's no physical contact during actual fight scenes. This movie seems to have been put together by a bunch of amateurs. As far as the story goes it seems to have a tons of gaps in the story itself. Not to mention all the cheap "blood" and special effects. The blood literally looks like red paint. I laughed through most of this movie simply because of how bad it is. Don't bother wasting your money or time on this movie at all. And Please don not make a sequel!!!

Didn't I already see this before?
jdollak12 July 2023
This movie is effectively the same movie as Death Hunt, also released the same year. This has a few small twists on the Most Dangerous Game formula, mostly bringing in a third party instead of just making the protagonist able to turn the tables.

It held attention fairly well, but it also felt cheaper than it should have. Blood looked poorly done. Injuries looked especially fake.

But the movie gets more silly than it should once things kick in for the third act. There's way too much quipping. This is a common problem, and it makes me cringe every time I hear one of these lines, knowing that the writer thought this was the right way to lead into a kill.

It's nice to see Mena Suvari having a bit of fun with an action-heavy role.

I couldn't say it's any good for someone who wants to value their time, but it's a thoroughly decent movie to eat snacks to.

Ridiculous
arfdawg-125 July 2023
Well this COULD have been a good movie. But it's not even close.

The director has no clue how to direct a movie and keep the action movie forward. It's just so slow you'll be nodding out.

Next, the hunt male characters are so thinly drawn you'll find them annoying at best. IF you can get past the absolutely horrible acting.

Mickey Rourke is unrecognizable. His face literally looks like he's wearing a mask. I'm not kidding. It looks like you can pull it off like a plastic Halloween mask.

Mena seems to want to prove she is overrated as an actress. All of the acting is dismal.

Throw in a bunch of stupid poorly written toxic masculinity BS and you have the biggest bomb of the year on your hands.

I don't even know how to rate this
lawsonlynn9 August 2023
I am convinced this movie is meant to be humorous. I am also wondering whether Mickey Rourke took the job as a favor to someone else. I had read that Mena Suvari had been through a rough time -having overcome a struggle with addiction. Perhaps, she merely needed to get back to work. Perhaps she owed a favor to others in this production (filmed in Mississippi-another strange aspect of this film). Something tells me that the backstory would be more more entertaining than the movie.

All I can really say is that the movie is entertaining enough and stars 2 very accomplished actors in Mena Suvari and Mickey Rourke. I would not pay extra to watch it but it was available as part of my regular Prime subscription. No one should take this movie very seriously.

Really bad
ddbeuth22 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The hunting people on an island theme has been so overdone that I don't usually bother with the genre. But this one had Casper Van Dien and Mickey Rourke, so I thought I'd give it a chance. Bad mistake.

I don't think the rest of this actually qualifies as a spoiler, but out of an abundance of caution:

Spoiler alert

The first half of the movie was nothing but generic incel drivel that could easily have been copied verbatim from any number of Twitter threads or YouTube comment sections. Given that the premise of the movie was so-called "alpha males" hunting women, misogyny was expected from the bad guys. However, this was not only eye-rollingly bad, but dragged on way too long.

And there are so many things in this movie that are just .. stupid is the only word that truly fits. They made a big deal about the masks on the wall of the lodge but no one ever wore them. They kept showing close-ups of cameras ("camouflaged" with what looked like the really fake plastic ivy your grandma drapes over the mantle at Christmas) in the woods, but no one ever watched the monitors. Despite being really busy running around in the forest being the hunted/hunter, the protagonist's outfit kept inexplicably changing. My eight and nine year old nephews had better fight choreography when they played pro-wrestler/Godzilla in the backyard. There are lots of deadly traps in the woods even though there are a number of first time hunters and dogs running around that could just as easily spring them as the hunted (not to mention that using such traps would pretty much defeat the purpose of the hunters proving that they were stronger/smarter/ faster/whatever than their prey). The heroes kept using the "Let's split up! It'll be faster!" plot device with predictable results.

Basically, the plot, dialogue, and action scenes were truly awful. Don't bother.

Hunt Club is a Not as Good as The Hunt
tkdlifemagazine21 August 2023
This "B" movie draws its source material from the famous, and often repeated, "The Most Dangerous Game. The movie does not do a lot to disguise this premise early on, although it may not be known to the victims. The movie is not nearly as good as the plagued "The Hunt" from 2020. That movie is really well done and engaging. This Ione is watchable as long as you ignore the horrible dialogue and cheesy characters. It is violent and crazy, but I do think they make the film. The visuals are comic book like and do evidence a low budget. There is an attempt to work a Tarantino-ish twist and "Kill Bill" female empowerment into the tale. If you take it as Homage it fairs better than an attempt for originality. Mean Suva is a weak spot in this one.

low cost horror
blackmelo5 July 2023
It's nothing spectacular, the story has been done many times like in "Ready or not" and "the hunt". Those two films are entertaining and well directed. This is just a low budget rip off of said films with terrible fight scenes where people are punched from a meter away and take the hit like we aren't meant to notice they have just punched thin air. So even though I have given it 4 stars for the poor acting and lack of original story it is watcheable and if you have watched the two I mentioned already and looking for something to pass the time then this passes the time but the story is as expected. Nothing happens that isn't already mentioned in the films plot description.

Half-baked "feminist" revenge film
jollyjumpup14 July 2023
As the majority of reviewers here have pointed out, this film has strong echoes of films that have been done earlier and better. It reminded me of those old low budget women in prison movies shot in the Philippines - the only difference being the women in this film get to keep their bras and panties on.

Written by two men, it's supposed to be a feminist thriller. And that calls to mind the 1982 "feminist" slasher film The Slumber Party Massacre by Rita Mae Brown, which was ironically loaded with t'n'a and other sexist standard conventions. But at least that film matched the quality of films in its genre.

Hunt Club pulls its punches. While there's plenty of spilled blood, we're spared some of the gory kills, probably due to budgetary limitations.

The costumes do stand out, but not in a good way. When the two male leads first appeared, I thought they were dressed for some Lone Ranger and Tonto cowboy and Indian cosplay. And both male and female actors are decked out in the gaudiest cowboy boots imaginable. I kept thinking it had to be a "perk" for the stars.

The script is structurally sound but the story lacks the kind of Death Wish credibility that makes reenge films work and the cliched dialog isn't helped by the pretentious references to ancient mythology. The plot is paper thin and its premise is ludicrous. The characters are preposterous.

I feel sorry for Mena Suvari. I'm sure she had high expectations for this, based on the director's stated objective to make meaningful films. And I have to wonder about who runs the show at Uncork'd. The quality of their movies is all over the place.

Hunting
BandSAboutMovies5 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A new version of The Most Dangerous Game, this finds Cassandra (Mena Suvari, a long way from American Pie) trying to find her lost girlfriend and daughter. It leads her to Carter (Casper Van Dien), who offers her $100,000 to be part of the hunt on his island.

I'm sure you can see where this is going. He wants her to be part of the hunter, along with other women like Tessa (Maya Stojan) and Lexi (Jessica Belkin) while he and his rich friends like Jackson (Will Peltz) and Virgil (Mickey Rourke) try to kill them.

But those rich guys have no idea just how dangerous women can be.

I have to tell you, this movie has one of the bloodier and most upsetting castrations I've seen in a movie and if that's not a selling point, I don't know what is.

Directed by Elizabeth Blake-Thomas (Unseen, Just Swipe) and written by David Lipper and John Saunders, Hunt Club might not break any new ground, but it moves quick, looks good and has plenty of star power for a streaming movie. I love that Van Dien has found a second life playing heavies in movies like this, because he's really great in this film.

Terrible
kbrooner-421598 July 2023
One of the worst movies I've seen. Terrible acting. Storyline been done a million times. Premise is ridiculous and unbelievable. Truly awful movie. Director and producer should probably try something else with their lives.

Seems like some woman was cheated on by a couple guys so she hates all men and pretends in her head that she could beat up a man.

All these women in this movie couldn't beat up a 6 year old boy.

Using washed up old actors is usually a sign that the movie story line was too stupid to be bid on my actual movie studios. Did Madonna make this movie? She finally figure out she's washed up and undesirable by men.

Enjoyable B list action
edencherries29 July 2023
It is enjoyable and satisfying. Its a solid B/B- revenge flick. The writing isn't groundbreaking and its fairly predictable. The acting isn't amazing...honestly its kinda bad but it isn't the worst movie either. Its not particularly deep or well though out but if you like something relatively fast-paced where you don't have to d a lot of thinking this is the movie for you! Cassandra remarks that she could be Jackson's mom even though he looks older than her and about the same age as the guy who plays his dad. The action sequences look a little poorly put together and there is no real gore in the more. All the stabbing, shooting etc happen slightly off screen but there is plenty of fake looking blood. Its kitschy, like i said I enjoyed it just don't think too hard about it.

It's Rather Average.
phleanix18 January 2024
Mena Suvari puts in a solid performance in this and her superior acting ability is quite apparent throughout the film.

A fairly "basic" premise, but it didn't need to be anything special.

The film is surprisingly well shot but Dialogue is amateur-ish at times.

(There's also someone labelled as "Scotland" whose accent can only be described as Irish-via-Vladivostok. Truly dreadful.)

Despite what I can only assume was a relatively low budget, the film looks good and is enjoyable enough.

Just don't expect much originality or to have your mind blown.

Goof: Keep an eye open for the very obviously breathing "body" around the 1hr mark. The cameraman must've spotted it and swings upwards rather sharply! :D.

Oh my god this is a very bad movie and also hilarious
tfwqmicz26 July 2023
Follows a group of male hunters who regularly lure women to their island with the chance to win 100K in a hunt, only to discover that they are the hunted, but this time they mess with the wrong girls and must deal with the consequences.

I should have know better because movie like this and with actors like wanna be casper van dien is doomed like ... Oh my god this is a very bad movie and also hilarious. What were they trying to proof. Why is it that people make movies like this. For me it was done after 10 minutes and the last 7 minutes I was writing this review. Vasper please go the doctor and let them check out your lings and throat because you will find out that smoking cigars is bad for your health. Lets not forget about Mickey watching him and listening to what is coming out of his mouth does hurt. Please man it is ok rhst you stop have a good one and never show your face ever again because someone should protect you because the directors are using you and ask for a refund at your local hospital for a plastic surgery gone wrong. It is not very esthetic to look at this guy ever again in a movie.

Theme: Male toxicity.. it's so 2018. Lol Warning: Spoilers
When I decided to watch this film I just looked at the actors and thought okay this can't be horrible. And maybe this film isn't horrible if you think of it in a satire/comedic sort of way.

It has all the regular ingredients for a recipe of male=evil. The first thing the men talk about while they are sitting around the campfire is toxic masculinity. Do guys really talk that way? No. I don't know a single friend who uses the words masculinity, especially while drinking and hanging out da homeboys.

From that point on everything was basically downhill/prescriptive, as you might suspect.

The director of this film must be from some distant galaxy. She has a lot to learn about basic human behavior and frankly, common sense. Guys just don't talk that way and when you use these buzz terms it makes people feel like you're back in 2018 pushing some kind of me-too message. Which by the way is so passe.

The bulk of this film is leading up to the women taking revenge on the unrealistic white male chauvinists cast. I thought it was kind of interesting that the male characters had to explain their background (a few of them worked at Wall Street?). It was just weird that the two guys who worked on Wall Street looked like characters out of Deliverance. I think the writer and director were trying to send a message that it's not just hillbilly males it's your everyday friendly neighborhood male that are toxic too.

The women of course are portrayed as ponds which I kind of feel like that in itself was quite disrespectful. At least give the first two women who were put out for the hunt a fighting chance. No they were as submissive and lamb-like as they could possibly make them I suppose to make the audience feel for them. Which brings me to character development. There is no character development. If you didn't know the actors you would be lost as to who is the person to root for and who is the person to just cringe on.

The script was absolutely awful. I really feel bad for the three actors in this film that had done some good work in the past. I'm referring to the girl from American Beauty, the guy from Starship Troopers, and Mickey Rourke. It's almost as if they were given the script, read the lines, but didn't even know what the film was about.

I guess if you want to take a trip back to 2018 and relive the me too movement, and hate on men, this film would be right up your alley. But if you want a more relaxing evening, like curl up next to your favorite toxic male companion and watch one of the pre 2010 films that will put a smile on your face and a few chuckles between the two of you, this would be my suggestion. Don't forget the popcorn!

Oops, I did it again-3
gugo_de_payne29 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Another evening, another time for a TV movie. This time I was laugh from a total hularious thing - "Hunt club", which is a third movie with same insanely funny plot: "Bad males do bad things with womens, because they are womens".

Imagine.

A bunch of girls comed in a distant manor to the unknown guys who offer them a money.

How did this story should be ended?

Nah.

Of course unknown guys should read to this girls a fairy tale, offer a cozy pijamas, warm milk and delicious cookies.

Thats how usually its happened.

But not anymore.

This guys was a terrible!

They put poor womens to the barn undressed (I dont know why they undress this girls, because its havent any logical sense), then release their victims away randomly just for a cluelly kill them.

To be honest, I dont know why they doesnt use a mens for that.

Story wasnt tell it to you.

But it tell that a mansion territory is closed and guarded by a guys with a guns.

Nobody know how, but some another "strong, one army" women comes in, passed through all guards outside of a place.

Ignoring all physical and logical laws, she and her girl friend then easily kill with bare hands guys, who twice or even triple bigger then heroines are, this rambos in a pants sneaking around and hiding very badly almost just behind bad guys shoulders, like in a cartoons or a Leslie Nielsen's comedy movies and, of course, forget to use their guns, for showing, how good and saint this girls are, how violence is disguist for their pure and innocent nature.

That was really funny.

Plot is... not weak.

Its pure absurd.

Mens can be hunted with same result, we dont get any motivation from a bad guys to hunt only a womens except a gender reason itself, the fact, that girls is a girls.

No any 1 good male character.

No any 1 bad or even doubtful, shady or moral neutral female character.

Other details if a picture you can easily add by yourself.

Girls fight back too easily, seriously. 1 "strong" girl and her UNEXPERIENCED in fightings girl friend fight back big and armored guys, A HUNTERS (it means they are VERY experienced with a weapon) like a knife goes through a warm butter.

Thats a very great comedy.

Violence isnt too much for making you compassion to victimized girls.

Yes, some girls was killed.

But without any reason. Besides, others just sit half naked in a barn. Thats all.

Nobody do anything bad to this barnsitter girls.

Girls doesnt looked like they was even beated.

Clean and fresh clothes, no any injures, no blood, nothing. Always so much light around thems, like I look on an angels.

Thats why I dont believe when they brutally kill main bad guy for his sadistic activity.

He do nothing to that girls personally. So, why they so hate him, except a wish of a scenario making female?

2/3 of film is a lame cheep chat about nothing.

Hello!

Guys, its a horror!

Do something!

If I want talks, I will watch "Santa-Barbara".

Main actress doesnt look tough.

Thats a problem, if you do something about revenge building on violence.

You just dont believe in her anger, when she squeeze her teeth and pop her eyes out like she is overfulled with a justified rage.

For example, in "Greta", you do believe that such a cute girl like Moretz strike back, because her heroine goes through a hell.

Here, wasnt any hell.

Girls was sitting in a barn. Main heroine was crying, running, killing maniacs, like you can turn into a battle machine so easily. But her revenge wasnt founded on her personal suffering. They do nothing to her. So it looks lame and fake.

Its a very weak and lame movie, nothing more, then another try to make girls think that all males are bad and its very sad. By the way, check skin color if a main villains and victimized girls. Yes. Nobody wasnt judged for a racism.

Go get 'em (Sind of the father)
kosmasp26 February 2024
No pun intended - someone is on a mission, even if we may not know from the start, but I was expecting something like that. I reckon if you have seen enough movies, sometimes you can have a good guess ... and be right about it). That all said, the movie is I reckon quite decent - if you have low expectations. And if you are happy to see some of the actors.

Hunt club tries to capture the magic of quite a few other movies (be it Surviving the Game, Hard Target and many more) and make something good out of it. I would argue it does not really succeed entirely, but you may feel differently. Some of the actors are known as already stated, but if you don't like the script them being added, won't really help ... skip then instead of getting angry with the movie.

This was certainly something...
paul_haakonsen15 August 2023
Well, I can't claim that I was harboring much of any expectations to this 2022 movie titled "Hunt Club", as I sat down to watch it here in 2023. In fact, I had not even heard about the movie prior to stumbling upon it by random chance.

I opted to watch "Hunt Club" because it was a movie I hadn't already seen, but also because Casper Van Dien was on the cast list.

Writers David Lipper and John Saunders put together a fairly straightforward storyline and script here. However, "Hunt Club" failed bring anything new or innovative to the genre of people hunting people for sport. What you see in this movie has already been seen and done in other similar movies. But hey, at least that makes "Hunt Club" a somewhat familiar viewing, I suppose. The movie's narrative was generic and rather predictable. But it still made for an adequate enough viewing experience the one and only time you will watch it. Yeah, there isn't much contents to the script or storyline to support more than a single viewing.

The acting performances in "Hunt Club" were fair enough, and there were some familiar faces on the cast list, with the likes of Mena Suvari, Casper Van Dien, Mickey Rourke, Jason London and Jeremy London. Personally, I don't understand why Mickey Rourke gets casted for movies, as he is stripped for acting talent and his mere appearance sort of introduces a Frankenstein element into the narrative. It was, however, fun to see the London twins in roles such as they portrayed in "Hunt Club", just a shame they didn't have more time on the screen.

"Hunt Club" is not a movie that I will ever return to watch a second time, nor is it a movie that I will actively recommend people to go out and get to watch.

My rating of director Elizabeth Blake-Thomas's 2022 movie "Hunt Club" lands on a generous four out of ten stars.

We've seen it all before
Maxwelljason1925 August 2023
This movie premise adds nothing new to the hunting humans genre, but it's certainly watchable and not as ppl are saying. That being said I would highly recommend The Hunt because it's 10x better. I even liked The Furies more even though it's has incredibly low budget. Surviving The game and Ready or Not is fantastic. So take it or leave it, 🤷 you've already seen it 😂 and you've seen it much much more well done 🤦The acting is fine and there are some good kills. The opening scene grabs you right away, and the pacing is well done.... Mina Sevaris girlfriend is the star of this one and the Men are are good villains. If you have seen all the better versions of this too many times I'd say give it a go.

He-Man Woman Haters Club
nogodnomasters16 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is a formula film we have seen multiple times and know what is going to happen every step of the way. Sorry if toss in some "spoilers" (if possible) and I apologize for the higher than normal star rating because I enjoy formula films. Cassandra (Mena Suvari) is introduced first and is top billed meaning she will be "the Final Girl." She is jumped by three guys out of a bar who are then jumped by Tessa (Maya Stojan). After that they become an item and the names the girls have all hail from appropriate Greek mythology references which Cassandra claims to teach. She gets herself invited to the Hunt Club where she finds out she is going to be hunted.

The only issue I had was when Cassandra was with the girls being hunted and acts shocked when she discovers what is going to happen when (plot spoiler) she knew all along which is why she is there. The film overdid the "Alpha Male, Apex Predator" stuff on purpose to make it look silly. Carter (Casper Van Dien) runs the hunt and is there to "fix" his son Jackson (Will Peltz) and turn him into an Alpha Male. The girls are all hunted in bra and panties except Cassandra who gets to keep her pants. Nice to see Mena still working and getting her way at her age. Mickey Rourke is in the film too as a bad guy.

Guide: F-word. No nudity. Off screen Rape.
