The days of the old CW network are over. Last season, Nexstar took over running the smallest broadcast network and most of the network's remaining original scripted series came to a close. Nexstar is choosing to focus on airing inexpensive acquired programming and unscripted shows in order to make the network profitable. The CW shows depend on ratings more than ever before and have to earn their keep to stay on the air. How many shows will be cancelled or renewed during the 2023-24 season? Stay tuned.

Canada’s eOne division is rejigging following the Lionsgate buy, with Orphan Black EP Kerry Appleyard set to replace Tecca Crosby at the creative helm.
From April, Appleyard will take on the SVP Scripted and Unscripted role that Crosby has held for the past 12 years and will direct both genre teams creatively. Shows like “Yellowjackets,” “The Rookie,” and “Naked & Afraid” all have a new home. Lionsgate has officially closed its acquisition of film and TV studio Entertainment One (eOne) from Hasbro for a sum of $375 million in cash, Lionsgate announced on December 27.
That’ll help Lionsgate beef up its own film and TV library, as the studio now has ownership of eOne’s crop of over 6,500 films and shows. Lionsgate already has one of the most impressive standalone film and TV libraries around town — one that has made it attractive for an acquisition of its own — and this deal makes it now well in excess of 20,000 titles.
On the film side, you’ve got a couple of Best Picture winners like “Green Book” and “Spotlight,” as well as some awards darlings and hits like “1917,” “The Woman King,” “The Post,” “Molly’s Game,” “The Bfg,” “The Duke,” “Arrival,” “Booksmart,” “If Beale Street Could Talk,...

We finally got an Antonio and Zane centric episode. I've been begging to know more about them since the series began.
Learning more about Antonio and the cafe's history helped to understand his dynamic with Zane, Victoria, and Darby.
Antonio seemed so well-liked, but someone was out to ruin his reputation on The Spencer Sisters Season 1 Episode 4.
Everything is viral these days, so the "Jeckell and Hyde" video reached thousands of people, even though it wasn't Antonio. He never yelled and threatened his employees like that.
This could kill me. We’ve only been in business for eight months. How could anyone even think this?

Antonio was terrified since his cafe was so new, especially since a reviewer from Alder Bluffs was due any day. This could damage his career.

The Spencer Sisters Season 1 Episode 3 explored the difficulties of three friends creating a healthcare app and the secrets they kept, leading to their servers being vulnerable.
Family, friends, or roommates working together is tricky, and "The Coder's Calamity" quickly demonstrated that since both Lee and Clark liked Esme, the roommates had different goals about launching their healthcare app.
Everything fell apart when their server was stolen, and their backup server was hidden in the pool.
Clark: Can you help us get our stolen server back?
Victoria: Of course. Any friends of Alistair’s are friends of ours.
Permalink: Of course. Any friends of Alistair’s are friends of ours. Added: October 17, 2023
Health apps have become the rage, and Triage sounded promising if it could detect issues ahead of time.

Hopefully, The Spencer Sisters has found its rhythm because The Spencer Sisters Season 1 Episode 2 felt like it was the second part of a pilot episode.
The series still laid the groundwork for Victoria and Darby's relationship; all cases have been their friends.
Darby emphasized with some of the suspects in "The Executive's Elegy," since Marlina was a workaholic, and their relationship mirrored hers and Victoria's, showing that she and her mom still had more work to do.
The case of the week hit a little close to home when Victoria's friend Marlina found her fiance, Danny, dead in the pool.
Marlina felt no one understood her, so Danny's sudden death crushed her. As usual, Victoria made everything about her, from talking about her late husband to offering her and Darby's assistance.

This Canadian series aired on CTV earlier this year and has yet to be cancelled or renewed for a second season. If The Spencer Sisters is renewed, there is no guarantee that The CW will pick it up. Earlier this year, the smallest broadcast network dropped several acquired shows midway through their runs when they drew low ratings. Does The Spencer Sisters have a future? Stay tuned.
A lighthearted procedural drama series, The Spencer Sisters TV show stars Lea Thompson, Stacey Farber, Thomas Olajide, Edward Ruttle, Husein Madhavji, Ayesha Mansur Gonsalves, Rodrigo Massa, Kaitlyn Leeb and Adam Hurtig. It was a relatively busy night for the broadcast networks, featuring several premieres.
We'll start with Magnum P.I.
The canceled drama returned with 3.5 million viewers and a 0.3 rating.
The series is up a bit in the demo and total viewers vs. its April midseason finale, and with word-of-mouth strong, there's a good chance the series can grow from here.
What a difference a decent timeslot makes, am I right?
Quantum Leap Season 2 kicked off earlier in the night at 2.9 million viewers and a 0.3 rating in the demo.
The time-traveling drama reached its best total viewer tally since its series premiere in September 2022.
Related: Magnum P.I. Was Destined for Success on NBC, so Why Did NBC Fail It?
The demo tally is on par with its freshman average, so maybe this move to the earlier timeslot could secure the show's future.

Lea Thompson and Stacey Farber shined in the new mystery series, The Spencer Sisters. The series combined light-hearted crime drama with family angst well.
The Spencer Sisters Season 1 Episode 1 introduced both Darby and Victoria Spencer and hinted at why they had been estranged.
As an introductory chapter, the series did a decent job previewing the issues our leading ladies may have and what motivated them to go into the private investigation business together.
The Spencer Sisters was similar to many of Canada's other breezy procedurals, where private investigators solve crimes, typically bloodless ones, with plenty of humor sprinkled in. It reminded me of Private Eyes, which made sense since Alan McCullough created and produced both series.
The CW was fortunate to pick this series up since programming was lacking this fall during the strike. It fits right in with their programming, and both actresses have a massive fanbase.
There is much to discuss,...

The early aughts are back again — and nowhere is that more clear than in The CW's fall lineup. As part of Nexstar's new strategy, the network is moving away from homegrown originals and filling its schedule with unscripted fare, including axed Max series FBoy Island, and licensed titles like German thriller The Swarm. While these cost-cutting measures come as a direct response to current headwinds in the industry, two of The CW's biggest shows of the fall, Canadian imports Sullivan's Crossing and The Spencer Sisters, are remnants of a bygone era. Specifically, they feel like obvious attempts to capture an audience nostalgic for the small-town charm and interpersonal dynamics of wildly popular Upn (turned CW) hit Gilmore Girls.

The CW has given a green light to “Crime Nation,” the network’s first true crime series. The 10-episode justice anthology, set to launch in early 2024, delves into real-life mysteries, cold cases and tense investigations.

The CW systematically stripped away its superhero dramas and teen-centric soaps during the 2022-23 television season, taking the foundation of its primetime programming slate down to the studs. Now comes the reveal of a renovation that leans heavily on niche sports, noisy unscripted series, procedural dramas and broad-skewing comedies.
The change comes a year after Texas-based Nexstar Media Group acquired a majority stake in The CW from its founders, CBS and Warner Bros. (the “C” and “W” in “CW”). A new owner inevitably brings new priorities and a new regime, and The CW’s freshly appointed leadership team of president Dennis Miller and entertainment president Brad Schwartz have a nail-biter of a season ahead. As Hollywood chiefs lumber their way through labor negotiations, the broadcast networks under their purview face an increasingly tight deadline to get production of their scripted programming up and running in time to air in early 2024. Given the rocky restart of contract talks between the AMPTP and WGA, hope for timely resolution is quickly dwindling.
Insiders who spoke to TheWrap offered a variety of scenarios on how quickly filming could pick back up — all depending on just how long it takes for any resolution to Hollywood’s historic double strike to emerge. Many pointed to September as a crucial deadline for deals with the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA to get done so new and returning scripted shows can produce even truncated seasons that could premiere early next year.

The CW Network president Dennis Miller is extending his contract through 2027.
Miller joined the network as president in October after it was acquired by Nexstar Media Group. Since then, he and his team have reshaped The CW’s programming strategy by adding live sporting events such as Acc college football and basketball, the NASCAR Xfinity Racing Series and Liv Golf, and a primetime line-up including shows like “Spencer Sisters,” “Sullivan’s Crossing,” and “Inside the NFL.”
“Dennis has done an outstanding job since taking leadership of The CW. Dennis Miller has extended his contract as president of the CW Network through 2027.
Miller joined the network as president in October 2022, following its acquisition by Nexstar Media Group from Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery. A month later, Brad Schwartz was brought on as president of entertainment at the network.
Over the past year, Miller and Schwartz had worked together to unveil the shape of the Nexstar-run CW, with its first fall slate coming amid the ongoing writers and actors strikes in Hollywood. A schedule was built around imported series such as “The Spencer Sisters” and “Sullivan’s Crossing,” as well as reality content including “FBoy Island” (revived after cancellation at Max), and a wide world of sports: Acc college football and basketball, the NASCAR Xfinity Racing Series, Liv Golf and the show “Inside the NFL.”
Nexstar says that by 2025, the CW will air more than 400 hours of sports programming over 48 weekends.

Brad Schwartz, who joined The CW as its entertainment president six months ago, hasn’t won over many diehard fans of the network after he canceled nearly all of its beloved scripted shows as part of a push by its new ownership, station group Nexstar, to make it profitable by 2025.
But what Schwartz has done, in a relatively short time, has been to position The CW in a place where the network can age up its audience, reduce overhead and secure the key rights needed to make it profitable for the first time ever.
To be clear, The CW was never designed to make money as a network. It was launched as a joint venture between CBS Studios and Warner Bros. TV in a bid to generate revenue for both studios through selling its programs internationally and to streamers. And with shows like The Flash, Riverdale, Nancy Drew and Dynasty,...

The CW is getting prepared for the fall season.
The network on Wednesday unveiled its fall premiere dates, and there are some changes vs. the schedule the network revealed earlier this year.
All American, which was set to remain on Mondays in the fall, has been pushed to midseason.
The scheduling shift isn't surprising: The WGA strike is ongoing, and there's a good chance a SAG-AFTRA strike will go ahead later this evening.
Moving the show off the fall schedule is a good move because there's no telling when new episodes will be ready for air.
The decision means all four returning CW dramas have been delayed until midseason.
All American: Homecoming, Superman & Lois, and Walker recently landed pickups for the 2023-24 season.
Canceled AMC series 61st Street, which was set to join All American on the fall schedule, has also been delayed.
In their place, the network...
