The type of coupler connecting the cars of the Lincoln train was patented in 1873 by its inventor, former Confederate Major Eli Janney and so could not have been used in 1861. The E-type coupler seen on this train was not developed until the 1930s. Trains of the Civil War era were connected by link and pin couplers.
