Bob Dylan Phenomenon (2007)

** 1/2 (out of 4)

Well-meaning documentary running just under an hour and it tries to tell the entire history of Bob Dylan. Needless to say, going through Dylan's career is going to take a lot more than just an hour. The documentary uses various clips of Dylan throughout the years to tell his story and we also get interviews with broadcaster Malcolm Dome, author Mike Marquese, Uncut magazine writer Jon Wilde, Andrew Muir and critic Peter Doggett. Die-hard fans of Dylan really aren't going to learn or see anything they probably don't already know or own bootleg copies of but I think the documentary will appeal to those just getting into Dylan's music. There are many fan-made documentaries out there that go into great detail about every period of Dylan's career and this one doesn't do that but instead it just gives the basic information. This would be a good place to start and then build your knowledge in other places. The good thing is that this documentary does feature quite a bit of live concert footage taken throughout Dylan's career. We get clips from both EAT THE DOCUMENT and RENALDO AND CLARA but also stuff from Woodstock '94, Newport Folk Festival '64, HARD RAIN, the John Hammond Tribute and Saturday Night Live. Most of this footage is going to be in the collection of die-hards but people new should enjoy seeing it.
