Streaming only, but what a production!

This has got to be the best filmed version of this opera ever done -- Martone immerses you in the story and, via breaking the 4th wall repeatedly, immerses you in the production of the opera itself. Beautifully filmed in the set shops of the Teatre dell'opera di Roma, the cameras give us everything -- the young lovers, the jealousy, the humour, the pathos, the orchestra, the chorus -- there's even a long shot of the set-up for Act III showing the lighting and sound equipment and the snow blowers. And even knowing about all the artifice, the story still rings heart-breakingly true. Tetelman will be the next great tenor of this century, and Lombardi showed both control and a flair for the dramatic with her extremely well-presented Mimi. This is a very charming, intimate version of the opera, and well worth the extra effort to find it via the streaming service RAI.
