Ventana Sur’s esteemed Animation! and Blood Window forums are teaming to present a fresh competition strand, Fantasmática. Aimed at creating an industry-wide synergy between animation and genre cinema that centers short film projects in development, the initiative kicks off at this year’s Buenos Aires Ventana Sur market, held Nov. 27- Dec.1 in the bustling Puerto Madero district.
“The incorporation of Fantasmática constitutes an exciting step that allows us to complete a project we’ve been developing collaboratively for some time,” Animation! manager Silvina Cornillón told Variety.
“The union of two sections with a trajectory like Animation! and Blood Window creates a space where animation and fantasy genre film professionals can collaborate and share ideas. We trust that this interdisciplinary collaboration will give rise to new techniques and creative approaches, which will enrich the field of animation and fantasy genre cinema in addition to generating diversification of the content available in Ventana Sur.

Adult Swim‘s mini-series “Uzumaki,” based on the supernatural horror manga by legendary author Junji Ito, was announced way back in 2019, and, as of a year ago, delayed with no Eta. The series’ producers confirmed that the series is still in the works with an update at this year’s Anime Expo, Anime News Network reports.
At the Production I.G. x Wit Studio panel that took place over the weekend, Production I.G. USA President Maki Terashima-Furuta reassured fans that “Uzumaki” is still in the works, and “any news that it’s canceled should only be believed if it comes directly from her mouth.”
While that was the only mention of the adaptation at the panel, manga creator Junji Ito is a confirmed guest at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, which brings great potential for a more substantial update soon.

Junji Ito is undoubtedly a mastermind of the macabre. Merging his own monsters with Japanese folklore and tentacles of Lovecraftian inspiration, Ito’s graphic novels, such as Gyo and Uzumaki, have gripped horror fans worldwide with claws of fear. The things that creep in the darkest alleys of his imagination will easily take up residence in the back of your head rent-free—if they don’t devour your brains first.
Netflix’s Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre is the J-horror answer to Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, an anthology that is haunted by everything from restless spirits to undead entities that only appear human. Ito’s stories are just as unsettling in anime form as they are in manga. While they are all nightmare fuel, some of them might leave you with one eye open at night while others will have you sleeping with the light on for weeks.

Eighteen tales of terror from the master of horror manga, “Junji Ito Maniac” offers a variety of stories from the iconic creator including recognizable characters such as Tomie and Soichi. This is the second collection of his works put into a series, with 2018 ‘The Junji Ito Collection” taking a similar structure of presenting a broad range of stories in the mangaka’s repertoire.
The work of Junji Ito has made him one of the most recognizable names in manga, with his tales of metaphysical horror and cosmic absurdity striking a chord with readers across the world. Unsurprisingly, this has led to many efforts to adapt his work to other mediums, notably anime and live-action. While many of these endeavors have gained favor with the fandom, it is undeniable that these projects have to be removed from the source material. For example, despite the cult status of the live-action “Uzumaki...

Children gradually turn into ice cream, then consume one another. Head-shaped, giant balloons fill the sky and snare humans with nooses. People lost at sea are found “alive” inside a beached marine creature. The morbid imagination of Junji Ito has no limits, though the latest anime based on his ghastly oeuvre has its limitations as both a reflection of the author’s talent and as a series. Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre adapts various tales from the popular manga artist, and the results are awkward. The new Netflix show animates these stories, yes, but it hardly brings them to life.
The team behind the previous anime adaptation, Junji Ito Collection, has returned. That sounds like a red flag, and in most ways, Studio Deen’s flat and uninspired production values are back to haunt you in these new episodes. However, it wouldn’t be fair to say...

Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre is a series that, in principle, arrives with the force that it is clearly a series “for adults”: A family contemplates a burning body. If you are expecting the usual animated psychedelic series, you won´t find it here where the macabre smiles of its characters look our way before the psychedelic credits.
A twisted collection of sinister portrayals.
Whether it is up to Ito standards is another thing: lots of people have complained, with some reason, that the series settles for being a (fruitless) attempt to portray the cosmos of the artista. It wants to do so, but does not manage to describe it in all its complexity and with all the twistedness of the characters.
At any rate, let the fans be the judges, animation fans that will have a lot to say about it (we are sure); and manga fans,...

Horror mangaka Junji Ito is a master of the genre, there's no other way to put it. His utterly horrifying art style has ensnared as many fans as some of the best horror films, and his massive oeuvre of long-form work and short story collections have been devoured by those who love the macabre and sinister. His special narratives have been adapted many times over the years, and so far, none of them have really been quite right. "Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre," the new Netflix series that arrives on January 19, is unfortunately not going to be the series that fans can hang their hat on either. It's in no way a bad time, but definitely lacks several key elements that make Ito's work his — and without those things, it's hard to truly feel like I'm watching one of his stories.
