Easy to Watch!
jdoylewood12 January 2023
Very bingable and I finished the series in three days, which is really quick for me. Likeable characters and no huge issues to deal with made for a lighthearted easy escape. It was a nice change of pace to have an average episode run time of only 30-35 minutes too, and with just 12 episodes you can really get through it fast. Don't worry though, the story is complete and does not feel rushed at all!

The premise is fairly standard for K drama rom-coms in that two opposites attract, and both end up helping the other to become more rounded. I thought both leads were good and there were a few scenes that one or the other really knocked it out of the park.

No one grows up alone
alaningle730 September 2022
A city vet Han Ji-yul (Choo Young Woo) ends up working in the countryside at his grandfathers practice where he is initially annoyed by a local police officer Ahn Ja-yeong (Joy from Red Velvet) He believes she is nosy but she is annoyed as they met as young children which he cannot remember. Yes it is a story of big city boy finding meaning in the simple things in life which has been done so many times, some better and some worse. I do not think it deserves the criticism it receives as if you wanted to watch a light hearted drama with a well acted storyline and sweet cast this will hit the spot.

An average good work
j_xu29 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A young man raised in big city is somehow forced to work temporarily in the middle of nowhere . At first he found it hard to blend in and there is even a nosy Ms. Everywhere. But gradually he is used to the routing live and even turned the nosy rival into a true lover. Aha, what would it remind you of when the gender is reversed? There are something I really want to implement here. The pace of the whole drama is kind of too fast ,which well led you through the plot fast but also made it kind of pale . Additionally , there are just not enough clues not to mention fewer turning points . Okay, ley me split up here. The plot is so linear leaving less space for branches and exciting turning points that one can almost see through the upcoming contents (I am sorry that sound a little bit too much but I was really expecting more) . The following subpoint is , not all clues are developed thoroughly . For instance, the book from Jiyul , could there be more scenes around that book of secret friends ? Nonetheless , it is a soothing romance story ignoring some minor flaws.

Short and Fun, But Not Great (Small spoiler)
OldGuyUS12 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
My wife and I started this series a few months ago, and gave up during the second episode. It just seemed slow and the acting seemed a tad off. We recently decided to give it another try.

We found it to be pleasant and light, but not great.

The Good Stuff ============ When I first started it, I felt the acting was sub par. Now we finished it I think the acting is mostly fine. The FL (Joy) did a great job, actually, despite not having a ton of acting experience. She is also quite beautiful.

Like in every KDrama we have seen with kids in it, the kids are super cute and do an amazing job with their acting.

The story is nothing new, but it was fun. A pleasant diversion.

Spoiler The ending was happy.

End Spoiler

The Sub-Par Stuff =============

As I noted the acting was mostly fine, with Joy being the best. The ML's ( Choo Young-Woo) acting was usually pretty good, but there were some scenes that he just did not pull off well. They were a tad cringey, I think.

Kind of a ripoff of Hometown Cha Cha Cha, but not as good.

Lack of communication. This is a thing is so many Asian dramas. Here, half of the issues between the leads is because of a lack of communication. The ML is kinda an idiot - when he could explain something that just happened, that bothered the FL so much that she walks away, he just stands there. Duh. GO EXPLAIN! Nope, lets just let things fester! Gads.

Spoiler: The ending was happy, but kind of weak. It's just meh. You'll be like, "Oh, it's over." But you won't be missing the characters all that much.

Overall ====== So, overall a 7 for me. A pleasant diversion, with a wonderful FL, but nothing too special. Worth a watch, especially since it is pretty short.

Different Taste..
JazzCat647 September 2022
Yes, all but Hi Mama is good as recent reviewer mentions, but the series is cute so far and I wish people would give things a chance before giving it a rating that it really doesn't deserve. She/he doesn't like the actor or something so why rate something you don't want to watch in the first place. Oh, that's right, free speech. It's nothing like Hallmark movies because it's funny and most Korean dramas have strong character development unlike most American movies, hallmark or not. I read the webtoon and it's on target with the story so something like this you need to give 6-10 episodes because they are only 30 minutes long. BTW. Their chemistry is good considering they just met and i am looking forward to the upcoming episodes. If it goes downhill, I will drop the rating accordingly as rating shows should be.

Cute but needed more flavor, and should've been a lot fewer episodes.
joonchan6931 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Loved Joy, didn't realize she was a KPOP idol, but I thought she was cute, but she lacked the charisma to carry the series, After the sixth episode, it became a chore to watch despite her presence. My wife also commented on the love triangle and wondered why the other guy is more good looking than the lead man, and I told her he has to be better looking for the triangle to work.

I noticed when the show was dragging they had to bring in the neighborhood aunties for their gossip to add the salt to the show, what should have been a 4 to 5 episode arc dragged on too long!!! They seemed to run out of ideas but kept on to fulfill the episode numbers required.

We all know how it was going to end and after six episodes it's like "Please get on with it."

Once again it was a chore to watch, and Joy was cute and I love her but she lacked a little something to carry a drama, but at the same time she's a singer acting, not an actor actor. If this series was 4 to 6 episodes I would have given a higher rating.

What a Lovely Surprise
solomon11214 October 2022
It's so rare in this day and age to find a show that models emotionally healthy and mature behavior. Instead of the usual refusal to communicate openly and honestly, people keeping destructive secrets from each other, and people stabbing each other in the back, this show is about a caring community who works out their issues in an adult fashion. Even the kids have a high emotional IQ. It reflects on us as an audience if we neither recognize nor value this. I, for one, would sure love to see more of this kind of healthy programming. IMDB is forcing me to write more...so I'll add that the acting is excellent, the scenery is lovely and I'm really glad I found this series. I hope the writers do more.

Slice of Life - Worth watching (you will love it)
anv_here12 September 2022
Even though it had a rough starting, its getting better and better by episode. Its true that we can't see that sparkling chemistry between the leads yet, but i guess its ok if we look through the plot perspective. We can't expect 2 people to magically fall in love at first sight and see butterflies.

The backdrops are good, the scenes are quite relatable to actual life of common people. It showcases how a normal countryside life is. The natural flavour of common people like friendship, love and care for others, the way of celebrating simple things ,the way the batter with each other, jealousy, etc these human emotions are well conveyed through the story and the acting.

Han Ji-yul- The Vet from the City- well for someone who left the country side long back and came back after years, we cant expect everything will be unicorns and rainbows.

Choo Young-woo in the role of Ji-yul was able to fit into the character.

Park Soo-young as Ahn Ja-young is also really good. Lets say may be the role was meant to be hers.

Same goes for Baek Seong-cheol as Lee Sang-hyeon. The cute jealous boy look suits the actor well.

Swoon-worthy, cute rom-com.
dseemalhar28 September 2022
This rom-com reminds those good-old kdramas. It is based on webtoon.

I know, I know... Story isn't new or revolutionary and is predictable but this drama is cute, adorable, heartwarming, healing, swoon-worthy, stress buster, feel-good.

Cute, adorable lead cast n their characters, even supporting cast is good.

This drama has beautiful countryside cinematography, beautiful aesthetics n OSTs.

Direction is good.

Leads Choo Young-woo and Joy are rookies but gave beautiful performances. They share adorable chemistry which grows with every episode.

I'll definitely miss this series and will cherish Forever couple JAYUL for long time.

I had a great time watching this series.

Yes, it definitely resembles to Hometown cha cha cha in a good way.

How can anything so short seem so long
geewhiz4615 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is fairly unique inasmuch as there is no discernible story to the series. Young Vet is lured to the countryside by a trick of his grandfather who is the local vet in a small village. There is a policewoman there who befriended him as a child but he doesn't remember her. She seems to turn up everywhere he goes. There is a peach farmer who has also known her all her life and who has feelings for her which she doesn't return.

A late addition to the mix is the vet's ex who complicates his budding relationship with the policewoman.

I'd love to continue the story but unfortunately there wasn't one.

Just farming scenes and talking scenes and what the writer fondly believes are comedy scenes.

The ending is as weak as water.

I forgive the lead actors because I don't believe they had much experience - they are still learning their trade. But the writing leaves so much to be desired that it is unforgiveable.

Ppl r so quick to judge! WATCH IT! DEFINITELY Worth IT
Giselle17101 October 2022
Most ppl saying it gives hometown Cha Cha vibes. Yes I agree, but maybe it was definitely shot in similar places? I enjoyed watching that drama with renowned actors but this one is really worth watching bcz new faces and also if u r into watching eye soothing rom com. So annoying side stories. Didn't like the love triangle but still okay.

Da da Sol Sol la la Sol was also shot in similar shooting spot. Does that mean Netflix copied that too? Haha give urself a break and watch this drama! U won't regret like me! Joy might have went overboard with her acting. She definitely needs more acting lessons!

So many better and similar series out there hard to rate this very high
leahcubed29 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
My rating is 8.5/10. This is a 2022 South Korean romantic comedy drama with 12, 30-40 minute episodes.

First I provide a unique synopsis then review

Synopsis

When Han Ji-yul (ChooYoung-woo) is tricked by his grandfather to leave Seoul and come to a small community in the country, he thinks he will just keep his head down and run his grandfather's vet clinic quietly. Huidong village is not a place to bring your big city attitude though, the people are close and everybody not only knows everybody but they know everything about each other. Ahn Ja-young (Park Soo-young) grew up in the village and is the jack of all trades helper. She seems to have a hand in about everything and this brings the village beauty into close contact with the annoying city man on a frequent basis. At first this "nosy" behavior annoys Ji-yul who didn't want to be there in the first place. But it is not long before he too relies on Ja-young to navigate this confusing new social environment. Will the city guy find love in this very unexpected place? Can he win her love over the boy turned man she grew up with?

Review A nice romantic comedy with a very linear, predictable storyline, If you are looking for something shorter and not very complex, this would be a good choice. It is worth warching once but I may never watch it again. I would not turn the channel if it was on but also would not seek it out. My 30 year old daughter, who watched it with me, said she would rate it 10/10 and we usually agree so that shows how differently people feel about this one. She said she could not think of anything wrong with it. As you can tell, from my review below, I found quite a bit wrong with the series.

Spoilers* I felt like he was very unkind to her in the beginning for no good reason. He was bristly and aloof in general despite the towns people being relatively friendly. Then it flipped and there was a point where she was not very nice to him. Because of that it was harder for me to completely buy into their sudden deep love for each other. I think, had the series been longer, there would have been more time for them to have a slower build to romance which would have added credibility. For me just them knowing each other as kids was not enough reason for them to fall so quickly and completely as adults.

Ja-young expecting him to remember they were friends as kids and being so angry it took so long was unreasonable. He was obviously severely traumatized by his parent's death and a mature adult would have realized that. So the anger she had over that was uncalled for. The writers did a poor job of providing that back story. There was not enough information about that traumatic event to understand why he went mute and how he recovered. The person he was talking to on the phone brother? Uncle? Friend? It was difficult to determine that relationship. And it was an important one because you never got to see him being close to anyone else, including the grandfather. When Ja-young got in the car accident and Ji-yul is in a panic trying to get her out I thought there would be a series of flashbacks that would explain his trauma more but there wasn't. The car was neither on fire nor in the water so it was strange for him to find it that critical to get to her. It implied it was due to the past trauma but you had to make that connection mostly yourself.

I really did not like 2nd guy at all for her. He was mean to lead guy beyond what mere jealousy would have called for. He was pushy about his feelings. Not sweet and patient but it seemed like he took for granted and expected she should turn to him. He never effectively defended her when the others treated her poorly for being an orphan nor went out of his way to help her often. It just seemed territorial and not like he had true romantic feelings for her for a long time.

The whole situation with the ex girlfriend was so brief it felt rushed and not a valid insertion to the story so late in the game. Triangles are often used to reveal the character's feelings for the lead. In this case the ex shows up and he does not waver at all. And, at first, you wondered what horrible thing she had done. But then you find out she was just going abroad. That separation trope is done often enough those of us in the know expect that separation does not come between true love. But it did. And he just broke up with her. Yet we learn he was so deeply in love with her it took a long time for him to recover. He wondered if he could ever love again. But she shows up and he does not even waiver from this girl he newly loves. The ex had everything, they shared interests and were both veterinarians, lived in Seoul and had history. For him to so quickly choose main girl did not ring true. It would have been more credible if the ex had done something horrible or was not a very nice person or something. Or even if he discovered he never really loved her but mistook friendship for lovel. It nade his love for anyone seem shallow.

When he gave up his life in Seoul to take over the vet hospital in that small town it felt like he was sacrificing a lot to be with her. There was never a sense he grew to love working with large animals it just felt like he adapted. When they were dating and wanted privacy they went to Seoul. So it appeared, as a young couple, Seoul would have more to offer them. Thus the choice to live in the small town did not flow logically. I think the point was the town people started to feel like a big family which is something he never had, but they did not portray that well. It never showed him developing deep relationship with town members. So it just seemed he was giving up a lot and she wasn't.

Her being a police officer yet doing everything seemed weird. I have seen others about police in a small town and they still do police work. Here she would be, in the middle if a shift, helping to cover peaches. That would have made sense for maybe a town mayor or something but not for a police woman. And she came and went whenever it seemed. It did not make police in a small town look very good. And I do not think, based on a lot of other examples, it was an accurate portrayal.

#ChooYoungWoo #ParkSooYoung.

A must watch!
cierrascornerblog20 July 2023
How Adorable! I really enjoyed watching this! It was a all new cast for me and their chemistry was so cute!! I'll have to go see what else they star in. This is a lighthearted, funny romance with absolutely no angst or over the top drama, It was really rather refreshing. Sometimes it's nice to watch something without going through an emotional rollercoaster. This drama gives all the butterflies of a sweet first love. I couldn't get enough of the main couple, they were so awkward and then once they decided to confess their feeling all the akwardness melted away and they became something so beautiful. I definitely recommend this sweet little bit-sized romance, it will make you remember or give you butterflies!

I was ready to turn this off when it got to dumb but glad that I finished it.
kmhlbeavis18 June 2023
It's a story about a young man whose grandfather tricked him into working at his vet hospital for a couple of months while he was on vacation with his wife. He first runs into the female cop who is friendly and is always around even when you don't expect it. He was annoyed at first but then finds out that her parents passed away also and his feelings for her start to change. This drama is pretty good except for one thing that it repeats. It always has a character that wants the same person and is always Jelly. In this case there were 2 characters the mans ex girlfriend and the peach vendor. If not for that nonsense I would have rated it a 10. The ending is pretty complete and was happy as well. This is one of the nicer dramas to watch. The actress who goes by the name of Joy is really a Joy to watch. She has a beautiful smile and personality. I wonder if she's like that in real life. I would definitely recommend this drama.

There's 6252737263 other dramas just like this one
hanalisss3 October 2022
Nothing new to see here , what a shame, they just change the setting of the story and the profession and they literally reuse every single other thing in it.

Forced Love triangle, entangled past with childhood fated relationship, and rude male lead that sweetens up with time. It just gets too boring because you know what will happen with every single twist. Even the characters personalities feel a flashback of many other old kdramas.

I was looking forward to watch this but the quality isn't there and it doesn't even attract for you to keep watching, even though it's short and has only a few episodes it's almost unbearable.

If you want something exciting and thrilling, this is not it.

Short = fun. Peaceful in any way
ssstbob26 January 2024
8,5 / 10 . This is a mini series which is reflected in shorter 30 mins episodes but also thinner, less elaborate story. Still, keeping it simple can be fun too, especially if it doesn't drag on for too long. The chemistry between the main couple is nice and FL had a very nice girl next-door vibe, although in real life she is a k-pop star apparently :) theme song (missing) is quite catchy.

The series takes place almost entirely in the country side, it was refreshing to see lots of nice rural shots and mountains. It's also remarkable that there aren't any "bad" characters, even the people who'd rather see the main couple fail, because they have a crush themselves, are relatable and you feel for them, they don't exit with an ugly fight.

Given the format, this series deserves a better average rating than the current 7 / 10.

Tried but failed.
dockie-9410520 September 2022
I thought the premise might be fun but soon realized this series is trying to imitate the success of "Small Town Cha Cha Cha" without the engaging actors, dialogue and storylines. There hasn't been any funny scenarios of the big city vet in the country. Officer Ahn is fairly pathetic. The vet is a dud and the big storyline is they played together as kids and he forgot. The screaming and hair pulling of women from rival towns is annoying. Had to fast forward through those scenes. The love triangle could be more interesting. I am liking the child actors better than the leads. If you are bored, tune in.

Love triangle spoils it all
mec55714 September 2022
I don't watch many Korean dramas, but from time to time one captures my attention. I thought that this would be one of those. Whereas.most Korean shows take place in Seoul, this is set in the countryside, something that I wish they would do more of. That being said, this show is really only about one thing, the love triangle between the three characters. Police officer Ahn Ja-yeong, she is an officer, and she tends to look out for the town folk. Then you have veterinarian, Hans Ji-yul who arrives from Seoul to replace his grandfather while he goes on a vacation. Then you have a local farmer, who although not dating officer Ahn, is extremely jealous of Ji-yul, and the fact that officer Ahn seems drawn to him. Take away this and you have a show that gives one a glimpse of the countryside and farm life in Korea. Would have made for a fine viewing experience.

Can anyone tell me why the majority of these Korean shows feature love-triangles? I have a idea, but I would like to hear other views.

Just Might Be the Worst Korean Series I've Seen So Far--And THAT's Saying Something!
spasek28 September 2022
Someone decided to steal the plot from "Hometown Cha Cha Cha" and messed it up-badly! "Hometown Cha Cha Cha" is infinitely better than this plagiaristic story.

We have a veterinarian who is conned by his grandfather to come to his small town to take over the practice while he and his wife are off on vacation. That was a badly contrived reason, especially since it's under the false premise that something dire had happened to the grandfather, which draws Ji-Yul Han to the town. Of course, he's upset that he's been completely duped. Who wouldn't be? Especially feigning an emergency! I would have left the town right then and there! The writers should have come up with a much better reason to get Ji-Yul to come to the town. This was a weak element that simply felt ridiculous.

The first couple of episodes are decent, but then it's all downhill from there as the very uptight Ji-Yul is somewhat cold and aloof toward nearly everyone. Of course, nobody bothers to realize how he's been conned into the job. They simply expect him to "fall in" and do his job with a smile.

Next, we have Officer Ahn. A woman who has no police officer skills whatsoever. Someone took actress Joy-who smiles, bats her eyes, and gives her little, "Tee-hee!" sound like some blond, blue-eyed woman without a brain in her head. I guess this is the only expression that Joy knows how to use. She's a very weak actress who makes her role very unbelievable. And, of course, she has that "pouty" face down cold, like a thirteen-year-old when things don't go her way. Very professional for a police officer who is unable to even deal with a thief.

I'm not sure where they found actor Sung Chul Baek (Lee Sang Hyun) but he's terrible. He delivers his lines with such flatness that it sounds like he's standing in front of a school auditorium and reciting a poem. I think I groaned more than a dozen times during the first five episodes as I watched this talentless kid try to sound tough; try to sound concerned; try to profess his romantic feelings.

The love-triangle is cliched, overused, and tiresome. I've said it before in several reviews that "My Beloved Summer" is the best series about young love. This one may be one of the worst. Every single cliché was used within the only five episodes that I watched. I couldn't continue with the series. It was just not worth torturing myself. Especially when there are so many much better series out there. I'm just relieved that each episode was only about 38 minutes long-which felt entirely too long!

Hometown Cha Cha Cha was an absolute gem of a romantic series about a dentist who finds herself immersed in a small seaside town. This series is a poor imitation of that rich story, and without the cliches and silly romantic plots that you might find in a junior high school. The three characters in this series are just not very likable. I certainly wasn't invested enough to find out how three immature people-adults supposedly in their late 20s, but act like they're all about sixteen or seventeen-resolve their romantic issues. None of them are worthy of any consideration. Officer Ahn is a tease, which I very much dislike as she toys with one man's affections while pursuing another. She's easily the most immature of the three.

This is the first Korean series I've stopped watching in over five years of watching them. For me, it was that bad. The series needed much better writing, far better actors, and something more unique and original, rather than trying to copy another series; a series that was truly endearing. In the meantime, I'd highly recommend acting lessons for Joy and Sung Chul Baek, especially. Any series these two end up in, I'll automatically skip.

Dreadful
kim-279789 February 2023
I've been watching KDramas for 4 years now, and this has got to be one of the worst korean dramas I've seen.

It's the actor of the main character, the female police officer ....I couldn't warm up to her at all, I think she probably would have been better in a support role...working in the village, the female group, or as the veterinary assistant......the acting was dreadful....stiff, strange facial expressions.

I loved Hometown Cha Cha and Our Blues, so I was expecting something on those lines.

If they do decide to go ahead with a Season 2, then I really hope they do not cast the same actor.

Like a bad Hallmark movie, but a series
princessandthepeabody6 September 2022
I had high hopes for this series, as I have become a huge fan of K-dramas and K-series. Just watched the first episode, and was very disappointed. This must be the 'Hallmark Movie' acting style of Korea. The story is old rehashed tale. Characters do not have the draw or depth of many other Korean dramas, Kim Ji-Won does not draw you into any likability, and lacks any chemistry with main characters. Overall acting is mediocre, unfortunately. I can't help but wonder if Netflix rushed this out due to the popularity and ride the wave of these Korean dramas. Too bad this one was a wash out. There are many other great and better K-series to watch. If you do not require much thought or depth of characters in a series, the scenery is pretty. Check out other series such as: Hotel Del Luna, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Hi Mama, Bye!, and Never Give Up.

Good Enough
PennyReviews22 November 2022
Korean Web Drama " Once Upon A Small Town " is a rural romantic comedy.

The drama is predictable, yes, entertaining though. It has all the feel good vibes that one is searching in a short rom com drama, it has the right amount of drama and the even more perfect right amount of romance. The latter was cute, with few romantic scenes however, as the drama took its time to enstablish the relationship. The love triangle was okay, on the other hand, and offered some supsence with the main love story.

The performances, in addition, were all great by everyone in the cast, even the side characters.

So, overall, five out of ten.

Joyless Jingles
Park_Min20 April 2024
Police officer Joy taking us on a joyless ride around the village. The fake cozy and small-town vibes failed to capture a convincing portrayal of small-town life but rather padded it with cheap cookie cutter village NPCs with bubbly visuals. The attempts at romance felt superficial and unconvincing, the female lead was always coming off too strong on the new guy in the village despite having little to no sufficient time to develop a romance, but rather relying on her ever long lasting impression of each other when they were kids. The transition was off. The case is even worse with the male lead. Anyway, it was a forgettable and uninspiring zero calories short drama.
