The Real Story: True Grit (2012)
*** 1/2 (out of 4)
Fans of the series will find this to be another rewarding episode. Both versions of TRUE GRIT are put under the microscope as we learn how realistic things in the picture were. The most interesting aspects are when we learn about some of the real-life people that might have influenced the Rooster character. We learn about the likes of Col. Whitson, Bass Reeves and Heck Thomas. Another very interesting thing is learning about how hangings were actually performed and what type of set-up had to be done in order for the hanging to go off as planned. We also learn about some of the things that could go wrong. We also learn about the likes of "Hanging Judge" Parker and The Dalton Gang.
If you're a fan of the Old West then I'm sure you'll enjoy hearing these stories and what connections they might have on the two films. The John Wayne version is mentioned a couple times but the main focus is on the more current remake with Jeff Bridges. For the most part this episode is extremely entertaining with the best moments dealing with the true outlaws and hearing about their work.
