On Saturday, audiences in Berlin will see the world premiere of “Above the Dust,” a Chinese-made drama that plays somewhat incongruously in the Generation Kplus section, which screens films for or about children. Whether the film plays again, and where, is moot.
The film’s director Wang Xiaoshuai, a three-time winner of Silver Bear awards at the Berlinale, is taking a considerable personal risk going ahead with the screening in the absence of approval from the mainland Chinese authorities.
With a young teen boy as the protagonist, the film depicts a hardscrabble family in a village in northwest China in 2009. While their neighbors slowly migrate to the city, the boy’s parents dig up the arid land in search of family heirlooms. Communicating with the ghost of his grandfather, the boy learns about the 1950s reforms that transferred peasant-owned land to the government and about the disastrous Great Leap Forward.

The result is quite impressive to watch, since, frequently, the level of these titles is equal to the one of movies.
Without further ado, here are 20 Asian dramas in random order proving the fact in the most eloquent fashion.
1. Cigarette Girl by Kamila Andini
“Cigarette Girl” is not a typical story of two broken hearts crushed by unfortunate circumstances, a trope over-used in the soap opera format. It also has a bit of history to offer alongside a basic insight into the women's hardships in Indonesia not such long time ago. “Your duty is to clean the house and find yourself a husband...

Chinese cinema is a layered world waiting to be explored and discovered, particularly in its more “independent” sphere. The term “Chinese independent cinema” refers to a new wave movement in film that emerged in China during the late 1990s and early 2000s. During this time, an increasing number of independent filmmakers began creating films outside of the state-controlled film industry. Since then, directors have been venturing into themes and styles that deviate from mainstream narratives, with a primary focus on the experiences and struggles of ordinary people. Chinese independent cinema has made a significant impact both domestically and internationally by offering alternative perspectives and narratives that often delve into social, political, and cultural issues in contemporary China. This list aims to present five essential works of the Chinese independent film movement from the 1990s that you absolutely shouldn't miss.

As a romance blossoms, Union’s character begins to question what she really wants from the next phase of her life. As we creep towards summer, Netflix has a hot new list of fresh content, including the final season of “Never Have I Ever,” the sophomore season of ‘Human Resources” and the highly anticipated sixth season of “Black Mirror.”
Kicking off the start of the month on mega streamer are lots of family-friendly goodies like both “Nanny McPhee” and “Nanny McPhee Returns,” “Kicking and Screaming,” “Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius” and the “Angry Birds Movie.” But the adults won’t be left out of the conversation, as more mature flicks and series like “Jarhead,” “Funny People” and “We’re the Millers” are also hitting the platform this month.
And it wouldn’t be Netflix without its originals. “Take Care of Maya,” “Extraction 2” and the Sarah Snook-led “Run Rabit Run” will land on the site in June. And even if this isn’t enough to get you watching, Netflix will be streaming its Tudum festival on Saturday,...

After almost a month streaming on Netflix, Jennifer Lopez‘s action-thriller “The Mother” continues to reign over the global top 10 chart for the week of May 29. Read on for this week’s analysis.
This week “The Mother” was once again the #1 English movie across the globe with 16.5 million hours viewed, but it also entered Netflix’s all-time chart as the eighth most-watched English language film on the streamer with 229.3 million viewing hours. It was only the number-one movie in Jordan, of all places, but it remained in the top 10 for 89 countries total.
The rest of that top 10 was made up of movies from other studios that previously had theatrical releases with DreamWorks Animation’s “The Boss Baby” taking second place with 10.6 million hours viewed, followed by “Missing” with 8.1 million viewing hours, and even Mark Wahlberg‘s 2007 action movie “Shooter” placed in the top five with 7.5 million viewing hours.

It’s probably not getting an Oscar nominations anytime soon, but “The Mother” has bested Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” where it counts: Netflix viewership metrics. Jennifer Lopez’s thriller film has entered the streamer’s list of Top 10 most popular English-language films at No. 8, knocking Scorsese’s three-and-a-half hour mobster epic out of the upper echelon.
Netflix announced the news on Tuesday, along with the release of viewership numbers for the week of May 29 to June 4. “The Mother,” which has streamed for four weeks after premiering on Netflix May 12, has now been watched for a total of 229.30 million total hours by Netflix subscribers. That’s enough to place it between “Extraction” (231.340 million hours) and “Purple Hearts” (228.69 million hours) on the all-time list, and bump “The Irishman,” which peaked at 214.57 million hours viewed after its first 28 days on the streamer, from the list.

When I heard about The Days, I was super curious to see the inside happenings of Japan’s nuclear disaster of 2011. We all know about the disastrous earthquake, which was followed by a tsunami, but it was also followed by a nuclear disaster that could’ve contaminated half of Japan. Of course, to address the elephant in the room, The Days is unlike the edge-of-your-seat Chernobyl. Instead, it’s a slow-burn approach that brings in too many technicalities to make an emotional impact. It’s an 8-part mini-series that follows multiple characters that embody real-life people who contributed to managing the nuclear disaster over the few days following the 11th of March, hence the fitting title. Although the subject matter is quite harrowing, the execution of the show is boring at times.

Netflix gained a new competitor last month (sort of) when HBO Max and Discovery+ combined forces to create the confusingly-named Max. With its list of new releases for June 2023, however, Netflix doesn’t have too much to worry about.
This month is filled with some major Netflix original titles, not the least of which is The Witcher season 3 volume 1 on June 29. Though star Henry Cavill is set to leave the Polish folklore/video game adaptation in season 4, he remains very much entrenched as the titular Witcher in this next go-around. Other big TV hits include Manifest season 4 part 2 (June 2), Big Mouth spinoff Human Resources season 2 (June 9), and animated King Kong series Skull Island (June 22). That’s not even to mention the return of Black Mirror season 6. That still has yet to receive a release date but we have no doubt it will be properly epic once it arrives.
