King Edward III is in mourning after his beloved daughter died from the pest en route to marry a Castilian prince. His banished mother is barely allowed to come mourn the princess, but as her doctors believe tumors will kill her in months, is granted rehabilitation. Godwin is found among his fellow pest-killed refugee brothers' corpses and the priory's buried gold treasure, brought back and nursed, but Caris and Thomas keep administrating the priory. As the pest has killed too many workers, they want to offer peasants better terms to come work priory land. Thomas even digs up the royal seal to grant a charter, disclosing he's the escaped, presumed-dead king Edward II. Sir Ralph resorts to bloody punishment against illegally deserting serfs, but Holger's archery helps a revolt chase his henchmen. Petronilla rejoices that earl Roland dies from the pest she brought to the castle, but Ralph refuses to believe she's his mother and had him adopted by previous earl Gerald although sired by Roland.
