In 1895, the son of a runaway slave, fought racial inequality and became the first Black athlete in the state of Iowa to go to college. He ran track, and helped the Hawkeye football team win their first conference title.
Hayden Fry gave Jerry LeVias, the first Black player in Southwest conference history a football scholarship. The two faced adversity and racism, but together, they helped reshape the landscape of college football history in the south.
